Default Copic price increase... again

I received an e-mail this morning from a store that sells Copics. It said that as of 1/1/2013 the price of Copics is going up to $8 per marker. I am done buying Copics as of the same date. I will purchase refills, but as much as I love these markers, they should be gold plated at that price!

What a shame! I love my copics, but $8 per marker? That is not good.

That's what the refills are for - so you don't have to keep buying the marker over and over again when they start to get dry!

They are currently only $6.99 on the Copic website with free shipping of orders over $99.

They are way cheaper than that at Oozak ($4.99 if you have an account set up) and free shipping (in the US only - booo!) on orders over $50. I guess I'll be making a copic purchase from them soon if the price is going up - again.

Usually the if the price goes up. Oozak will raise their prices too. Something to do with their buyer agreement from the Company.

It stinks that they go up every year. I started buying the Sprectrum Noir Markers.
Spectrum Noir

The only thing I found different with these is they tend to be a bit juicy. And you need to watch where you open them.

This means the retail price is increasing by $1 each for Sketch. I am sure all retailers, including Oozak , will be forced to raise their prices.

The problem is NOT the Copic company it is the devaluation of the US dollar against other world currencies. It is particularly severe against the Yen.

I make Temari which is a Japanese craft. The books come from Japan.
5-6 years ago I paid $22-$25 for each book Now the books are $39-$42. Needless to say at those prices I only bought one must have book in the past couple of years . It cost $42.50 plus shipping. And the books are soft covers!

If our government keeps printing more money we will not be able to afford to buy the things we love.

I love my Copics and I am happy I postponed all other purchases and I bought nearly all the colors I wanted before the last two increases took affect

Well, I never could afford Copics! So glad I found Promarkers-they're not refillable but I have no illusions that I'll color so much as to need a refill! lol...not terribly good at coloring. But even still I could afford to buy a whole new marker if it should come to that

I buy all of my Copics and refills (I understand you only need to buy the marker once) from Oozak. I placed what I think will be my last marker purchase from Oozak yesterday. I will try to buy as many refills as I think I will need before the first of the year. I love my Copics, but I do not love the price. Another dollar increase added to an already pretty spendy marker just makes them too expensive (in my opinion). Even from a good value company, like Oozak, they will probably be around $6 per marker, after the next increase. I see them as an investment, but at a certain point I have to admit that I am done buying new markers. I've been extremely lucky to be able to purchase a nice collection of colors.

I appreciate Barbara's understanding of why the cost of everything is going up. Its called QE3 or quantitive ease (third time) which enables the Federal Reserve to print more fiat money (paper) which in turns floods the populace and lowers the value of the dollar (because so many more dollars are out there.)
I do not have but 4 Copics and they are lovely to color with but the price just makes me gag so I have decided I would rather buy dies or stamps etc., than spend it on Copic markers. I do not color as much or as nicely as a lot of you gals (wish I could) but just simply cannot rectify spending even $6 for one marker. I have Prisma pencils, Watercolor crayons, Tombow markers, Distress Markers which all do their job in their proper forum. Problem really is -is that I need to learn how to use what I have....I have seen spectacular coloring projects gals have done with Prisma pencils. I know, I know, Copics are so bright and clear and concise and much easier to regulate color than prisma; that's the problem with tasting the best of the best!!!

reason that I have stopped buying copics, will use what I have, no refills, and then just use water based markers or other alcohol ones, too expensive.

I made the decision not to get into them over 2 years ago. I have to draw the line somewhere in what I buy for this hobby.

Thanks so much, Annie, for letting us know about the price increase. I love my copics but I never felt the need to have every color so I don't...and at $8/maker I know for sure I won't be buying more.

For those in need of refills, check out ScrapbookPal.com Cricut Cartridges, Copic Sketch Markers & More!

Last I checked Scrapbookpal sells the markers at the same price as Oozark and the refills for a few cents cheaper...and there's free shipping on orders $25.+
And their customer service is EXCELLENT. And shipping is super fast.

Last I checked in Australia Copics were $10 each for Sketch. Compared to that $5 each from Oozak sounds like a bargain!

Well... they're already $7.99 in Canada, so I wonder what our new price will be!! (this is when our dollar is on par with the US dollar, mind you!!)

I love my Copics. I am a mixed media artist and cannot imagine life without them. But the $8.00? Holy Cow. Right now they are $6.00. Why two dollars? It seems they just went up in price a few months ago.

I am so glad I found this topic. I have been putting off buying the Copic pens because I feel they are too expensive. Recently I discovered that Joanns is carring the Noir pens and during the recent coupon commotion I bought several sets with my 50% off coupons which made the pens $1.25 each. I will need to work with them but new toys are always that way. If anybody has any helpful hints I would appreciate any input. On a side note I do miss the brush tip that these pens donot have. Specturm noir Markers are made in the UK. At least I think they are.

