I watched the tut on how to make your own flower soft, and ran out to get the styrofoam. When you rub it together, it sometimes comes off in big chunks. They don't really break down too good. Has anyone tried to put it in a blender? I was thinking of getting out my stick blender or putting it in the coffee mill. What do you think?
I did this and it worked fine. Then someone told me not to breath any of the particles and there are a lot floating around, sooooooo in the future, I will just buy it.
Too much trouble for me!! I'm frugal...but some things just aren't worth the time and trouble!! For me, flower soft is one of them. Hope you find out how to do it though.
I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole...I would have that mess everywhere! I learned my lesson by attempting homemade Stickles. Some things are just worth the money and time to buy for me. Somehow I can make the hugest ginormous mess ever!
What a great idea to put it in the bag. That would really take care of the dust problem. I colored it by adding a few drops of alcohol and reinkers, but I think on the video, just reinkers were used.
I thought it was a great idea when I watched the video, but I had already purchased a bunch of Flower Soft. A little goes such a long way, I doubt I'll ever need to replace it, so for me it was worth the cost. Now I have more time for stamping, and it sounds like I avoided a huge mess-
I tried it with two styrofoam balls and it worked just fine. There was very little mess, and the balls broke down very nicely. I did it over a paper plate that had a rather high rim around it, and that kept 99% of it contained. I used my Su reinker to color it, and I added a bit of glitter to give it some glitz. I then spooned it into small plastic bags for storage. Maybe there are different grades of styrofoam?!!! I had no problem with it and would do it again. I got quite a bit of "flowersoft" for $2.00 worth of styrofoam.
I think rubbing it togther is your best bet...what ever you do don't use appliances that yo may end up reusing later one..you never know when you'll end up ingesting some of the particles and then what..? it's one of those don't's just because you don't know...I giggled at the coffee mill inquiry...I thought you were being funny than I read the rest of the thread...I can't believe people actually tried the blender! That must've been messy to say the least

I don't think the foam balls they are using for this is real styrofoam. They are a foam of some type - the same as the green floral arranging foam balls. I don't think styrofoam would break down like this foam does. I've looked for the right type of foam, but haven't been able to find white - only the green stuff in the dried floral dept.
It is realy styrofoam. At my Michael's and Hobby Lobby they have all the styrofoam stuff against the back wall in the crafting areas. They have tiny little balls, and huge big ones. Also cones and rings. These are the rougher type styrofoam, not the smooth type that they make styrofoam cups and ice chests out of.
You may want to check the areas by where the models are at. My kids use the styrofoam balls for school projects (solar systems, cell anatomy, etc.).
wow, an enabler that is inexpensive. If you're worried about breathing in the particles,
use a large ziplock and rub the styrofoam together on the open side of the bag.
I say, 3 cheers to paulette for bringing it to our attention
