Change in Whisper White?
I just opened a new package of Whisper White cardstock, and I was so disappointed to note that it is a different weight than what I've had over the past two years. Anyone else have this happen, or do you think I got two new packages that are bogus for some reason? I have always loved SU's Whisper White cardstock, but if this is a permanent change, I'll buy mine elsewhere!
I've only been stamping a little over a year. My first pack seemed heavier and the next one seemed different. When I asked my demonstrator about it, she thought I was nuts. So I thought it was just a novice mistake. I dunno . . . . . .

Hi,
I experienced the same thing. In fact, the card I made tonight with whisper white had an obvious shadow on the backside where I had stamped the greeting. It looks and feels very cheap...I won't buy the whisper white again! I'm very upset as I spend more on the SU cardstock as it is typically much better quality...this is very disappointing.
Not to hijack the thread...but did you notice that the SU dimensionals are now much cheaper--feeling (not sure how to describe this). That is, they are much harder to open because the paper is so thin and they just feel "cheap."
I wonder if SU is trying to save some money by buying cheaper quality merchandise...I hope not as I love SU...but I'm not willing to pay much higher prices for lower quality. I hope someone from SU is listening.

Shawn, actually I had noticed the change in the dimensionals. I have a terrible peeling off the one side. I am going to call SU. I'll post again in the forum with what I find out.
I am not a demo but urge you to contact your demo immediately (well, not if it is the middle of the night). Almost every demo will call SU and arrange for a replacement if the product is defective. I was a demo and SU was excellent about sending a replacement if there was a problem. If the second pack still feels or looks different to you, then I'd say there is a problem, but sometimes you just get a bad batch, KWIM?

You need to let your demo know. If your demo shrugs it off, then contact SU! directly and let them know your concerns. I was going to post the number for you but I'm afraid that's against the TOS (not sure but playin' it safe)!
I'm a hobby demo - I've been with SU! for 3.5 years. I agree the Whisper White Cardstock is not the same as it used to be. I prefer the "old" WW Cardstock. As for the dimensionals ... SU! used to sell thick AND thin dimensionals and about a year ago went to selling only the "thin" dimensionals. Maybe that's the difference you are noticing? I personally have not noticed any quality issues with the Dimensionals ... in fact, they are the only ones I use after trying several other brands from my local LSS.
I hope you do decide to contact your demo and/or Stampin Up! Directly. Your frustrations deserve to be heard and that's really the only way you are going to have them resolved.

Thanks for the ideas! I just hate to contact my demo as she is such a nice lady....KWIM and I don't want her to take it personally. Maybe I will contact SU directly. Hopefully this will get resolved!

We don't take it personal If I ever start taking it personal my customers should find a new, less uptight demo. Problems happen or products change and not everyone will like the change.
The white is thinner b/c they feel most people layer it so they don't want the card to be too bulky. I am one of those bulky people, so when I turn a page in my scrapbook you can hear the *thwack* cause it's got so much stuff on it. I have started to use Naturals or Confetti c/s because I actually like the bulk.
Oh, if it has changed, you might want to check out Beckett's Expression #80 cardstock carried by www.marcospaper.com among other places. Very smooth. I have not been able to find it locally so I get it from marcos.

There has been several comments made about the white cardstock, I also thought it was thinner, and you can see thru the back. I have always loved the cardstock, but won't use white for a base any more as it is too floppy. I have been trying to find an alternate source. I love the ultrasmooth finish so I may pop over to Marco's and see what they have. I also may email dedmo support. Hopefully they will get this fixed. As far as the dimentionals, I haven't had any problems yet...

Thanks for posting this website!! I appreciate it.
There has been chatter about the white not being up to snuff, so please let your demo know, or SU. People are having issues with ink smearing as well as the lighter weight... and ITA about the dimensionals- thought it was just me!! You're not crazy!! (unless we all are!)
Thank you, myhappyplace for the logical explanation. Since most of my creations are simple single layer, I'm glad to know this info. I'm going to invest in other types of whites.
Thanks again, sooooooooo much for the honest info! (There should be an acronym for that - HI?)

