WOW!!! After looking some more...now this may not be 'desktop' storage, but check out this baby for storing embellishments!! I love storage that is behind closed doors:
I stamp on my dad's old bench and across the whole back it has a tool well.
I bought 2 white plastic, shallow 3 drawer cabinets and put one at each end over the tool well, with a board painted white across the top, like a bridge.
On this I have 2 carousels (for paintbrushes and scissors) found at rummage sales for $1.00 each. Under it I store other tools in tissue boxes outfitted with tp rolls glued inside. One has all markers, one crafts knives, short rulers etc. Everything is in it's place, if I have to spend half my life looking for things, I'd never have time to stamp!
I used to have the Pampered Chef Turnabout, but soon grew out of it. I've looked at the Making Memories Spinner, as well as other brands of organizational tools, and while they are all indeed very nice, none of them will hold everything that I want it to hold.
I decided on getting this since I was able to find it at my local Staples. It looks like it will hold allot and I will see how much I can fit in it. I just hope I can make it fit on my desk where I want it to fit.
I can't show you but I got an artist carousel (years ago) in the art dept. at Mike's. It was in a box. I liked it much better than the PC because there's had too many deep sections. This artist one has flat areas around the bottom...........great for embossing jars, single stamp, glitter, etc., then holes for paint brushes but they are also great for pens, small scissors, long tweezers, etc. Then the top has a circle with an X that leaves 4 sections. I put my scissors, rubber trimmers, rulers, etc. in there. I LOVE IT! I used to take it to workshops with me when I was a SU demonstrator.
I finally got to g get the MM Storage I LOVE it I got to get rid of 3 containers on my table.. IT IS THE GREATEST.. Thanks very much I wish the drawers were a little bigger. I got mine at Hobby Lobby with a coupon..

I got this and really like it but decided after a while that it was just too bulky and stuck out too far. It was taking up space I liked for projects so when I made a new stamp pad holder out of foam core, I designed an organizer with leftover foam core. I have a huge quirk about having the right size container to hold my scissors upright so I am not digging for them. Here it is, on the right of the picture:
As promised, I finally got around to taking photos of my SpinWorx organizer. I'm sorry that it took me so long - life happened, and then I just completely forgot! Anyway, here's a couple pictures, but there's more on my blog (link in siggie). Hope this works:
Any questions, just PM or email me. Hope it helps!
EDIT TO ADD: I'm sorry the pics are so big! Anyone know how to make them thumbnails? So sorry about that! Anyway, the way you see the tools in the organizer, is *exactly* the way they are in real life - no posing them, no digging around for anyting, except items that are underneath that I hardly use (extra Dymo label tapes, pliers, etc.). There are several multi-sized compartments that hold all the different sized/shaped tools quite effectively. I think the fact that I have several items in each compartment helps them all to stand up, making them easy to grab.
I think the only thing different about this photo and my list above is that I took out the hand-held punches and replaced them with a Crop-A-Dile. The CAD is not in the photos because my kids used it last weekend and I forgot to get it back before taking the photos! LOL But it fits (handle down) between the Dymo and the crimper.
I just recently bought the Pampered Chef tool turnabout. I love it! It holds all of the things that I use on a regular basis when I am making cards. I decided to buy mine because my friend and Stampin' Up demo has one & she loves hers!

It may not be "ultimate", but this definitely gave me a solution to store my double ended markers and gel pens horizontally! I use it along with a few drawer thingys to handle my embellishments and small tools/adhesive.
