I would get the markers. I have had the pencils and recently sold them and got a pack of a cheaper kind of pencil, it's still artist, just not as pricey.
I just prefer coloring with the markers. I think it's personal though.

Its definetly personal...cause I would choose the prismas....the markers are not as easy as they look to master!!! With the prismas and gamsol...I think its alot easier to get the look you are looking for....I can watercolor and do the prismas...but these markers are kickin' my butt!!! Just my opinion....some thoings come easier for some people, I guess.....
I would definitely choose the Prisma pencils over the Markers. Seems I get way better effects from the pencils with the markers... it just looks bad for me??? That just my 2 cents. Good Luck!
I thought olong and hard on this one and in the end decided to stay with prismas and watercolor pencils! They're SO much cheaper and much easier to master, those markers were just too much of an investment for me becuase when I buy something, I want them ALL,not just a few and there is no way I could afford all the markers! I love the look of prismas and gamsol or watercoloring though, it keeps me happy

I would say pencils. You can use gamsol or baby oil with them to create such a pretty blend. The markers are hard to get the hang of, takes lots of practice with them and even some.
I've had my pencils for quite awhile. Monday of this week I received my 1st two shipments of the Copic Markers and I just love them. Even tho they are a little pricey, there are marker clubs to join and get a few at a time. The markers are absolutely GRR rrreat!
I took the plunge last night and bought the prisma pencils after checking out chickers089's tutorial in a different thread. I love how she used the markers with the pencils. It gives you the best of both worlds IMO and is pretty easy to learn (I got it down in one night)
I'm even using my cheapo Marvy's and my SU stampin writes!!
BUT--nothing beats those prismas(except other artist quality pencils). I tried it with my cheap RoseArt's and they're horrible. They scratch the paper.
I have both the prismacolor pencils, and the copic Ciao markers. If I could only have one, it would be the pencils. I love the new markers, but am still learning. My pencils stay handy at all times. I've seen many beautiful cards using both. Eileen

I agree with someone above...both if possible. Two different "mediums" and two totally different looks, IMO. I started with the pencils (didn't know about the Copics at the time) and I love the look but do find that I use them less and less...not enough to sell them however! Start with one...and think about the other down the line!
I love both for different reasons, but if I had to choose one, then I would pick Prismas. They are versatile; you can use them dry or with Gamsol, for small detailed coloring or for creating backgrounds. Plus, you get a lot of colors and color options with blending and layering for a reasonable amount of money.
Then, if you discover that you really love coloring and want a different look, you may want to invest in the Copics too. ;)
HTH,
Marcy

That's a hard question. Kind of like asking if you like apples or oranges. Two completely different looks. But I have to agree to posters above. I'd start with the pencils. For the overall look I think they are easier to master and definitely less expensive to start out with. You can get 120 set off the bay for $50 - $60 including postage.

I prefer pencils, and the #1 reason is because I have kids in the house, and no matter how hard I try to hide them they find MY markers and inevitably leave the tops off. I like working with pencils, I like the results and they are much more affordable.

Do you just use the baby oil in the same way you would gamsol? Or is there another trick to it? I'm curioius because that would be some much safer to keep around my kids/cats/people with allergies. Thanks

However, the PURE COLOR SU! pencils are FANTASTIC! I also LOVE the SU! markers, and BLEND away with them! (AND, they are cheaper!) It's a matter of preference...
I'm thinking about taking the plunge for the pencils. I was in Michaels today and couldn't make up my mind on which set to get. I came home & found the SU color match chart on another thread. I think that's the route I will go. I didn't see the mineral spirits though, must not be with the pencils.

The OMS is with the paint, more like in the paint thinner section. I know at one store the brand is Mona Lisa but that may be Hobby Lobby.
If I had to choose between the Prisma pencils and Copics I'd probably go with the pencil. They are easier to use, much cheaper and easier to color in small tiny details with.

You'll get more bang for your buck through ebay. The Mona Lisa is in the same aisle as the sea sponges and such.

I am now ready to try the pencils and I bought a set on Ebay. I got the 48 set and as a bonus it included the 12 set of the verythin ones. I got it for $32.00, please tell me I didn't get ripped off and I am already off to a bad pencilstart.
But since all of you are raving about these and they are more readily available to me then the copics are, I thought it wise to go this route.
On reason you should consider Copic markers is their Green Factor, and I'm not talking shades of Green...;)
Copic Markers are refillable, with replaceable tips. I've had some of my personal markers for over 8 years- how many of you can say the same?
I just refill them or replace the tip if it ever gets worn.
A bottle of refill ink, at full price is $6.95, but it refills a marker 10 TIMES! In the long run, one marker and one refill equals $11, and is 11 markers worth of ink.
WOW. That's cheaper than any other marker out there.
If that's not good enough, then use that bottle of ink just like Tim Holtz uses his alcohol inks. When the bottle is empty, you can recycle it. Talk about good for the environment.
I would definitely go for the Prismacolor pencils. I've used their pencils since I was in High School, but never knew about the gamsol blending technique until I started reading here. Beats burnishing with the burnishing pencil anytime! I recently bought quite a few Copics, and played with them. Although I like them very much, I'm thinking about selling them. To be truthful, I prefer Tombow, or Marvy markers because of the easy watercolor blending you can do with a brush and water. MUCH easier than the Copics. I like the look of the water based markers better, too. I now have sets of the markers and a huge 132 piece pencil set my BF got me for Christmas, so I am set for coloring. I'm still not sure if I'm going to sell my Copics or not....
If you can buy both, go for it, they can be used to color together. Very nice effect too. But if only one, buy the prismas. Cheaper and easier to control. I still can't figure out how to use the blending pencil or gamsol though, so I color without them lol! hth!
