I have tons of these - can't resist them. Mostly I reach for Dotted Swiss (or the Sizzix/Stampin Up! one that's almost identical) or a Sizzix one called Three Dots; D'vine Swirl gets used a lot, too. For cards for manly men, I like Diamond Plate (used with silver metallic cardstock, it looks like the real thing). I think the most versatile ones are the more geometric or abstract patterns as opposed to the ones that are a whole scene on their own, but I've seen some awesome cards done with both.
Also, don't limit yourself to just the Cuttlebug brand. Sizzix makes some really nice ones (including their Tim Holtz line), as well as QuicKutz and a company called Craft Concepts (cropstop.com carries lots of these).
Oh my..pick one I use the most...impossible. I know I have over 100 folders and I love going thru them and using a different one all the time. They are such a great investment.
blessings,
I'll jump on the bandwagon for Swiss Dots and D'Vine Swirl, too. I use them both a lot.
I think masculine cards are a little tricky to do, and I've used D'Vine Swirls with a dark cardstock like forest green, maroon or navy for a great looking guy card that's not too fussy.

Thanks everybody! I tend to switch gears pretty fast, so I would hate to buy plates that only reflect one mood. KWIM??
I have been looking at the dots and the swirls. I have not run across the argyle though.... OMG, I LOVE argyle. My fav socks are grey and pink argyle. *squee*
thanks for the heads up on the info about other brands fitting the Cuttlebug!
I just love my folders! I have a whole binder full! To pick a favorite would be difficult. I have some SU folders and they make amazing CAS cards. The rose and the swirl one are wonderful all on their own. The swirly one I used to make an anniversary card with cream colored CS. I added a bow and some pearls and it was stunning. The recipient said that she had it on display for months afterward. I use a folder on almost every card. They add an amazing touch to any creation.
I never met an embossing folder I didn't like. Michaels has them for 40% off this week so I have been picking up the ones I don't already have. You may also want to check out Oh My Crafts - Delivering Possibilities They always have some on clearance. About a month ago I got a 2-pack of Disney ones for .97 cents for the two pack. AWESOME!!!
Cuttlebug Textile, Stampin Up Square Lattice and Manhattan Flowers (not sure why I bought all those others...)
Oh, my goodness, I can't believe i forgot the SU! Square Lattice!! Since I got that one, I use it all the time - it's great for adding texture that doesn't overwhelm the rest of the card.
There is no way for me to choose a favorite! I just now bought PC CB Diamond Plate and already am loving it for guy cards (I struggle with guy cards!). I love swiss dots, textile texture, Jamara, three-dots, Couture Creations Diamond Trellis, Couture Creations Pinstripe, Sizzix Damask....the list goes on and on. I am using CB Kassi's Brocade for my Easter cards and I LOVE IT! I have tons of embossing folders and I can honestly say I use 90% of them over and over and over...it's rare for me to make a card without dry embossing on it!
I use Swiss dots alot - it seems like such a timeless folder which you can use for most occasions. I also use my Textile one heaps. For Christmas cards, I use the Snowflakes, Holly with Berries and the 2 different Snowflakes folders from the CB Winter Wonderland set (comes as a set of 6).
As I make a lot of masculine cards, I use the CB Happy Birthday, Argyle, Distressed stripes, Spots & Dots, Sizzix Textured Impressions Happy Birthday set (the large folder - not the small ones) and Crafts Too Stars (great for boy's cards).
For feminine cards, I use my Crafts Concepts Budding Vine, Sizzix Textured Impressions dots and flowers (set of 2) and the Sizzix Hello Kitty Spring set #2 (comes as a set of 4 but I use the one that has the flowers border with the perfect amount of room in the centre to stamp an image - great for one layer cards).
For sympathy cards, I mostly use the Crafts Too Leafy Tree ef - it's simply gorgeous!!
Honestly, there are so many brands out there now which fit in the CB - some ef's seem to be very similar no matter which brand - but there are some that are just so gorgeous and unique. Funny thought how I often tend to go back to my original ones like Swiss dots.
i think the 2 i use the most are textile and swiss dots. but i like to use diamonds in the rough for men's cards - and like to add mica powders to the raised areas.
I love embossing folders!! Have over 20 of them, but usually use the same ones over and over. My favorites are Swiss Dots and Birds & Swirls from Cuttlebug, and Elegant Bouquet and Framed Tulips from Stampin' Up. I also like the border folders that cuttlebug has. I just started my collection of those!!
I love to do vintage cards and the one that looks like words makes a very nice card. Swiss dots is another winner as so many have stated. It adds so much to the background of the cards when you use a folder.
I, too, love my folders BUT unlike many of you, I only use three of them regularly. Swiss Dots, D'Vine Swirls and my FAV SU Square lattice. That lattice folder gives such a deep impression that it makes your paper feel like fabric - I totally love it!
Swiss dots here too! Though I do like the Christmas Tree ones for that season. I like the look of those which have a frame or space for stamping but haven't got any myself yet.
I wore out my swiss dots. It broke on the fold so I had to tape it with packing tape. I am now forcing myself to use other folders and GASP, none at all! LOL

