Default Dick Blick Studio Markers

I just got my order of Dick Blick Studio Markers. These are supposed to be comparable to Prismacolor markers, which I have never used.

I have a few Copics - Love them but $$.
I have a lot of Shinhan Touch markers - Love them and more affordable but can be hard to find.
I have some very old Design markers which are no longer made and smell horrible. But after 13+ years most are still going strong after I unearthed them.

I was on DickBlick.com looking at papers for markers and checked out their Blick Brand Studio markers. They are something like $1.59 when 12 or more are purchased. I needed some more grays and reds and can't justify to my husband the costs for Copics/Touch, so I decided to try the Dick Blick brand. My husband is a graphic artist and totally understands quality products..but he also can make amazing art out of kids finger paints, so he tends to make his own mediums and uses things I would never think of (even food coloring).

Sooo...They are alcohol based ink, like all my markers. They feel cheaply made. But the proof is in how they work. The ink seems to blend well with Copic, Touch and my old Design markers. They do smell, not near as bad as my Design markers but definetly more than Touch and Copic.

They are very juicy also.

The ink doesn't always match the color on the barrel though. That is a bummer. But the weirdest thing is the pink I bought. It is just a straight pink. However, when using it, the ink is DAYGLOW pink - NOT what I needed. I walked away for about 5 minutes and by that time the ink had dried and it was the color on the barrel. Very weird.

I'm not sure how I'm going to be able to work with this pink for blending and coloring because of how it is florescent for the 1st 5 minutes.

I think these will be OK and if I didn't have any other options I would be really happy with them..but they are not Copic's or Touch markers and won't be my "go to" markers.

Thank you for that.

I too am loving the Copic's (I have about a dozen)..but just can't jusitfy the cost right now. I'm always looking around for what would be a close 'second'.

I'm always curious about different brands and usually end up with a smattering before I settle on one. Thanks for the review!

If you like Shinhan Touch, Jerry's Artarama is closing them out at what looks like a very low price. Single markers are $1.89 and sets go from $20 for a 12 marker set to $99 for a 60 marker set. Looks like everything is in stock right now.

Dick Blick is also selling Shinhan for $2.37 each. No prices on sets. These are also listed as clearance prices.

Makaren- THANK YOU for the information about Shinhan coloring pens at Jerry's Artarama. I went to the site and saw the 60 pen set for $99 with free shipping and $10 off the order today only. Just bought myself a Christmas present ! I have very few Copics, and some Prismacolors that I love but never have the colors I need to blend and color the way I would like. I am hopeful that these will be the answer for a lot less !

Wow, thank you for the information!! I just ordered some colors I didn't have! Can't beat these prices! I'm sure they are clearing out old stock in anticipation for the new line coming out early spring which will have replaceable nibs and be refillable. But these will work for me for right now

I wasn't able to get free shipping because I'm in Alaska but I did get $5 off so it lowered the shipping down to just under $10, which is typical for Alaska shipping.

Yay! More pretty colors!

Hi Grannyi, I use these with my Copics and they work just great blending together. I don't have any prismacolor markers but I do have a generic brand marker from Dick blick, which are supposed to be simular to prismas. they also work just find with both my Copics and Touch markers.

I am so grateful to everyone who shares their experiences with various tools and techniques ! I learn so much from the rest of you. Unfortunately I spend far too much money on all this stuff but it has become my passion and makes life exciting. Thank you, everyone !

Wow! I had never really heard of Shinhan markers. I did a little research just to see what they were and posted the price since there seemed to be people who were interested. Glad to server as your enabler this week.

Got them already!! That is so great!! I'm in Alaska so it takes longer to get here plus I order individual markers - someone has to collect each one rather than grab a box

I got a notice it was shipped but it's in NC, I don't expect it here until next week

I have a friend (Penny Duncan) who makes wonderful art with the blick studio markers. There is probably a learning curve just like with anything and it is hard to find a good pink. I like Copics "Sugared Almond" for nice nutral soft pink. Everything else looks like pepto bismal LOL! That is one of the colors I will buy a reinker for!

Anyone know where I can get the best price on copic refil ink?

Smile alcohol markers

Good morning from wet Bali.
Have you used the letraset tria system pantone markers?
They seem to be excellent and a lot cheaper
Have a merry christmas and happy healthy new year.

Oozak.com - register/create an account and then when you are logged in the refills cost $4.90 they have RV02 in stock.

refills are listed as $5.62 at Carpediem

LOVE MY DICK BLICKS! I bought a huge set over a year ago, and they are still going strong. I have never had one of them go neon on me. The markers that are not true to the cap color are my Sharpies - they are always wayyyyy darker then what they should be.

But I'm sold on the Blicks. I will say though that I use my Prisma pencils more than my markers. I can blend and blend and blend to my hearts content.

Carpe Diem Store - Art,Architecture,Hobby Supply

Promarkers (alcohol based) 148 colors $1.49 each. Had I known about these when I was buying Copics I could have saved alot of money. I've read good things about them.

Does anyone know if Promarkers and Prisma's have that strong oder some markers have? My Blick markers have a smell but not overpowering but my Design markers smell the worst by far. No oder with Shinhan Touch or Copic.

all of my marker brands play well together - which is really nice

I have used Letraset Trias since the 1990's and LOVE them. They seem to last a long time too. I used to pay about $5 each but Carpe Diem has them cheap.
