Default Can someone explain the "Magnetic Mat and Ruler" system to me please

I recently saw one of these at HL (don't remember the brand) and I ASSUME it has to do with cutting but there was no cutting tool included and no instructions that I could see. I get so frustrated with "crooked cuts" with every cutting tool I have ever used, I am desperate. If it's not for cutting will someone please explain it's purpose!

I have a Basic Grey one. Its a magnetic mat and also a magnetic ruler. You use your own craft knife, xacto knife etc. You line your paper and ruler to the grids and your ruler stays still because its magnetic therefore getting a straight cut.

Tha BG one also comes with little magnets that hold you paper still!

Its a good tool but I have not used mine since I got the MM Paper trimmer!

I have this one and use it just as I love pink described. I use it when I don't want to get out my paper trimmer. I also use it w/the small magnets when I want to hold something still to glue another piece onto it. It is also self-healing, love that. In fact, come to think of it, it's my primary work surface! Handy-dandy.

I think I may give it a try...I have a Purple Cow guillotine cutter, and even though I love that you never have to sharpen the blade, I STILL get uneven cuts...it makes me crazy! It is a joke around my house as to how many different cutters I have tried and then disposed of!

I have the Basic Grey magnetic mat and love it -- but not necessarily for cutting. I love it when I am working on a layout, the magnets hold the photos, etc. in place while I work out the final page. I do cut on it but that's like a bonus. For me, the big benefit is the magnets holding my elements in place while I work through a layout

DSIL has 2, one for cutting and one for layouts.

Just remember to keep them away from computer hard-drives, especially if you use a laptop!!

Duplicate post for some reason - it's the laptop, I say.

I have one of these, I must say... it does take some getting used too. If I hurry too much I get bad cuts, if I take my time... beautiful cuts every time. I LOVE the fact that it is in 1/8" increments... now all my borders/mats are 1/8" and my cards look so much neater!
