I'm new to all this but have been reading on here for a few months now, so wanting to start water coloring with pencils, I went out and bought a nice large set of Prisma colored pencils. I got my water and brush out but the colors did not blend. Did I make a mistake and buy the wrong pencils? Are there special ones for watercoloring and I spent all that money on regular pencils? Boy do I feel dumb! Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes, there are 2 different kinds. It sounds like you got the Prismacolor Premier Pencils and NOT the watercolor pencils. HOWEVER, the one's you have can be blended with Oderless Mineral Spirits (can be found in the art department or in the paint dept. at Walmart.) If you do a search for Gamsol or Magic Pencils you'll find oodles of threads as well as Thousands of samples. HTH! I actually prefer this technique to the watercolor pencils, but they are 2 different looks.
I love Prismacolor pencils. You can achieve beautiful shading and blending techniques with and without gamsol. Gamsol makes it more like watercolor, but the quality of the pencils makes them so nice without as well. I like using the pencils because they are cheaper then markers, especially if I forget to put the top back on a marker.
I hope this turns out to be a happy mistake for you!

Wow! Thanks for all the help. I do love the pencils, and will be happy to use them even if they didn't work for watercoloring, but knowing they can work if I get Gamsol makes me feel much better.
Glad that we could help. I LOVE my pencils. I even got a bigger set because I loved them so much. I'm just glad my mom gave me a gift card to get them with! lol
Nope, baby oil works great & leaves no residue. Also paper type is important. Don't think this works on watercolor paper...I get good results with Georgia Pacific white cardstock from Walmart.

That's good to know but just wondering, does it work with SU WW cardstock? What is the key feature of the paper I'm looking for... very smoothe like WW, or porous like watercolor paper, or what? All this is great info but I'm on a HUGE learning curve right now!!!! Thanks again everyone!