Oh Kathleen, that sounds interesting. What kind/brand of mica powder do you use. I have that folder and want to try that. Do you have a picture of a card you used it on? Thanks. :p
I like the SU! folders made by Sizzix much better than the early Cuttlebug ones I bought because they're a bit bigger and I can emboss a whole card front! My favorites are Square Lattice, Vintage Wallpaper, and the new Framed Tulips, with Perfect Polka Dots and Finial Press being the runners-up. The Vintage Wallpaper folder has a bonus: it's back flap is cut differently and you can emboss long pieces of paper without getting a crease.
I use the Swiss Dots and the Diamond Plate the most. Oh My Crafts usually has good deals on the folders. Last year at a garage sale I got 20 folders for $5.00. I asked the woman if she was sure on the price. She said yes and I took them right away. I wasn't going to pass up that deal.

absolutely no way could I pick just a couple!! LOL! I use CB, Sizzix, TH, fiskar plates, SU... whatever. I select the folder to compliment the image and feel of the card. Eg: I have some "teen" girls with shopping bags that I tend to use the paisley folder for cause they're slightly retro 60's...

I wish the Cuttlebug folders were a bit larger, too. I wonder if they could redesign them? Why would they not make the pattern large enough to emboss the complete front of a card?
My favorite folders are Swiss Dots and Diamond Plate. I recently bought the Lattice one but I haven't used it yet.

I love the Sissix Dots because you can do the whole front of A2 card. Divine Swirl and Houndstooth are my favorite too. Has anybody tried the new Darice folders? They were on sale 2/$5 but I didn't get a chance to grab any.

I agree with Beth - I like the Sizzix-made folders best for their slightly larger size. My most-used of late is the Stampin Up Square Lattice folder. I also used SU Flurries a lot around Christmas.

I love the Textile Texture for almost any card, and Diamonds in the Rough from Cuttlebug. Then there's Square Lattice from SU, and Daisy & Swirl from Crafts Too.
Since I've started using the Cuttlebug for embossing, I've discovered (sadly) that I don't use my background stamps much anymore....
wow, thanks for the replies. When I wrote this post I only had the first folder, so I didn't know what you guys were talking about... my aha moment came a few days later in the mail. *grumble* what the heck? why are they smaller??!
I will look at the sizzix ones. a bit bummed though. Amazon doesn't have buy 3 get the 4th free with the Sizzix. I may have to check out Overstock. OR I may break down and buy a couple of the Stampin' Up ones. The textile one sounds like a good one to invest in.
I love each and every one of my embossing folders ( approximately 30) . Don't forget you can use them with your envelopes too- to match your card. People LOVE that nice little touch.
