I am addicted to my watercolor crayons right now.

I have a Spring Fever too. I just finished my Spring Cleaning. Next week I put my garden in if the fairies are kind.

I am putting together a 1000 piece Josephine Wall puzzle. Colors are now starting to blur, lol. I am really enjoying putting the puzzle together. As each piece goes in I can study the way she paints. Josephine Wall works in acrylics. I love her work so much. She is one of my art inspirations.

I finally broke out my Shinhan watercolor tubes - wow! Haven't blogged this yet, but here's a sneak peek. I only have 6 colors so far...

I will! The post is scheduled for April, actually - a lot of the things I've been working on will post while we're traveling next month.

I was a little frightened at the concept of tube watercolors at all - the intensity of the color is really amazing, sort of like painting with reinkers if you have done that before. Once they're out on the palette and dried again, it's just like using palette watercolors. I am working with only 6 colors, so I am limited a little, but really they're the the colors I typically work with so it's not uncomfortable for me. I tend toward a more muted palette, so I'm glad I was able to choose the colors I did instead of the typical "set" colors that are more primary/bright.

I think there's a package redesign in progress, so some of the online stores like Blick have these on sale.

Dini...I have some questions ..HA! ..What colors did you chose? ..and how do they interface with each other? Do they blend well..? Are the translucent or opaque??

The colors in the picture are the ones I have:

Crimson Lake
Light Red (sort of a Terra Cotta)
Cadmium Yellow Deep
Greenish Yellow (a light olive)
Marine Blue (deep turquoisey)
Vandyke Brown

So I don't have a purple or any 'true' colors - I would like to fill in more colors but it's fun to mix new colors too. Here's a picture of my fancy styrofoam palette so you can see what a mess I made and what new colors I discovered...

The Blick description: Premium pigments sourced from around the world are combined with a highly refined medium to produce this superior professional quality watercolor. ShinHan features clear color tones, exceptional brightness and transparency, and superior light stability. These paints may be used with either transparent or opaque watercolor techniques. Colors remain true when intermixing, thus they are widely used in graphic and architectural illustrations as well as fine art.

Besides typing this message right now I am watercoloring. I am making an Easter card. I am using my Cricut, chalks & watercolors.

The white textured cardstock from WalMart takes watercolors really well. You can get a tablet of it for only $5. I was pleasantly surprised. It's the ColorBox cardstock.

I am in awe.

I took my pencils away when hubby went to hospital in the city (I added some more to my collection while I was there :grin and coloured some digi images to use later. Other than that, too busy, but every small thing is good.

Well, first you get out your paints while watching a "gossip Girl" marathon, wet the paper, splash on watercolor, spray on stencils, wet to wash some of it aay, wish you stopped before you did that, add more stenciling....

Lindsay I can't wait to watch your new video. I love your videos. I am still laughing it's thirty minutes long. Your blog post cracked me up. I am going to watch it later today.

Dini- Beautiful card!

I found a great tutorial for water colors and stencils. I have used stencils for years with watercolors. One of my favorite techniques. Here's the link to the tutorial: Grow Creative: Stenciled Watercolors Tutorial

She also has several watercoloring techniques on her blog. She used her hand to hold down the stencils as she painted. I have always used stencil tape.

I got the link from Craft Gossip. Some of you may have seen this tutorial already.

Dini, I left a comment on your blog. Your card is absolutely stunning!!! It makes me smile from ear to ear, but then I happen to love butterflies and keep buying so many butterfly stamps!! I just love what you did with it and the mix of colors, hard to take your eyes off of it. And the quote inside is perfect for it; just outstanding!!

Lindsay- I watched your video today. You did such a great job. I learned a lot. I have been watercoloring for a long time. You know how it is get into old habits and forget some of the basics.

Everyone if you haven't seen Lindsay's video try to carve some time out this week to watch it. I highly recommend it. Plus, Lindsay always does something funny in her videos.

Default SU watercolor crayons

I have invested a lot into my SU watercolor crayons and have almost never used them. Can you give me a jump start with ideas for using and tips on when to use them? I hate to see them just sitting there.

There are a few ways to use Watercolor crayons. I would suggest using watercolor paper. 1.You can color right onto the stamp, stamp the image and then spritz with water.
2.You can spritz the paper first, then color on the stamp and stamp.
3.You can color on the stamp, spritz the stamp and then stamp.
4. You can color backgrounds, then spritz with water.
5. You can color onto the watercolor paper and using a damp brush, move the color around. Think green for the tree top. Think blue for the sky.

I hope this gets you started. Have fun with it. Craft with a child. They will show you what to do with out restrictions. LOL

They are great to use on colored paper too as they are opaque instead of transparent. I will color with them then use a firm nylon brush to move them around and use the brush to pull out details. They work well over a watercolor underpainting too. If you feel the need to shapen them do so over a small paletter with individual wells, sharpen the filings into a well and spritz with water to make a pan of color and you can use that to paint with later

Lindsay posted on her site to use complimentary colors next to each other to POP the colors. This may help make them richer.

I have CAran D'ache brand watercolor crayons, I got them a long time before SU's came out. Here are some examples:

on the ginko image I dipped the crayons in water and colored the rubber, spritzed with water and stamped:

Here I printed one of my digistamps on blue patterned paper then colored directly with WC crayons:

Here I colored the crayons in loosely and used a wet brush to push the paint around in the detail areas:

I just learned a new water color technique that I thought everyone would want to know about. I have not had time to try this myself but it sounds like a great trick that I'll be using a lot.

If you want to lift/remove or lighten color, use a Mr Clean Magic Erase to do so. One lady even wrote to the company for a product listing to make sure it was archival safe and the company said it should be fine because it is a cellulose plant based product, aka all natural. Just be sure you are using the original one that does not have any cleaners added to it.

Do you wet the Mr Clean Magic Erase first?
