If you don't want it to cut up your MPP, change the order of the sandwich like Alicia does:

Multipurpose Platform Tab 2
Clear Cutting Pad
Die blade side up
Paper
Clear Cutting Pad
Roll Through Big Shot

This way it is not against the softer plastic of the MPP. I use this sandwich and because the cutting plate is a lot harder plastic, the bottom one doesn't get any marks on it. I never did see the sense in the order that Spellbinders recommends; I can't help wonder if they've ever tested it.

BTW, thanks Alicia for the wonderful sandwich stacks. I use them all the time; I have a copy printed out and sitting right beside my BS.
Makes total sense. Thank you!

Now- correct me if I am wrong (all these sandwiches sure can get confusing!):
But that's for cutting only, right? What about when you want to emboss after you cut? Is there a sandwich for that where you don't have to put the Nestie on the MPP? I don't have a magnetic sheet- what is that and where do you get one???

Thank you so much Alicia!

My question remains, however: what about embossing?

Alicia, you're awesome!! Thank you so much! I have all these things so now I am ready to go. I was getting so frustrated and feeling like I had wasted my money. Now I am totally excited again to play with the (too many) Nesties sets I have bought!
Thank you, thank you!!

Default Cutting & Embossing in One Step

After much trial-and-error, frustration, and cursing , I've finally come up with a sandwich that works for me when I want to cut and emboss my Spellbinders dies in one step. Keep in mind that this does not produce an extremely deep embossing, but it is definitely noticeable enough for me. In addition to the usual materials, you will need a magnet sheet. It is just the right thickness, and it keeps the dies from sliding around. I bought one at Michael's for a few dollars. Here is the sandwich, from top to bottom:

Clear Mat
Cardstock/Paper (face-down)
Die (blade-up)
Magnet Sheet
Clear Mat
Multi-Purpose Platform

You might try adding a cardstock shim, but it was too thick for my comfort. I don't like forcing things through my BK. I hope this works as well for you as it does for me. (I will be cross-posting this in the Wizard forum.)

If you put the card stock face down and then the die cut blade up, how does it cut through the paper?

I'm sure the reason I don't use my Big Shot very much is I just don't get it.

You put the paper patterned side down over the die. As long as the blade is against the paper, it will cut. This will ensure that your paper is embossed on the correct side and faces the right way.

Note the order of the stack was from the top down. I suspect you were thinking from the bottom up. The MPP is always on the bottom, so start there and follow the recipe to the next item and so on through the rest of the list.

Can I ask for the sandwich order for using PTI's impression plates? I just broke my acrylic plate doing the sandwich I 'thought' was right.
THANKS!!!

Ouch! Are the impression plates like Sizzix Texture plates or Fiskars texture plates? The same thickness? I don't have any of PTI's so I can't test it out for you but if they are the same thickness I can give you that sandwich.

If it is the same thickness as the Sizzix Texturz Plates

MPP NO tabs
Texturz plate, design face up
Paper or cardstock face down
Silicone rubber sheet
Impressions pad

Run through Big Kick

For Fiskars:
MPP Tab 1
2 paper shims
Texture plate, design face up
Paper or cardstock, face down
Silicone rubber sheet
Impressions Pad

Run through machine.

You can shim it too with thin copy paper - do tests and figure out how many shims you need to get how deep of an impression you want but never force it through the machine.

I've never used clear plates with any of my texture plates.

I have a question and I hope it has not been answered 100 times, sorry if it has....
I purchased the Bigz die- Frame oval scallop @ Jo-Ann's, do you know if it the same size as what SU sells? The die itself is smaller than the others from Stampin Up... I couldn't resist, it was really marked down and then I got 10% off....

Nope its smaller and rounder than the SU die. I fell into the same trap. I assumed since it was a Sizzix die and the name was the same it must be the same. At the time I wasn't aware that the SU version is exclusive to SU and so not sold elsewhere (shame on me since I'm an SU demo). On the other hand the smaller size often works better for some projects so its still a die worth having especially at the low, low sales price I got it for.

I seemed to have jammed my big shot and my items are stuck and it won't budge when I try to turn the cranker. I thought I could unscrew the base to help loosen the unit and get the pads out but no such luck. Any recommendations on I how I can get items out?