My downline just received a pack of whisper white and it was way noticably thinner in weight and had a very cloudy/shiny appearance. I'm sorry but it was junk in my eyes. I told her to contact demonstrator support; however, rather than h aving her sens back the "defective" pack of paper they are sending her a new pack. Question is, how are they going to know what the issue is if they don't ask for it back. Lack of quality control in my opinion! :(
thanks to Joan's recommendation I have started using the Beckett, I got both the radience (bright then iceburg but only slightly) and the iceburg. Color wise the iceburg is closest to SU whisper white, I love it, no more smearing of my ink, the palette dries on it immediately, no so of my whisper white as of late. I did a seach for this paper and found it much much cheaper then at Marco's. I got mine at www.papermatters.com
You have to go to cover specialty card stock, then cover weight. The only bad thing about these guys is they only carry radiance and iceburg, not candlelight. I asked them to carry it they said it was not a popular enough item to carry. I have not been able to find candlelight anywhere but at Marco's. If anyone has another place I would love to hear it.

I returned the 5 packages I bought in April to my demo and a friend suggested the Walmart cardstock. I have been very happy with it. It reminds me of the old Whisper White and is substantially thicker than the new Whisper White. It is also whiter.
I ordered WW and a pack of coloured cardstock at the same time, and the WW was so much thinner. I thought it was my imagination, glad to know I'm not nuts. I was using my "other" white paper until now and now that I have the WW, I may just go back to buying the cheap stuff. It's not better than SU but it doesn't cost as much, I can buy it and have it in hand the same day, and obviously won't be giving up quality if this is the crap they are trying to pass off as the best.

I sent mine back, and they sent me two more of the same, thin stuff. I am definitely looking for a new white cardstock! I'm going to give Papertrey's white a try.
I, too, use the Beckett Expressions 80# cardstock, only I prefer the extra brightness of the Radiance to the Iceberg - it's definitely an ultrasmooth white. I ordered a CASE of it about three years ago from a local paper supplier (I figure it'll last my stamping lifetime, lol) but it came in WAY, WAY cheaper that way. But it's something to consider - round up a couple of other stampers and go in on a case price together.

Don't forget that PaperTrey has a new line of white cardstock. There is a thread around here somewhere. It's a lot heavier. I think there are other threads around about the WW SU! cardstock. Apparently, it was changed to use as a supplement to cards but not as a base? I think that is the answer I got. Unfortunately, lots of people still like to use it as a base! Anyway, it WAS changed and it was heavier at one point.
I tried the Walmart CS as my "practice" CS, and it just doesn't take color the same. Haven't tried my new Papertrey CS, but I use WW for layering as it is still the best as far as color and image crispness is concerned. I also use the shimmer white if I do a one layer card.
I'm so glad I read this thread! I, too, have been disappointed with the last package of white CS I purchased from SU. I, too, have noticed a difference in the dimensionals; the wax layer is more difficult to peel away from the dimensional itself. I still use the dimensionals though, as it is difficult to find any others that thin. They are just the right thickness for so many projects. I can't help but wonder, though, if the adhesive on the dimensionals is what changed? I've read other threads where many people have indicated less than satisfaction with the SU adhesives.
I purchase my white cardstock from Neenah paper. I love the Classic Crest Solar White paper (80 lb.) It has a super smooth finish and I love the stuff. The item number is 03249. It comes in packages of 250 for $21.56 a box.
I also love their A2 envelopes in Solar White. Item number 16350E for $22.36 per box of 250.
I love Neenah stock, too -- their Classic Crest Natural White is a very good substitute, color-wise, for the Very Vanilla. Their A2 envelopes are also wonderful, and very reasonably priced when you buy them by the box. (And I adore their Columns and Linen stocks...I could go on & on. But I won't! ) Classic Crest isn't quite as smooth as the Beckett Expression stock (which is truly ultra-smooth), but is close, and is also a good 80# weight. Now that I know a source for the Beckett, I'll be getting my Candlelight at Marco's when I finish my current ream of the Classic Crest. I've been using the Beckett Iceberg for awhile now -- have found it by the ream at Kelly Paper outlets here in CA. If you have a Kelly or Xpedx near you, try calling them and asking if they carry the Becketts. The Becketts used to be the *exact* match for the SU Ultrasmooth stocks -- sad to say, SU's has gotten very wimpy lately!

I asked on the Stampin' Up site, and they insist it is NOT lighter weight. Here is the reply I got:
Dear Anne,
Thank you for your e-mail regarding the weight of our card stock. Please know that the weight of our card stocks; including our exclusive 48 colors, Confetti, Kraft, Glossy White, and Natural are 80 lb. weight. Please know that we have not changed the weight our card stocks. However, the coating has been changed to improve absorption of the ink. The card stock has always been the same weight or thickness, but the coating is absorbed better in to the paper which makes the paper more flexible. We are constantly improving our products to be sure that they are the best on the market.
Thank you once again for your e-mail. Please let us know if you have any further questions or comments.
Sincerely,
Stampin' Up!
