Default Framelits from StampinUp! hard to position in BigShot?

I have the new Framelit's and have a hard time keeping them in position when making the sandwich and sending it through the BigShot. Somewhere . . and I can't find it now . . it seems I saw someone that used the magnetic sheets somehow to position the Framelits. Is anyone familiar with this?

I have used the magnetic sheets. They are made by Spellbinders. However, you do need to adjust your sandwich a bit because they do take up space. I am now using 1/2" drafting tape. I bought it at Hobby Lobby. It doesn't stick to the die. I use a small piece on the outside edge of the die and the excess card stock. It holds perfectly. It may stick to the excess card stock, but since I cut my card stock close to the size of the die, there's really no waste.

If you're running them through cut side down you can use a little tape to hold them in place.

The Spellbinders magnetic sheet is for use with spellbinders and machines other than the Big Shot apparently. Spellbinders has said in some materials that the Spellbinder Magnetic sheet used with the Big Shot can damage the Big Shot. They weren't specific as to the problem though. You could call Sizzix and ask if they are aware of the issue or have ideas about using a magnetic sheet as a base instead of a cutting material.

Lots of people are using post-it's to hold paper and die in place. Or you can Dotto the die in place then Dotto the paper to the cutting plate. I've been using painters tape to good effect.

Thanks so much for the ideas! Perhaps I did dream the thought that you could use the Stampin UP Magnetic Sheets to hold them

Smile Love this board!

I've been reading this board for a while! Happy to say I finally just retired my old red Sizzix and got my Black, Pink and White Big Shot! I've been wanting her for a long, long time. I kept looking for her locally and couldn't find her and I so dislike ordering things online. But that was the only way to get her.

Wow....I don't know how I survived without this machine! In fact, have to say I love it even more than the Cricut, which I find to really be a pain. I love simplicity, doing things fast and well.....I'm in love. She even matches my Diva Den!

I need to locate the tan embossing mats. I have some mats but I need the wide ones. Also think the magnetic mat would be a very good idea. Will have to find these and order.

This board is so helpful with ideas! Thank you all for sharing! Now to get access to Stampin Up and other demonstrators. I think I might join just to buy product and share with friends.

I'm so happy. Wish i bought this machine sooner! Now to find a home for the old Sizzix.

I don't have the tan mats either. I don't really know what they do. I bought the Sizzix Texturz Accessory - Silicone Rubber and I thought that was all I needed.

What do you plan to do with the tan mats?

Hi Ladies, I didn't have the tan mats either, so I purchased rubber gasket material at Home Depot and it works quite well! Hope this helps!

The tan mats are used for embossing.

Four dollars! I got ripped off for sure! LOL! Is it new?

I have the Big Shot Pro and I had a really difficult time finding all of the accessories I needed for it. It really added to the cost of the purchase, having to buy all of the extras to go with it.

The tan mats came out before the sizzix ones did. I bought my tan mats a few years ago. They are made by Spellbinders for their machines (and others, I guess).

No, do not give up the Revolution yet; it is a small and handy machine. It is very good for cutting smaller dies with intricate details like Spellbinder, Cheery Lynn..

My Revolution has been gathering dust for a couple of years too until I heard about this. I tried and found that it works.. Now, it makes regular appearances

Default Is the BS opening larger than the Cuttlebug?

I've been reading through this board and I'm thinking of getting a BS or BigKick but before I purchase one, I'd like to know if the 'slide through opening on the Big Shot is larger than the Cuttlebug. Can I fit a wider piece of paper in the BS other than a standard A2 size. I went to M' & J's but neither store had a Big Shot out to look at. Only views are on-line and I'm not good in math. Does the BS measurement mean we can use an 8 1/2" size paper or 6 1/2" ? Hope this makes sense.

Any input is greatly appreciated.
Best, Mollyz

The Big Shot is about the size of a Cuttlebug. The plates are only 6 inches wide. If you are looking for something larger, I would suggest the Grand Calibur. That is also available at Michaels and JoAnn's. One of my friends has one and they really like it. I am considering it myself. I now have both the cuttlebug and the big shot.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I appreciate your quick response. You just saved me from making a big mistake. I own a Cuttlebug and thought hmmm if the dies are interchangable, is the opening be the same size? The Big Shot opening is deceiving w/o seeing it in person. IMO it looks wider than the C'bug. I know Sizzix sells a 12x12 big shot but that's way too expensive. I will look into the Grand Calibur.