Good luck but the same thing happened to my cuttle bug and my hubbie tried undoing every possible screw that was on the unit but to no avail , the only way I was able to retrieve my die was to break the unit which wasn't easy either - so sad - I hope you have better luck than I did - hoping someone else has an idea

Can't tell you how to unjam your Big Shot, but if you purchased it from Stampin' Up!, there's a 3 year warranty.

This happened to my sizzix side kick - it jammed solid, we took it apart, managed to get the thing in bits, but the cog inside had snapped. I then bought a big shot in the hope that it was more durable - so far so good (in my experience). I'd go with the warranty idea - this would have worked for me if I'd kept my receipt!
good luck!

I will be purchasing a Big Shot in the next few days. Do you recommend I purchase any additional mats/shims/etc?? I want to be able to emboss right away. I have no embossing folders either.

Thank you!!!

Default RE: Big Shot Embossing Folders

HI Craftyteaspoon

You will not need anything extra to use the embossing folders. Your sandwich (from bottom to top) will be the

Multipurpose platform set at Tab 1
Standard cutting pad
Embossing folder (with card stock inside) and
Standard cutting pad.

Since the MPP and standard cutting pads come with the machine, you will be all set except for the embossing folders. Have you seen the ones from Stampin' Up? They are just beautiful!! I recommend them highly!! They give a wonderful impression.

Since all machines are calibrated differently, you might want to try the embossing folders through your machine and if they cut too deeply go down one tab. My machine cuts very deeply, so I sometimes need to use the base platform for my embossing folders

If you are going to emboss from texture plates, you will need to get the silicone pad. Love, love, love my Big Shot. I purchased the Cricut first and ended up selling it because I didn't use it like I use the Big Shot. Enjoy!

I'd recommend getting a load of the Cuttlebug embossing folders - these are fab and leave a much better impression than the sizzix texture plates. You don't need anything at all with them - just the basics that come with the big shot. I found the cuttlebug embossing folders to be the best value too..

Embossing folders are awesome! There are so many to choose from. Scrapbookpal.com has the A2 (card size) folders for 3.99. If you spend $25.00 you get free shipping. They also have a great selection of the 5 x 7 embossing folders. There adhesive is a good price as well.

ACMoore has cuttlebug folders for $4.99 and if you sign up for rewards, you can get coupons emailed to you weekly for at least 40% and sometimes 50% off. Michaels has them also but range from $4.99 to $5.99 per folder. I have quite a few. Michaels doesn't email the coupons as often, but you can still get them in newspapers.

Does anyone know anything other than what's in the catalog about the Big Shot die storage boxes in the new catalog? I know if my dies were more easily accessible and not dumped in a rubbermaid box I would likely use them more. Just wondering how sturdy they are and whether anybody has one and their opinion of it. thanks!

Question Big Shot sold in stores????

Is the Big Shot sold in any stores? So far I can not find one in a store, only on-line. Joann's only carries the Big Kick as does Michaels. That's about it for craft stores near me (), except for Hobby Lobby but the one I went to had no Sizzix machines at all.

Really didn't want to pay shipping on such a heavy item.

I've never seen one in a craft store. I bought mine from a Stampin Up demonstrator. It probably cost more that way, but if you can find it online, even with shipping you would probably pay less. It is $99 in the SU catalog. Then you pay 10% shp and handling and your sales tax.

The nice thing about the SU one is it has a longer warranty. Mine is not the SU machine. I'm not really a fan of black.

I am not sure where to "ask a question" but I am wondering if there is a die (that can be used in my Big Shot) for a regular sized envelope that is approximately 5 3/4" x 4 3/8". I think that I have seen some Sizzix dies but I believe they are for the Big Shot Pro. Can these dies be used in the regular Big Shot? I am new to the Big Shot world.

I just bought my Big Shot on e-bay and saved a bundle of $$$. In the Stampin Up Canadian catalogue, the Big Shot is $132.95. With shipping & taxes the total would have been $164.14 (Can $$) - YIKES!. I found one listed on e-bay as a "Buy It Now" for $56.95. I had it shipped to my niece who is in college in North Dakota - cheaper than shipping to Canada. Even after shipping and exchange, the total was only $69.15 (Can $$). The machine was brand new - still packed in the sealed plastic clam shell. Now, I just have to learn how to use it efficiently!

I heard several people say they could get them for around $60 but I don't do online shopping. I love my Big Shot. Well worth the money I spent. I got all the texture plates SU had and I have purchased a lot of Cuttlebug and Sizzix folders in ACMoore and Michaels. I also bought some alphabet dies so I can cut letters.
