Default Cuttlebug - too much pressure?

I just opened my brand new bug and had to try it out right away! Using the embossing folders, it seems there may be a little too much pressure on the paper as the impressions are crisp but the paper somewhat distressed, like it came close to tearing. Is this normal?

Thanks, experts!

I have had my Bug for a while, and I must say, I think it has loosened up a bit on the pressure.

But, it still does what you talk about occasionally, and the paper is almost cut through in places. It seems to depend on which embossing folder I am using, and the paper itself makes a difference in how it embosses.

Some of the thinner paper seems to be the worst, which you would not think would be the case if pressure was the issue. I use all kinds of paper in my cardmaking, from lots of different manufacturers.

I'm no expert, but I think there are two possibilities: #1 - some cardstocks are rather stiff and "unflexible". Sometimes I like that "distressed" look, sometimes I don't. Try different weights and brands of cardstock and see what handles the pressure best. Also, try very lightly spritzing your heavier cardstock with water before embossing. This can soften up the paper fibers enough to bend with the pressure more freely. #2 - My Cuttlebug did "loosen up" a bit after I used it awhile, especially after using cutting dies. I've read that others have experienced this, too. It hasn't affected the quality of cuts or embossing, so it's nothing to worry about. In fact, it may help your situation.

Enjoy your little bug! I love mine!

I tried it with SU cardstock, white and colors. It was definitely worse with the white.
