Hi all! I'm thinking if getting my teen girls some Peerless watercolor sheets. They saw a video on YouTube by K.Werner () and totally flipped! My question is, what brand of paper do you use and how do you use it? The paper can get pretty expensive, so I'm thinking I may get them each a nice spiral bound book, as well as a cheaper sheaf of paper for them to practice on. Any input is much appreciated, as I am totally out of my element here!
Peerless papers are my favorite watercolor medium. I buy Strathmore 300 series "yellow pads" at Michael's when it goes on sale. I always get great results with this paper. I buy the 9 x 12 and cut it down.
I haven't tried Peerless (it is pricey). Try youtube and look into Brusho or powdered watercolor. It is a neat technique.
As to watercolor paper, I buy tablets of them at Hobby Lobby or Michaels.
The initial outlay may seem pricey, but these papers have a lot of color in them. I cut 1 1/2" - 2" square of the paper, mount on a piece of water color paper and just dab with a wet bush. The little sheets last for a long time before you have to replace them. I've never replaced my sets of papers I bought years ago. Another great thing is that they don't have to be sharpened, they won't get hard, and they travel great.
Just a thought, you may already have thought of this. Loose sheets might be better anyway, depending on what they might want to do with their art. Framing it, pinning it up or giving it to their friends would mean tearing the pages out of a spiral book.
I had never heard of these sheets, so I'm glad you started this thread.
I love the peerlees watercolors and the sheets are big enough so you can cut them in half and each teen will have her own. Also, I love the Canson XL watercolor paper. It works really well for the price. They can use it and practice and if they seem to enjoy it, you can always invest in more expensive watercolor paper later.
UPDATE:. Thanks so much for all the input! I did buy my girls the peerless watercolor sheets pack (for each to cut in half and share as staceylovespaper suggested), as well as each of them a spiral notebook of 110 lb Canson Montval watercolor paper (from eBay). I also got them one pack of watercolor paper that is sized quite large for them to share, cut down and experiment with. (Maybe they will even share with me!) That paper I got at Michaels, using my 50% off coupon. I don't remember what brand it was, but I believe it too was 110 lb. Thanks again for all the input! Merry Christmas y'all!
Angie what wonderful gifts for your girls, I love my Peerless paints.....I need to practice more. Wishing you and yours and to anyone else reading this thread, a very merry Christmas and a happy, inky 2017. I feel truly blessed to be part of this amazing community.
