Default Which Cutting Machine

Well, I love my old school Cricut and it does what I want and I used to be able to used sure cuts alot on it too but I crashed my computer and lost my program. Now I am looking to get a new cutting machine, not a new cricut as I can still use mine for all the cartridges, so I can use all the cutting files offered.

Any tips anyone?

You can put scal 1 & 2 on new computers Jenny. If you go to download support at craftedge.com you just type in your old serial number and email address and they'll send a link.

If I were buying another cutter I'd be tempted by the cougar or if funds were tight I'd probably go for the sissix eclips and use it with scal.

The Silhouette SD works with SCAL. I love my Silhouette, I don't have SCAL though because I feel like the Silhouette Studio program does everything I need except convert SVG's and I use Inkscape for that. But I know a lot of people use it with Silhouette and love it.

I'm with Heather- the Silhouette rules!lol. There is a new version out any day called the Cameo, so you will find the slightly older version, either the original, or the SD will get REALLY cheap- might be worth watching for.

I sold my Silhouette and purchased the Gazelle. I absolutely love it and it cuts everything I want...plus...I can cut my own designs...no buying cartridges!

The Gazelle is a digital cutter and cuts digital cutting files just like the Cricut, the Silhouette etc...You can see some of the images on the Bosskut website here.

There is a group on Facebook called "Boycott Provo Craft"...and while I am NOT AT ALL saying you feel that way, they have a GREAT resource in the discussion section that shows a comparison of MANY cutters. I plan to use it when I need to replace mine.

When you buy your new cutter you can upgrade to SCAL 3 for free. I know you crashed your computer but CraftEdge still has your registration codes on file. That is all they need. You won't have to buy new software.

I love my BossKut Gazelle. I had a few glitches with her recently. That was due to a cat and user error. After I fixed that my Gazelle runs like a dream. My poor Cricut is getting ignored lately. I still use it a lot.

The Gazelle will Print & Cut like the Silhouette. The new machines are out with a three point registration system like the Silhouette. This give you a chance to Print & Cut chipboard and heavier items. Of course you would need a printer to handle those items. Current Gazelle owners the details are being finalized so we can upgrade our machines to Print & Cut also. I haven't checked on it in a couple of weeks. The last time I checked the details were being finalized.

I do not own or probably will ever own a Klik n Kut. I did a lot of research on their machines. I have been exposed to them a long time. Klik n Kut makes excellent machines. I know that new Zing is going to be a beauty. I am not interested because I don't need it.

I do love the Robo Machines: Silhouete Cameo, Silhouette SD, Wishblade, Craft Robo. These machines do not cut heavy duty. I have noticed most Cricut users are fine with that. Plus, they love the store too. The store is very nice. I need a heavy duty machine.

I am a long time Cricut user. I have been with Cricut since the beginning. I actually started with a Wishblade. I did everything backwards. I wanted a machine to cut heavier duty.

The Silhouette Cameo will have a different blade holder to cut heavier items. I think it will cut chipboard and maybe acetate. I am not sure about acetate at this moment.

I am a really big computer geek. I enjoy following all the cutter news. It's like new graphic cards and CPU's to me.

Paperthreads (http://www.paperthreads.com/bonus/pa...re_112008.html) is a good site to get comparison information on all the cutters out there. Sandy McCauley (Digital Die Cutting With Sandy McCauley) has a comparison on the KNK machines.
Just remember every cutter takes time to learn, I would download the demo programs and try them out.

I'm a cutter junkie, I started out with the old blue Wishblade - I have KNK Maxx, Pazzles, Cricut create and E2. I try to use them all...but now that I have Make The Cut I find myself using my KNK the most. Make the Cut's PNC is amazingly easy. The cricuts are for when I have friends/kids over; allows them to cut whatever they need.

Good luck!

Are you saying that we won't be able to weld words together with the new Zing?? I have a KnK Element now... had some health and family issues and haven't used it much. Was thinking of upgrading to the Zing because of the program... reason being about learning two different programs....

Er I meant if you know of one in decent condition for sale, please notify me? I maynot be able to afford it at that particular time, but I'd like the chance to at least think I can get one...do not want the roller handled one...hands are too stiff and sore these days.

I don't think anyone got caught in their Sizzix I did hear the Vagabond was awesome though. I am old school - I love my Big Shot and my Big Shot Pro. I totally count the cranking as a workout We just need an hour a day, right?