Thanks again.
Best, Mollyz

On my big shot, the cutting pads are 6-1/8" wide and the opening is about 1/8" wider, so about 6-1/4".

I am interested in what I am supposed to use the rubber mat for.
I have embossing folders that go through without a mat. Am I supposed to use a mat when I do this?

No, you don't use your rubber mat with embossing folders. I use my mat when I want to emboss using Nestabilites. After I cut out the form, I run it back through with the mat to get the embossed look around the edges. Hope that makes sense.

hmmmm... trying to visualize.
So you cut the paper with your die, then run it through again with the rubber mat so you can get the texture from the die without a cut??

Maybe someone can help me. I love my bigshot.

However I bought some Darice brand embossing folders and cant get them to work. Its either too thick or not thick enough.

Anyone else have this issue?

Hmm... I have the Darice embossing folders, no problem. I use them like the normal embossing folders from CB. This is my usual sandwich.

from the bottom up:
  • multipurpose platfrom with the first tab lifted
  • embossing folder with paper inserted
  • silicon rubber from Sizzix (or you can use the embossing tan mat from Spellbinder)
  • Sizzix Impressions pad.

Crank it through your bigshot. It may feel "loose" as it goes it through. Check the degree of embossing; if you feel that the embossing is not deep enough, add a sheet of cardstock to shim; repeat and check results..

Have fun

I don't have Darice (that I know of) but this is the sandwich I use for the CB ones
from the bottom up:

multipurpose platfrom with the first tab lifted
cutting pad
embossing folder with paper inserted
cutting pad

I only use the silicon rubber or the tan embossing mat and Impressions pad when using embosssing plates.

I hope one of our suggested recipes works for you.

I have had my white and red Big Kick for about 15 years. I just love it and use it all the time. Because I am worried something will happen to it and I would be distraught I purchased a used one on ebay for a spare. Unfortunately the maching arrived broken. The shipping materials inside did not stand up to shipping. I have a message into the seller and I am sure she will take care of refunding me since the box was not damaged by the shipper, but I am in mourning that a Big Kick is ruined. I guess I will purchase a new one. I was just hoping to not spend so much since I already have one and I am just trying to have a back up.

The red and white Big Kick hasn't been around for 15 years. I got it when it first came out (around 2004). It's been going strong since then, though, and I would definitely get another one if it broke. Before the Big Kick, I had the original Sizzix with the handle that you pressed down while sliding the die through the machine. I still have the original machine, because of the very reason you've mentioned. I'm afraid that I wouldn't be able to ship it safely if I sold it. I hope you get your money back.

I did take pictures. My husband thinks that the shipper will not refund due to no damage to the box and lack of protective packaging. No peanuts, styrofoam, or airbags. Just newspapers for packing. I haven't had a response from the seller yet, but she has a 100% feedback so I am sure she will contact me.

the "magnetic base" is not magnetic, it's metal so the movers and shapers dies will stick to it - THEY have the magnets on them.

Just thought I'd throw that in!

Ok ladies I need your help. I just broke my bug. My Dh thinks he can fix it but if not I need to know which one I shoulld order. I loved my bug but is the bigshot a more dependable and stronger machine? Also I have alot of extra B plates, and extra C plate and all the extended plates for the bug. If I purchase a bigshot do I need to buy all the different plates for it ? I am wondering if it is better for me to just get another bug. They say that it is made to be stronger but what broke in mine is inside where the handle is. The metal plate split in half. My DH is going to try to put a metal brace on it to hold it together. Eveything else works. When I try to emboss of cut It spreads apart and only has pressure on the opposite side.
Please let me know what you think.
Thanks so much for your help

stampin T, yes, you would have to buy plates compatible with the BS. Like the bug, it will come with some, but not all that are available. I suspect the thickness is different than the CB ones, but maybe someone with both machines will tell you if the bug plates will work if you adjust the sandwich a bit.
I've never owned a bug, but I love my BS.

If anyone is in need of a Big Shot, Joann's has them on sale for $59 (with free shipping) through this weekend. I currently have a Cuttlebug but have had issues with it cutting the really intricate dies, so I went ahead and took advantage of the sale at Joann's and bought the Big Shot. Can't wait until it arrives and I can start using my intricate dies!

I'm interested to know if you have more success with the BS. Please keep us posted.
