After listening to me play every video on you tube and ooh and aah over them, today my bff/roommate offered to buy me one next week and let me pay her back a little at a time. (The benefit to her is that I make all her cards, and will be able to scan stuff for her.) I am SO excited. I've never been too interested in an e-cutter because they seem complicated, but this one seems so easy. I have troubles fussy cutting, and dies are so expensive that I think this will be a good investment.

There is no set up - it is 'plug and play'.

That said I would encourage you to read the directions before using the machine; it doesn't take that long to read them.

Too often I have been impatient and just jumped in and messed things up - things that were completely avoidable.

So having learned my lesson the hard (and sometimes costly) way, I now take the time to read the directions LOL. Sometimes our enthusiasm and excitement gets the better of us and we end up shooting ourselves in the foot...

I will go ahead and admit since getting the ScanNCut I have bought so many LaLa Land stamps. Stamps I used to avoid I am now buying because I can fussy cut them. I actually purged most of my shape stamps over a year ago because I like the fussy cut look but couldn't do it well. Now I have to buy shape stamps all over again! LOL

The samples some of you have posted are very impressive!

I was reading some of the reviews on Amazon and the complaints (other than people who just don't understand certain things....) are mostly about the mat not feeding well and the trial and error with cutting depth, ending up cutting the mats. And those who want to connect directly to the computer.

Just out of curiosity, do those of you who are interested in this machine also have a Silhouette Cameo or Portrait? Will you keep the Silhouette if you get this one?

I'm not sure if it makes sense to have them both. I've had both great success and growing-pain, user-error issues with my Portrait. At about $129, I didn't consider it a *huge* investment, but I also have limited space and I don't know if I can justify having them both.

Any thoughts from Silhouette owners? Thanks!

ETA: And another question. . . . For stamp images that do not have defined/closed edges or boundaries, if you color it, will the machine recognize the edge of your coloring as the outside of the shape and cut it?

I have a Cameo but am interested in the Scan and Cut. I have never been impressed with the Print and Cut function, it seems much easier on the S&C. I would keep my Cameo as I design shapes with Studio for cutting or printing.

I have a Cameo and the Scan and Cut would serve a different purpose. My interest in the Scan and Cut is solely to cut out pre-stamped images. It would basically serve as a very expensive pair of scissors!

I agree... I have carpal tunnel problems and take meds that make me shake so fussy cutting is not something I do. The ScanNCut is perfect for this... and SO easy!

I have other ecutters, as well, and my first thought was that the ScanNCut would be just an expensive pair of scissors (and I'd be thrilled with that!). However, after watching a lot of videos, I think I'll get more use out of it. It's got hundreds of onboard shapes, five fonts, welding, can cut around my own drawings/lettering/handwriting, has a pen attachment, handles SVGs (with the free Canvas program) and probably does other things I don't even know about yet.

I haven't been this excited about a crafting toy in quite a while. I wish I'd get the email telling me my machine is ready to be picked up!

Well said Cinnistew, I too have nerve issues with my fingers/hand arm.....I also have a Cameo as well as the Scan N Cut. One will not replace the other for me. The most miss overlooked feature of this machine is the video where she cuts leather......what machine cuts leather????? There must be some serious cutting power here. I do lots of mixed media so cutting leather is a huge ++++ for me

When it comes to the Silhouette, I wanted a smaller machine so the Portrait was a great choice and was not expensive. I have used it to cut vinyl shapes and letters, and to cut any font that I have on my computer, and stamped images and drawings. . .

But the Scan and Cut sounds immensely easier for cutting out the stamped images and drawings, and .svg can be converted for use with the Scan and Cut, and I can always print out any text from my computer and scan it in, too.

Another bonus would be having a backup scanner -- I have had my printer/copier/scanner behave temperamentally at critical moments in the past.

I guess I am now seriously considering the Brother machine and I can always sell the Silhouette if I find I'm not getting much use out of it. Now I wonder if I will hold out for further developments or lower prices . . .

I want to try cutting out stamped images for masking... if I cut on the line it should make a perfect masked image.

PaperCrafter's Corner Presents: Product Review - Brother ScanNCut (Pt. 1) - YouTube
PaperCrafter's Corner Presents: Product Review - Brother ScanNCut (Pt. 2) - YouTube

I watched these 2 video reviews of the ScanNCut last night. They are nearly an hour long each, and VERY detailed. I don't have any e-cutters at all, they always seemed so complicated and I didn't think I could make enough use of them to justify the costs. This one has me convinced I need it (or at least really, really, really want it!) I haven't seen anything bad about it that seems like a negative for me. I will save enough in the cost of dies and punches to pay for the machine I think. Fussy cutting is difficult for me, and it seems like this does a better job than even the best of fussy cutters for small, intricate areas.

