Ok now I've had a closer look I can see what you mean by not separating them and don't think I"ll be doing that!

I love my Big Shot - have used it for 3 years - the electric one. Good luck.
They have been really nice. I have sent them the pictures and the
info that they needed. So now they are looking to see what we wrong.

Wonderful. From everything I've read, this company wants to sell great products and give great service. This is an example of that. If they want the old one back make sure to send it to them - that is one way they can see what is wrong and make design changes, if needed.

New to Big Shot, annoyed by the tabs. Did you detach yours from the platform? I can't see why they are attached in the first place. Nor can I see how to detach them without making a worse problem. But I sure want them separate.

I didn't. I agree that they're kind of unwieldy though.

Maybe you can buy a new base plate the doesn't have the tabs. Mine came with no tabs so I'm thinking you might be able to find one like that.

I kept my tab plates together they do get annoying if I don't take the big shot
away from the wall far enough to work. I do find the big shot more stable/sturdy
than the cuttlebug which I sold to enable me to buy more dies lol I don't need both.

I'm having a problem and wondered if anyone has had the same issue. I have the correct sandwich for my Big Shot when running an embossing folder. However, I've noticed recently that one edge of the card stock does not get embossed enough. The other side is perfect. So I turn the folder around and run it though again. It's perfect on both sides. Even if a folder is shimmed the same problem occurs on one side. I purchased my Big Shot over three years ago from Stampin' Up. No issues until recently. On its way out? BTW...it cuts dies perfectly. Thanks.

When I bought mine I couldn't find the tabbed platform anywhere, not even online (they were sold out) and I was told they weren't being made anymore. Now I see a lot of people who have purchased the Bif Shot recently have it.

I had to purchase the all-purpose platform which came with a shim. Although I have managed to figure things out with the "sandwiches" I still sometimes wish I had the one with the tabs because most of the instructions I find online for using dies from other companies use it.

I like having the multipurpose platform with all of its parts connected together. Yes, it sometimes seems awkward to use, but the beauty of it is that I can't store any of the parts separately (read that as "can't bury them under stacks of cardstock") and they're all where I need them, when I need them. Having all the sandwich instructions in one place is also helpful.

I have found that 1 of the little screws keeps popping out of the platform stack,
either the thread on the screw or the thread on the platform is gone will have to
find another screw to keep them all together.
I've found I like them kept screwed together as they stay neat at the side when
you're feeding all your layers through one less thing to worry about

I am having the same embossing folder problem with my Bib Kick which is the same machine I understand. In addition, when I cut using my Nesties the carstock does not stay in the die. When I try to replace it to emboss, it does not fit and the embossing is larger on one side then the other. I have tried to be very careful in my placement with no success. I have to tape them all before cutting.

Mine pops out when my cutting pads are warped. It apparently stretches the paper. I do not have the same problem when using new pads. I do like to tape my dies in with the blue painters tape normally just to make it easier in the long run

Thanks, katzkreationz az. I was agreeing with Marci17 about the embossing folders not embossing on one side. This is even with flat pads.

I have one folder that doesn't emboss evenly over the whole thing. It is a stampin' up folder and the two replacements they sent me are the same. So I put a paper shim just in the area where it doesn't emboss as much.

Hi,

I have been reading this thread eagerly, as I have a Bigshot and a pile of dies and embossing folders, and have only used the thing a couple of times. I am still working out sandwiches, as some embossing folders tear the paper, and my nestabilities partially emboss when they cut. I am only up to page 16, so forgive me if these questions have been asked before. I have only the plates that came with the machine. I have a couple of long dies, and am getting Tim Holtz rosette dies for Xmas, and also the carved ornaments movers and shapers. Do I need to get the long platform, and two kinds of long cutting plates? Can I just get the wider set of the long plates and the platform? I just don't want to get something I don't need. Thanks.

Sandwich for embossing folders is flipping open the first page of the platform that came with your machine. Opened platform, Clear plate, embossing folder, clear plate

Sometimes it's your paper with embossing folders. Some are more brittle than others.

