Anybody want a Clip-It-Up for $20.00?

My DD and I have been salivating over the Clip-It-Up for a while now. Neither of us can pay $100. for one. :rolleyes: I found instructions for a homemade CIU and we are going to finally have one in our hot little hands for 1/5th of cost!! :-D

You can alter the size to fit your needs easily! Anissa has her top *hanging ring* 8" dia. The original Clip-It-Up has both *hanging rings* 12" dia (same as the base). You can order the clipies or use clothes pins, altered paper clips, binder clips, etc.

A question...so you have never seen something and said to yourself, "I can make that myself for a fraction of the cost" and then gone home and done it? IMO, if you are going to market something that everyone is going to "have to have", it better be an original enough design that either no one CAN copy or no one will WANT to...only the original will do. This is just a fact of life and it is what people do. I am probably guilty myself (don't have one of these however).

Not trying to start a big brewhaha...just sayin'.

saw this coming............. Yes I understand the mentality that people want to have everything for cheap, but sometimes life's about choices and you can't have everything. No, I don't take other people's ideas, but I value integrity.

I too do not want to start a debate of morals, values etc I was just providing the information for people that may NOT be as handy with tools that would like to get this invention from it's original creator.

If you can go and make one for $20, the person with the "original" idea shouldn't go over charging people like that. I would never pay $100 for something like that. $20 on the other hand is reasonable.

If you could buy it $30 or make it for $20 it would seem like more of a support issue to me. But this is just a good idea gone greedy.

I wouldn't judge so harshly. You don't know what all went into her product, or the quality. I bet she didn't use a clay dish for the base, like the imitation does.

But I'm not above using a clay dish for one. I can't justify spending $100 when a $20 one does the same job. It doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't want one. wouldn't use one, but $100.00 seems exorbitant for what it is and does. I thought the home made version looked pretty good, and for an $80.00 savings and very little effort, making rather than buying it would seem to be a no-brainer. I don't think it has anything to do with moral values, but has everything to do with the value of a dollar.

BUT.......If she didnt want people to copy it she woulda never posted teh directions right??? I am sure on that case since she did she wouldnt mind and was actually trying to help her fellow stampers out

It's my understanding that it was not the Clip It Up owner who posted the directions but rather a fellow stamper.

In answering a previous post inquiring Clip it Up owners whether they like it, I really love mine and am about to order a second! Sometimes ingenuity is worth the price and it's a very high quality product!:mrgreen:

Yeah. I'm not above using the clay dish either, but I still wouldn't call it a good idea gone greedy. You don't take into account all the effort and money (overhead) that goes into developing a product. And the final product probably isn't mix matching pieces from the hardware store.

I apologize if I've stirred up some bad feelings. I certainly had no intentions of doing so. I posted the info. because there are a lot of people like me that are
on a fixed income and have very little spendable cash to support their *rubbah habit*. There is absolutely no way I could ever afford to buy the original Clip-It-Up. It is really nice - a fellow scrappin' buddy has one.
I love the idea of a hanging rack cause I'm one of many that don't use what I have unless its in plain sight. Plus, I hate scrambling through stuff for 30 mins. to find what I KNOW I have... somewhere...! Now, that really kills all my creative energy!
Yes Mam, this is very ingenious and I do praise the designer of the Clip-It-Up. No, Anissa is not the creator, she simply loved the concept and designed her own with ez to get pieces. I have no intentions of making/selling Anissa's version.
I haven't bought the stuff to make mine yet, I plan to use what I have as I go. I did buy the tiny binder clips. You can get them anywhere, Target, Wal-Mart, office supply stores, etc. To hang the clips, I've thought of a bent paper clip, or just bend a strong piece of wire into a 'S' shape.. just have to see what I come up with when I get there.

I ordered the original clip-it-up and liked it so well that I ordered a second one. Customer service was excellent (I ordered off of the clip-it-up website). I paid about $80 for each, but for me, they are worth it. I could never make one...

Okay, so I showed these links to my husband asking him to help me make one. (I didn’t know what drill bit to buy or where to find the bolts and washers in the store). Well, my mathematician hubby pointed out that it would actually be cheaper and easier to buy one since they are on sale at http://www.doodliedoo.com.

See, I looked around and couldn't find any clips/tabs that would look or would work as well as the Clip-It-Up ones did. So, I figured I'd just make the base/upper, then buy their hooks and tabs from Doodliedoo. From the looks of the picture, the lady who posted the instructions, Anissa, also bought the Clip-It-Up ones. Well, I wanted to get the same amount that the Clip-It-Up came with, figuring that was the amount needed to get it more or less full. It comes with 120 clips and 40 tabs. With the amount that come is single sets, I’d end up buying 125 clips and 45 tabs. With shipping, the total was about $45. So, $45 plus the $20 (estimate) for supplies is $65, plus the time it takes to make it, you'd be better off pre ordering one at $68 and paying $8.95 shipping for me - coming to $77. So, $12 more and I don't have to go to the store, search for the items and the trouble of assembling it. Plus, I think the official one looks sturdier than the home-made one (although I do like how simple and plain the home-made one looks).

So, my personal conclusion is that I'm just going to pre-order. If it wasn't on sale, I'd be going to Home Depot tomorrow and making it myself, but since it is on sale (and I'm such a sucker for sales), I figure why not?

I also know that they sell those clips at IKEA. Pretty cheap too. I used them to modify an over the bed netting for my daughter.
Now about that CASE-d idea for less...I completely understand and give kudos to the original designer, and because of her Anissa was inspired. Of course some will purchase the original and others will design their own. (I'm in the neither section - I think better in a mess.) However, there is a huge market for both! Which is why some drive Mercedes and others drive Hondas. They both work in the favor of the owner as well as the owner's budget. So all you clip-it fans, enjoy! And all you crafty handywomen, have fun!

Interesting viewpoint! I think that by creating a handmade card instead of buying one you are using products intended for sale as card making supplies. You are supporting the stamp company, the paper company and the embellishment companies. This is entirely different than picking up a Hallmark card in a store and photocopying it 50 times to give as your Christmas cards, kwim? I don't know thing one about the Clip It Up company, other than I love mine from a consumer standpoint, but I do know that someone(s) has invested much time, money and effort to create a product and build a company. They've also paid attorneys to patent protect their design which leads me to believe this is their livelihood, or at least they would like it to be. I'm not saying whether someone who uses their idea to create one w/o purchasing it from the original creator is right or wrong, that is different for everyone. It's not right for me, but I won't even copy CD's, I just feel artists deserve payment for their artwork. I know I'm in the minority with this attitude, but I feel you give credit where credit is due! Credit in this way being defined by my dollar.

This is not the first time my mentality has been questioned, and I'm sure it won't be the last. The question has always been how high my I.Q. is rather than how low.
I offered Alissa's website for those that really want a Clip-It-Up and can't afford the real one, or simply wish to save a few bucks. It is a great invention, but, IMHO, way over priced. I will never consider paying $100. for a pair of tennis shoes, I don't care WHO's name is on them. I have designed and made my own clothes as well as copying top designers. I have incorporated designer rooms into my home with my own ingenuity.
If you want to pay the price then go for it. It's your money to spend however you wish. If you can sleep better at night knowing you own a genuine Clip-It-Up, by all means, buy it. I wouldn't sleep at all!