I can't see any reason not to purchase one. My order is going in tomorrow!

Do you think the Scan N Cut is expensive?

In the UK it is going on sale for the first time, on a TV channel - it is rumoured that is the only place it will be available, at 399 - that is $655!!! Not sure which model it is.

Yes, I'd say it's expensive. But here I see it online for $373 at one store, $389 at Amazon, and a TV offer that shows four payments of $99. (This is the less expensive model which I would choose.)

Whether or not that is reasonable depends on how much you'll use it and if you can afford it. I know that if I purchase it at that price, there will be very little $ going out for supplies for quite awhile.

I know things change but I learnt whilst living in England most manufacturers in all areas only change the $ for a sign.

I just placed my order! Then I went through the Occasions catalog and added up the costs of the punches and dies I won't be buying now. It came to $146.65! I think this will definitely save me money in the long run!

I agree, Dianne! And thanks for sharing those videos - they give a very good impression of what it's like to operate the machine and she offers really useful tips. Definitely answered some of my questions that other videos did not.

She mentions in passing about getting cut lines on the mat and to try not to do that. But in another video, I did see someone simply cover those with blank paper so the scanner wouldn't read insignificant data, and that seems like a good work-around.

I am 95% sure I'll be purchasing it at some point. . . it just may not be at the top of the priority list of life right now. Congratulations and enjoy using your new machine!!!

I'm wondering what others think about buying punches if they have the scanncut. I definitely won't get dies, but I don't see any need for punches either. Even for punch art the snc could cut any shape, any size I want, right?

Seems like it and to be honest for me it would take less time than to get my punches out.

I do like my dies that emboss though...but there are ways to trick the eye...

I think this could replace both dies and punches, other than the dies which benefit from being embossed too. I'm thinking not only can I 'justify' this machine by the savings on dies etc not purchased in the future, but there could also be big space savings in the craft room if I can bring myself to purge the dies I have but won't need.

I haven't used a punch since I got my Silhouette! It's nice being able to size them and since you can scan around and cut most images out it pretty much eliminates the need for punches.

I am also excited about the SnC for PTI dies... I hate hate hate trying to line up the stamps to the dies and vice versa. The SnC is SO much easier!

LOLLLLL welcome to the club I'm knk maxx, vagabond, bigshot, slice, and slice elite oh my gosh and now scan n cut......I really don't feel like I have duplications they all serve different purposes for me...aside from the 2 slice machines (blush) the closest thing I have to a redundant machine IMO is bigshot/vagabond but even with these, because I follow sandwich rules for the vagabond religiously, and if I want to risk a sandwich with say a metal plate for detailed dies that is a no no on the vagabond, i'll risk it on my bigshot

I ordered from the Brother website. It was a few dollars more but I chose to do it in 4 payments instead of one.

I am now stamping a pile of images to cut tomorrow when it gets here.

Gayla, Amazon also has a decent price.

I'm not in a big rush to get it although the reviews here sure make me more interested! I have not heard of anything similar being unveiled at CHA at this point, but I'm kind of curious what a second generation Scan and Cut might look like down the road.

I have gone through a series of diecutting machines: Cuttlebug, Big Shot, Vagabond, Grand Calibur, Silhouette Portrait and Artisan X-plorer. I don't use dies or embossing folders as much as many people do, so I have not kept them all. I have a feeling that the Scan and Cut may be my final machine and could be the last one standing... or second to the last, because the X-plorer is so small it's good for quick use and I have no space issues with it. The Silhouette could hang on for a bit because it was not expensive, but I wonder if I'd use it very much if I had the Brother machine.

It's really fun to read about everyone ordering, receiving, and having fun with the Scan and Cut .

It's by Spellbinders:
https://spellbinderspaperarts.com/pr...-x-plorer.aspx

I've had it for quite some time and I believe I paid less than $75.

I liked the small size and wanted to do some work with metal and other materials that I did not want to risk with the Vagabond at the time. Also, I have sized down a lot of my supplies to fit my workspace so this is ideal for me. I don't have the space to leave things like that sitting out on my tabletop.

Here is the latest review I've found by Craft Test Dummies about the addition of a metal shim to have more success with certain materials:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCEUay_DBz4

In the first review she did, she kind of went on and on about how the "integrated handle" is not really a handle, like for carrying it around . . . I always thought by "integrated handle" they meant that the crank handle is not a separate piece that you attach (as with other machines like the Cuttlebug, I believe, Grand Calibur, etc.).

The machine has a small opening and it's not for everyone - but for me, it simplified the process of getting a quick diecut done and for trying different materials. Where to keep it is one of my concerns about the Scan and Cut, but I think that machine may just be well worth some reorganization .