The Carved Ornaments die will work with the clear plates that came with your machine. Clear plate, die, paper, clear plate.

For the strip die you'll need:
Sizzix.com - Sizzix Accessory - Extended Spacer Platform

Or these (these will work for strip dies AND the longer dies - BigzXL) :
Sizzix.com - Sizzix Accessory - Essentials Platform
Sizzix.com - Sizzix Accessory - Cutting Pad, Extended, 1 Pair

Default trial and error

My machine didn't come with a set of plates hooked together with instructions. I actually got no instructions, so have had to read this and go to the web many times.

I just have worked with the machine lots.

YES you will need the longer cutting mats, boards, etc.

Have fun learning how to use it. I love mine.

Thanks so much! So I just get the wider extended cutting pads and the wider extended platform, and use those for the strip dies as well. So then I don't need the skinny extended cutting pads or the skinny extended platform? Great

Based on calling "wider" side to side the slot that the sandwiches go into the Bigshot, there is only 1 size that I am aware of. If you are calling "wider" the end that actually goes thru the BigShot, yes you will need the longer one. The size I have is 6 1/4" x 13", with the 6 1/4" end is what you put in first. The clear cutting pads are same width, but about 15" (I didn't measure them)

I saw two different widths of longer extended cutting plates. One quite skinny to match the long dies, and one the same width as the usual cutting plates.

It has been a while since I've been BIGSHOT shopping, so I'm not aware of the narrow cutting plates.

I can see the value of having both sizes, just because of wear and tear. I do only have the size of cutting plates I described before and so far they are working fine.

Good luck enjoying learning how to use it. Don't get frustrated - every piece of paper requires a different sandwich. Sometimes I just add a couple pieces of copy paper to get the sandwich just right, thus a good impression - that takes experiementing.

I've wondered if humidity also has something to do with it, just like it makes a difference with breadmaking.

HAVE FUN!

I want a Big Shot. I'm reading all the posts and learning. I can't afford every thing at once. I like the SU framelits/embosslits. Should I start there? The Big Shot at M's, does it com e with everything I need to get started? Or would buying the SU version be better?

My first dies were the oval and circle nestabilites and the oval and circle scallop nestabilites (spellbinders) and I progressed from there. They are really expensive over here so I only pick what I'll use often, I have quite a few now. I started with christmas embossing folders those were Cuttle bug ones.

Does brand make a difference, I personally don't think so, as I've since picked up some really great cheap dies and embossing folders. Others may have a different view??

I would definitely go to Michaels with a 50% off coupon and get the Big Shot there. It would be alot cheaper. And yes, it would have everything you need to get started.

I would agree with Kduff on getting the Nestabilities Circles and Scalloped Circles first. Concentrate on getting the basic shapes. Circles, ovals, squares and rectangles. Scrapbookpal.com has all the Nesties and Spellbinders at a really good price as well as the embossing folders and they have free shipping if you spend $25.00. Not to mention they are quick to ship.

Good Luck with your purchases.

I just came from Michael's and they had a big shot vintage for $24.99. Since I'm not familiar with the vintage, I didn't buy it. There is pink/back and blue black big shot. Which one should I consider? I won't be able to buy til May.

Another question. How much "muscle" does it take to use this machine? I have a muscle disorder and my arm is weak. I may not have the muscle power to crank the sandwich thru.

OMG - I just *love* the color of the new Big Shot !!! I've postponed getting one - and I'm kind of glad I did procrastinate, as I'd really like to get this new powder blue machine!

I just hope that Amazon or other "discounted" places end up carrying it, so I don't have to spend a lot more than I would on one of the 'older' machines. I know - it's only the color of the plastic - but still, it's SO much nicer looking than the black one - I just don't care for black very much.

If you haven't already seen it, here's the new machine at the Sizzix site - they say it will be in the stores in May.

Default I can't wait!

I can't wait for the Magnetic Platform to come in! Now Spellbinders, Edgelits and Framelits (and other metal die cuts) will hold still when you put the sandwich through the machine. I've had so much trouble with papers moving and using post-its is well....just a pain!

I think this is going to be one of my favorite new tools!
