Question 1 - My laptop crashed and I lost my Design Studio that was on there. You only get one download. When I got my new laptop it won't download. Support has said if I send my serial number, they will reset it. Where is that number supposed to be. I can't find it in the book, on the CD or anywhere in the box my software came in. If I knew where to find it, it might help me??

Question 2-If I can't get my studio software to work and need to replace, is the Gypsy really worth it? If I buy cartridges that are linked to a Gypsy can I use them in my design studio or not?

I purchased my Design Studio years ago and haven't had time to even learn how to use it, I will be so bummed if I can't get it to work because my laptop crashed but I like the additional options above and beyond the cricut expression alone...Used that twice in the past 6 years. I can't wait to graduate so I can "play" again.

Thanks for any help on my questions. I see so much about "linked" cartridges and I really don't understand the consequences for that.
You can use linked carts with your design studio. Once a cart has been linked to a gypsy you can not link it to another gypsy, it will still work in the machine as with DS tho.

I asked for a gypsy for christmas (they had a deal at cricutmachine.com where you got the gypsy and 7 carts for $89) and I linked all of my carts up. since I have 2 cricuts I lent my little one with all of my carts to my friend who can't afford one and I have my gypsy with all of my carts and my expression at home. I had to keep one cart in my machine so I could use SCAL and my computer fonts with my cricut.

The only downside to Gypsy is the small screen.

I got a new computer and cricut reset my serial # but I had saved it in an email because I bought it online. I bet the sereal number is printed on the CD or on the paperwork that came with your DS software.

Good luck!

Not sure if I am right but when you open the lid on the front of the cricut, the bit that drops down has a number on it, could that be the serial number?

I have had my Cricut Expressions 2 for about 4 months now and the only reason I bought it was kerning. I wanted to cut words without it cutting each letter. Just the outside of the word. Can this happen? If so how? I am also not getting the cutting depths and speeds. Too many options and I am not sure what to choose. I cut paper and vinyl. I have only used it once to cut days of the week in vinyl and it was an epic fail. I have the Cricut Expressions too but have not used it. Would it be easier to use it instead?

Hi!
I don't have the Expression 2, but I have had my expression for a long time.

Kerning and Welding are two different things.

Kerning is moving the shapes/letters around by small degrees.

Welding is merging the shapes/letters into one piece or cut.

I know that welding can be done with Design Studio and the Gypsy which have to be purchased.

Welding can be done with Cricut Craft Room (CCR) which is a free program.

Go to ARS Cricut Cutting Guide | Above Rubies Studio and download the cutting guide. I even have the app on my I phone. It really helps when using different types of papers. Also, making sure the blade is in correctly and sharp helps get good cuts.

I cut vinyl all the time. Read the package for the correct pressure and blade settings. There is one setting that will cut the image out like a sticker, the other setting lets you pull all the excess vinyl off the backing paper and just leave the cut image which you pick up with transfer paper and then stick to your wall or item.

If I understand, cutting around the word. That sounds like layering to me. You'd cut your word in say white, and then cut the shadow in black. The Shadow layer would be a bit larger than your word, then glue the white to the black and you're set.

I am sure I didn't explain well. Look on you-tube, there are tons of videos on vinyl, welding and such.

Hope I helped a little.

Hi! Just getting on board here but hoping someone else will see this post. I've had my Cricut Expression for 3 years now. I've heard a lot about the Silouette and everything it can do but I am persisting with my Cricut. I am trying to remain computer free as far as creating pages and cards and any papercrafting other than using the computer for ideas! My question is - does anyone know where I could purchase a Sure Cuts A Lot program for my Cricut? I know there was a huge law suit with Provocraft and this company but wondered if you were still able to purchase it somewhere on line. Ebay has none so I'd thought I put this question out for the scrappin' girls!

You would need to get Version 1 or 2. I have SCAL 2, and it still works great with my Expression. I think the only version you can buy now is SCAL 3, and that's the one that isn't compatible with the Cricut machines. Maybe you could try Craig's List. Just a note: You do need to use your computer with Sure Cuts a Lot.

Thanks! I will look for Version 1 or 2. I knew I could count on a scrappin' sister to answer me. I may break down and purchase it if I find it - I'll try and expand and open my mind....thanks again!

My pleasure. I hope you find one, because SCAL is one of the only reasons I haven't invested in a Silhouette. I have a lot of Cricut cartridges, plus I have SCAL. Good luck, and I'll keep my eyes open for you.

Hi all!
I need some help! I tried cutting out snowflakes on glitter paper and it didn't work. It only cut the top layer of the paper. The paper is not Stampin' Up! but some that I bought at Crafts Direct. I suppose I have to change the pressure but I don't know what to set it too. BTW I have an Expression I.
Any advice from you experienced women would help! Thanks!

If you have SCAL 2, you can upgrade *free* to SCAL 3 to use it with a different machine. Just did that this past week to use it with my Cameo. I can still use all of my SCAL files on my Cameo, as well as with my Cricut.

Roxanne,
I honestly don't know what pressure you need to use, try 5 or 6, make sure your blade depth is around 5 or 6, and speed is medium or a bit slower.

Some really thick paper needs to be cut with the multi cut setting, meaning that the blade runs around the image 2 or 3 times.

Glitter paper is inherently difficult to cut and often needs multi cut, and then the mat needs to be cleaned because glitter gets everywhere.

There a lady named Megan and her site is "Above Rubies Studio" do a web search and she has a free cutting guide about different papers, blade, pressure and speed settings. There is also a free App from I-Tunes that has her cuts. Just follow the links on her web page.

Good luck

Cynthia - Thanks for answering and for the advice. I will try what you said! I looked at the paper again this morning and compared it to SU's glitter paper and the SU stuff is a lot thinner.
Thanks again and have a good evening!

I realize this is a late response, however to add to ladybugstamper2......in a class I took for the Cricut machine, they suggested putting the glitter side upside down and cutting on the backside of your paper to save the blade and get a better cut. It sure worked in the class, so hope it helps you out, especially with the holidays coming up. Good luck!

Oh my gosh -- that's a great tip! Thank you -- I wouldn't have thought to do that but it makes sense!

You've probably seen this already, but here is a link to the Cricut FAQ thread here on Splitcoast: Cricut FAQ
