I want to ask Santa Claus for new colored pencils and would love to hear about what you love about the kind you have and what kind you have.
Thanks

They have an enormous color selection, they're easy to find (even with a good sale) and they work beautifully. But they BREAK. Mine break almost constantly. I've heard that the company is good at replacing ones with broken leads - but I don't have the time/energy/money/desire to be shipping them back. I want them to *work*!
My favorite pencils are Rembrandt Lyra Polycolor pencils. These are oil based (so *no* breaking) and lay down a gorgeous rich color. Unfortunately, they don't have very many colors (comparatively) and they're harder to find.
I do still use the prismas that I have... I just use a few to fill in my colors!

I have Prismacolor and Derwent watercolor pencils. I LOVE them both, and I have never had any of my Primacolor pencil leads break. Mine have been great! And I posted my storage this morning with my color swatch sheet. You can see it in the gallery here.

You are correct they do break...and it is frustrating. A tip I heard along time ago was to warm up the oven...I think 350 but not for certain...and bake them for a bit...the wax inside the wood will melt back together. I think maybe you warm up the oven and then shut it off and then place the pencils in. I havent had to do it sincethe first time cause it worked.
I know we should not have to do this but if you have some might as well get your moneys worth out of them. You might search her on SCS for that tip a I know I picked that up here...somewhere...sometime.

Hmm, that's an interesting idea.... I've heard people say they used the microwave, but it seems 50/50 about whether or not it worked. Seems like the oven would make more sense to me - I'll have to do a search.
Thanks for the idea!

I absolutely LOVE my derwent coloursoft pencils. I've had them since July and non them broke yet even though I occasionally drop one on the floor.
They are similar to prismacolor pencils, but IMO they blend much easier.
I got the largest set (72 pencils) from Dick Blick.
I've got Prismas. Love 'em and have never had one break in the many years I've been using them. I've also heard that some love the Koh-i-Noor pencils. In watercolor, I have Prisma and DerWendt and have been very happy with both of those.
Okay....and this is from a colored pencil SNOB....I have ALL the Prismas...I use JUST 2 of them...the Flesh tone and a red....I have the Dewitt...don't use them AT ALL...and I have my FAVORITES...Faber-Castell 24 Grip Colored pencil set that I use EVERY day! It's economical, the points are wonderful, I get smooth even coverage. And, honestly, they are LIGHTER than the Primas, but so what? They color the same, and the PRICE makes them WONDERFUL!

Faber-Castell 24 Grip Colored Pencils for sure! I got them as a gift and I use them every time I make a card or scrap! Easy to hold, vibrant color, blend well... LOVE LOVE LOVE
*giggles*
I could never bring myself to spend the money on prismas and had the Dick Blick ones recommended to me by a local artist as his go to pencils, so I have those and have been very pleased. Of course I also have crayolas, and oddly a set I got out of the school supply section at walmart-72 pencils for a couple bucks and they blend quite well, although not quite as good as my Blicks. But it does make for a wide array of colors, as I have around 190 shadings to choose from. I ended up having to make a sheet with all of the by color family so I can compare side by side when picking what color to use.

Thanks for this. I have a few brands (I think only 3) that I'd like to do this with. Although I'm way jealous of all the yummy pencils *you* have!