I never heard that story either about Sizzix and a lawsuit. I thought Sizzix discontinued it because there was too many electronic errors. Sizzix put the release of the Vagabound on hold until they finessed the machine so it wouldn't be troublesome like the electronic BigShot. Essentially they made the Vagabound the next upgrade to the Sizzix electronic Big Shot. I also thought the BS wasn't a big seller due to the economy. I hope I made sense, lol. I will read this post tomorrow all horrified. I have the flu and asthma, so apologies early.

Silhouette has just started sending out the new Cameo. It is 12x12 cutter.

Ladies, do you HAVE to have a die-cutting machine to make die cuts? Am I correct in thinking they're like hard-framed cookie cutters? Can someone without any machine use the die cuts by just putting them on CS and pressing really hard?

That would be great if we could. I love that idea. You need the die cutter. The construction of the dies were not made to be pushed down like that. Each of the manual cutters has between 3,000-8,000 pounds per pressure to press down on those dies. A normal human would not be able to do that I hope that made sense. I am still sick with asthma and flu. If I was confusing just let me know.

I am editing this to say you can hand emboss your embossing folders. You can skip the machine. You can use a rolling pin to do this. You dampen the cardstock first, insert the cardstock in the folder, then use a rolling pin to "roll over" it. There are a couple of tutorials on the net with step by step instructions. The embossing is not as deep. It does work. You need strong arms. My DH did the rolling pin trick his cardstock looked as good as a Cuttlebug example. When I did it barely made an impression in the cardstock.

Yup same here I love my Eclips machine it cuts like a dream. No complicated workings out like for a lot of the other die cutting machines.

If you've been used to the Cricut then the Eclips works very similarly and IMO give a MUCH cleaner cut than the Cricut.

Wow! ouizee that was some plug you just gave for a machine that you haven't even bought yet they should have you on commission if you don't
already work for them lol. Personally I'd be wary of someone upselling a machine so much that they hadn't even bought yet.....only 11 posts and the majority of themn about one product ....but hey, that's just me.

I researched like crazy when I was interested in purchasing another digital cutter. I did not even think about the Cricut as I am not a huge fan of cartridges.

I originally purchased the Silhouette and it barely even cut card stock for me. I went through all the tutorials and went the support route but, it still barely cut through. I was not impressed as I was trying to cut out pieces for the wedding invitations I was doing for a friend. I ended up hand cutting all the pieces the rest of the way through...not impressed! I sold the Silhouette and went back to the drawing board.

I was interested in the E-craft machine and as it was being demo'd at CHA that year my LSS offered to test out the machine for me. One of my favorite techniques is "Burnished Velvet" and I needed the cutter to cut a sandwhich of double-sided tape/card stock/double-sided tape. The E-craft would only cut half the sandwich...not acceptable. Plus it comes only with a limited software program and if I wanted to upgrade it was pricey!

I then contacted BossKut and talked to Terri (technical director) and she tried it out for me and it worked! The Gazelle cut my sandwich like butter. It also cuts print and cuts, chipboard, glitter paper, vinyl and all kinds of paper...AND it embosses! I just finished another wedding and it cut about 500 pieces in less than 1 hour (this included time to take pieces off the cutting mats and place fresh sheet on it)....awesome!

I highly recommend this machine to anyone and it is on sale right now for $429.00. I know one can shop around and probably find a cheaper price too.

I just recently got a Pazzles Inspiration, and so far, I love it. To be honest though, I'm new to the world of electronic cutting machines, and it's the first one I've ever even touched.

I don't have SCAL, but as far as I know, the PI is compatible with it.

I was just thinking about the pounds per pressure thingy... do you think the Vagabond (being electric) has more pounds per pressure?? I was wondering because I used one with running a Vintaj blank (jewelry brass) using an embossing folder.. (which work wonderfully) at a class... I tried my Big shot doing it at home, which work really well also, and was happy with the results. I was wondering about the cutting abilities, if the Vagabond would be better...

Thanks,
Faith

What is the AVERY program...is it a graphic program like Adobe Illustrator? What file type do you save your designs in. A lot of the cutter softwares will import svg, ai, eps, etc. for print and cut. Download MakeTheCut (it works with several cutters) and try it out. I would contact Michelle @ paperthreads...I believe she uses the KNK Maxx to make confetti. I have several cutters and I solely do print & cut on my KNK (it has a laser light for alignement;my Pazzles doesn't) with MTC. I recommend looking at cutters with a laser light or optical light.

