What have you found to be the best and worst adhesives for attaching your DP to a composition book? I am looking for the longest lasting option because I hope the book I plan on making will be well used. I don't plan on using very many embellishments, but what are the best glues for those too?
I just use an ATG gun. But I have "heard" on these threads that some folks like to use Mod Podge so they can stick the paper down and then coat the outside too. My 2 worth is that I wouldn't like a coating because the composition books are bendable and I would be afraid that the Mod Podge would crack.
I have always used Modge Podge on all my books, and I do put a coating on top too. I spread it VERY thin, and I have not had a problem with cracking or anything else. Here is a book I use weekly and have since September. It still looks great, and this thing gets toted and carried around a LOT! The cover of this is the same cardboard as the composition books.

I just altered some composition books, and used matte Perfect Paper Adhesive both to adhere and to coat. A couple of things to know about the PPA--it will smear dye-based inks!! I don't know what happens with pigment inks, so do a test to find out. Also--you can stamp on top of the coated paper after it's dry, but you'll need to use a heat gun to set the ink or let it dry for a few hours before handling.
I would use Modge Podge or decoupage glue if you want the comp book to last. It really seals the paper and actually adds a protective layer. One advantage with decoupage is after 4 weeks the item is "cured" and you can actually clean it with a damp cloth. If you just ATG tape, it will not protect the paper, which can still tear and will be more likely to stain. Just remember not to overhandle the paper once it's been glued because it will be wet and very delicate.
I made several books many years ago for my kids using the red liner tape and the Stampin' UP! glue stick.. everything is still stuck on to this day. Pam

I did journals for a missions trip three years ago - teenagers, stuff tossed around... You get the idea! They are still holding strong. I used my ATG. Love it, love it!
I use PPA too, no more Modge Podge. Also, the BEST product that was created for book altering and gluing paper is: PVA by a company called Lineco or Books By Hand --http://www.booksbyhand.com/bbhtools.htm-- if you want to see what the product looks like. You can't buy this product on their website--maybe at most Specialty Art Stores. I haven't seen it at the chain stores.
It comes in a Black & White bottle. Brush it on with a foam brush. Once I was introduced to this product, I highly recommend it and I only use PVA for book altering. Tape adhesive can get too expensive to use for this.
I run my dd paper through the xyron machine. Any ribbon I attach with red liner tape....sometimes I use glue dots for those small embellishments. I have made books for teachers in the past and they are still coming up to me and telling me how much they love their books and use them all the time.

The project I was trying to think of what glue would work was adhering paper to cardboard (matt board) doing "sheet folds" to the inside and glueing another paper over the time to get it all neat and tidy. I thought of modge podge but was wondering with all the folding in of the corners if it would REALLY hold. On craft tv they had a project where they said to use "book glue." Is this one and the same of what you all are talking about? And what is ATG?

do you ever have an issue with bubbling? I find that when using Modge Podge it's difficult for it not to "bubble up". It bums me out when it does this. Any thoughts on how to prevent it?

'Book glue' is generally PVA glue, it has a lot of the same features as Mod Podge. I have a bottle (bought at a more collage/altered arts type store) that has worked very well. You brush on a thin layer & set your paper on it - I have done topcoats to some & not to others, seems to work great either way. It is def a cost effective way to cover these books if you intend to do more than a few. ;)

I LOVE * LOVE * LOVE your book...WOWEY!! If I could make one that looked half that good, I'd be in heaven! That ribbon is gorgeous and I love all the colors, etc. used. GREAT JOB..I am so jealous!! hahaha
I also use the PVA adhesive with a moist foam applicator. I brush the adhesive around, lay the paper on the book, then go over it with my brayer to insure any air buble are removes or blobs of any type. It's a great adhesive for altering comp books and lasts a very long time!~!!! Very cost effective!

thanks!
I have had a few problems with SLIGHT bubbles. Years ago when I first started using Modge Podge I put it on too thick, and it bubbled a lot. The key is to put a VERY thin layer on. If you get one or two slight bubbles, they should be gone by morning. The other key is to make sure your adhesive on the back side of your paper (whether it be with a glue stick or whatever) covers EVERYTHING. If there is a small spot you miss, that area will pull up and bubble because the paper wasn't adhered well to the book, clipboard, or whatever. KWIM? Hope that helps.

I have also decorated the composition books and I have just used the spray glue but that is starting to come up on the sides so the next one I do I am going to try using my Xyron 510 with permanent adhesive. Just a thought! Let me know if anyone has used the Xyron Please
To adhere cardstock/paper to the composition books I use Yes! Paste, which I get from Michaels or Hobby Lobby. I like the paste because it is not wet and won't wrinkle the paper. I have tried glue sticks and other glues, but always go back to Yes. For ribbons I use the red vinyl lined double sticky tape and I do like Glue Rings. They are so easy to use and require no dispensers.

Forgot to say that I use Diamond Glaze or Glossy Accents to put embellishments on the covers. It works great for Rhinestones, flowers, chipboard, etc. You do not need a lot and it does dry glossy.