And they are refillable to.

I believe ShinHan Touch Twins are made in Seoul, Korea. The US dollar is traded much more favorably against the South Korean Won

$1 USD will buy 1.19 South Korean Won. So It takes about 20% LESS US Dollars to buy something priced in the Won

Where $1 USD will only buy 77 yen. It takes 23% MORE in US dollars to buy something priced in the Yen.

That difference really hurts us

The Chinese currency is the Yuan Renminbi ( RMB) . By comparison the conversion rate for the USD to the RMB is $1 = 6.30 RMB
So it cost 16 ˘ ( In RMB) to buy a product in China that is valued at $1 here.

To my knowledge, Spectrum Noir pens are manufactured in China.

Touch Twin Markers are manufactured in Seoul.

I like to think of it this way: one Copic Sketch (with upcoming price increases) plus one refill will yield approx. 15 non-refillable markers for an end price of under $1.25 each.

I believe Spectrum Noir markers are also refillable, and I have no personal experience with them, but I do believe Copic markers to be the very best that exist. That's why they're used in so many applications beyond paper-crafting.

I recently learned that each of the Superbrush nibs are hand-woven. I have not experienced a marker tip that enables the type of precision and versatility of this particular tip.

For my money, I want the very best when it comes to tools, and when I really look at price versus cost, Copic wins, hands down.

That's great-if you have the disposable income for it. Some simply do not. And if you don't, you don't. I wouldn't want to dig into my household funds to buy markers. If a person has a certain # of dollars to spend, it makes sense that they would want to get the most markers for their money and maybe get a touch less of the perceived quality. I bet they still produce great looking cards.

Another distinction of artist-quality markers such as Touch Twin and Copic is that they are primarily marketed to professional artists, illustrators, animators, etc. whose careers depend partially on the quality of their supplies. Both of these brands of markers were marketed and used as such for decades before they became popular in the paper-crafting arena. As professional artist tools, they must meet and maintain high standards of pigment quality, lightfastness, etc... just like someone who is a professional mechanic would have a higher standard for their tool kit than someone who just has tools to tinker with at home.

I'm not getting that price. I have an account set up and I get 5.29 for a sketch. Any advice on what I may be doing wrong?

The 4.99 must be the US only. Mine says 4.99.

did you sign up on Oozak? Ok I just went to Oozak's website and I'm not signed in...and the price for the Sketch Markers are $5.29 each.

I would register on their site to get the better Price. Otherwise you will pay more for everything.

It's just one of the perks for registering on their site.

* FREE SHIPPING applies only to the 48 Contiguous United States.

I don't know if many are aware of it, but I buy my Copic Markers from Jerry's Artarama. Look it up! I couldn't post the link because I haven't posted enough here yet, but it starts with www (hint- and no apostrophe when you type it in) They have specials sometimes for 20% off orders over $100 and their regular price on Copic Sketch Markers start at $5.24 each compared to full retail of $6.99. I just ordered 42 more colors last week and paid just $4.19 per marker with the 20% off AND I received free shipping.

I don't have that many Copics just the colors for skin tone mostly.

I mainly just use my Bic Mark-its or Sharpies. I know they're not refillable but they get the job done and I can get them just about anywhere.

I wish someone would make alcohol based markers with a brush tip on one end and a bullet tip on the other end, like the Copic anniversary set (that was way out of my price range). Or Copic could come out with a bullet tip nib that wold replace the chisel tip on the sketch or ciao markers. I never use that end. I am glad I have all of the Copics I want - that price increase is going to price them right out of the market for a lot of people. I hope small stamp stores don't get stuck with a lot of inventory.

Exclamation Spectrum Noir Markers

Spectrum Noir Markers are manufactured in China, for Crafter's Companion in UK. Crafters Companion has a USA division in Anaheim, California. Spectrum Noir have all the features and benefits of Copics at a fraction of the cost. They are alcohol ink, refillable, nibs are replaceable. Look for a new brush tip to be released in 2013 capable of replacing the chisel end. Sprctrum Noir have 168 colours, an accreditation program, that actually teaches and tests colorist ability. They retail for $11.95 US and Canada. Available through Canuck Crafts - Canadian Cardmaking and Scrapbooking supplies

The lady who owns my lss has said she will not raise the price on her Copics but I wonder how long she'll be able to hold out. She does a big business so maybe this is her way of thanking her regular customers. I personally decided not to get them, but I have friends who own hundreds.....I love them but I'd rather buy a plane ticket to see my mom than 20 markers at $8 each. Just my way of rationalizing the issue.

Prisma markers are also alcohol based and you can get a brush tip on one end and a bullet tip on the other end. I got mine at Jerry's Artarama.

Can someone neutral who has both tell me if the spectrum noir markers smell stronger than copics?