I just looked up the Vagabound. It has 3,000 pounds per pressure. I read awhile back the Sizzix Big Shot/Kick Manual has 5,000 pounds per pressure. Cuttlebug has 3,000 and the Wizard has 7.000.

I have made Avery templates but I have never been able to import Avery files with any of the machines that I owned. I did take a peek for you at some of the higher end die cutters that are not "scrapbook" related. I didn't really find much. Some of the T-shirt vinyl forums might have some help since several of them use different programs that do import label software. I tried to dig deeper but I am having problems with my Internet.

I do know that Klik n' Kut has a lot of knowledge on professional cutters and software even if it's not one of their machines because they do this on a corporate level with several entertainment & design companies. I would drop them an e-mail. They have been around for years and are a good resource. I am recommending them not because of the hoopla over the Zing but because they are a company I thought could help you with your specific cutter need due to their cutting resume.

I hope that helps.

YES -- THIS is a BIG help. Though its the week-end I am going to try and contact KNK today... also they are in Florida as I am currently, so I am hoping if it works out... I can get one of theirs sooner for delivery. I also read on the MTC (software?) that they take JPEG or PDF files. I am wondering if I can somehow (again) try to convert the Avery files into one of these formats and THEN into MTC and go from there. Oh wish I knew much more in the beginning before creating! Hmmm... Thanks again, greatly. Oh! THe note above about pressure? are you talking about blade cut?? pressure?? and what is the "Wizard"... (is it another machine? and by whom?)

Oh and of all the programs I've used for tracing I find the MTC the easiest to use. As for converting - can you print to PDF (instead of a printer)

I feel terrible. I think I might have confused everyone reading my post. Please forgive me. I have been really sick this week.

Manual die cut machines like the Sizzix Big Shot, Cuttlebug & Wizard are between 3000-7000 pounds per pressure. You need to use steel rule dies with those machines. They do not work on the computer. Spellbinder's makes the Wizard

Silhouette, Gazelle, KNK, Black Cat are digital die cutters. Those do work on your computer. Silhouette cuts at around 250-290 grams per pressure. Gazelle around 500, Black Cat has two machines the Lynx (500) & Cougar (800) and the KNK have various cutting pressures from 500-1000 but this depends on the machine you buy.

Yes, you can convert your Avery files to PDF or JPG. I would go the PDF route. Try not to convert them to SVG. The reason why I would not do this is because you will be degrading the image. PDF always converts at the regular format so no degrading.

This is a quick tutorial on how to convert an image into PDF. This will work for Avery files.

Download a PDF printer. CutePDF is very popular with most die cutter users. I love doPDF. Both programs are freeware and safe programs. Both programs have high ratings from review and computer sites.

Install your PDF printer.

Open your Avery file.

Select Print- Choose your PDF printer- Set everything up the way you want it just like you were regular printing and then hit print. You will get a dialogue box asking where you want the file. Choose where you want the file and hit OK. Now you have a perfect copy of your file.

Now, you can open your file in MTC by choosing the PDF button on the toolbar. Hopefully, it will be in the exact proportions the way it was originally created.

Why I say hopefully because there could be computer communication errors along the way. My first hobby is geeking. Also known as I study computers more than I should.

Sometimes when you convert a file you will get data loss. Computer have gotten better at this over the years. Andy (MTC) is very good at coding. Sometimes converting a raster format into PDF you can get some data loss or your memory will choke at opening the file. Vector files should not have this problem. Avery tends to be more of a raster program. I don't think you should have any problems. I just wanted to give you a small heads up.

I have the Gazelle, and I love it!

I've created a Holiday Lantern to be cut out using your die cutting machine. I used Funtime III software and my Gazelle to cut out this product.

Here is a picture of it.

You can view my youtube video to see how it is put together.

Please let me know what you think : )

from reviews I've read on Evolution, it seems to be the machine sent from heaven. Thanks for your reply and hope I get some more as I'm getting itchy to get one. I have Cut n Boss and haven't tried it yet.

Default evolution advanced die cutting machine

Can anyone else reply to this note? What do you like, don't like, any other comments? It is difficult to buy something you have never touched or worked with. I have one in my basket, but would really like some more feed back. Thanks ahead of time.
