OK...I have both and would recommend both, but 99% of the time I am using my silhouette instead of my cricut. I purchased the cricut way before I even knew what a silhouette was and now I use my silhouette all of the time. I really like the silhouette because I can cut ANY true type font that is on my computer whereas with the cricut I get one font for 60 bucks. I would steer you toward the silhouette because of the cost of the cartridges alone for the cricut. I know some people have had problems using the sil because of the learning curve involved but I found it very easy to use. I also like that I can basically cut any image I want and make it a paper piecing. HTH
My dh is a computer geek and when he found out that the Silhouette works with the PC he said order it. People talk about a learning curve but I found it very easy to use and I am not all that computer savvy (just ask my ds ).
I joined the Yahoo User group and there are tons of free images to downloads and if you want to buy images from Quikutz they are only $1.99 each and my machine came with a $25 download card.
There are two versions out. One is the old version that I have and the other is a newer version that has the capabilities to cut without a computer. You save images to an SD card with that one and it has a slot in it where you can just pop it in and cut, kinda like the cricut. I have mine out on my desk all the time not hooked up all the time but just sitting out because I don't have room for it anywhere else. Plus the convenience of being able to take the laptop to my room and hook it up and cut in a pinch is great. I bought mine less than a year ago from QVC and it cost way more than they are asking for it now. I hope you find a great deal.
I bought mine from Ohmycrafts.com. It was on sale for $99, and that came with a $25 download card from Quikutz. With shipping mine came to just under $130, although I have seen on here recently that they are offering free shipping, so you might get a better deal than I did. The service was great, it shipped within 2 days and I had it in less than a week.
Mine is the original, not the SD. You can use the SD without a PC but you are limited to the size you can cut. I just don't think that I would ever need to use it away from home (I don't attend crops and if I did, I'd just take a laptop) and for the price difference, it wasn't worth it to me.
Mine is hooked up all the time and sitting on my desk, on the other side of my monitor from my photo printer. HTH
just bought the Silhouette the other day. Love it so far. Downloading the upgrades for the software was a major pain in the ***** but i love it.. I just don't like that it can't cut papertrey ink paper.. bummer...

The downloading has been a pain since the upgrade came out. For the paper have you tried setting the machine to make multiple cuts of the same image. An easy way to do that is to copy and paste two or three of the same image on top of each other and the machine will cut in the same spot the two or three times. It may work. I generally do this for Bazzill just to get a clean cut. HTH
My husband told me today he order the silhouette for me.... I guess my next question would be, what is the website to use to download the designs....I guess the software comes with the machine?.....Any help from silhouette owners is appreciated!!!

The website that you use with the software comes through the software itself. If you want to play around with the software go to quickutz.com and download it from there you can see what kinds of designs are available. If you are wanting to purchase something else there is always paperthreads.com. I have purchased many from there and am very happy with them all.
i had the silhouette in my hot little hands, here at my house.
but was talked out of it. never had it out of the box.
do i need this?
i don't scrapbook at all

Is it possible to view & purchase the images available for download without owning a Silhouette? I have a Cricut and was trying to figure out if I could buy the images and then use Inkscape and SCAL to cut. I can't find where to view the images on the Silhouette website.
