I've just purchased my first set of copic ciao markers (36) and will be taking a few classes at a local shop....so excited!
Without sounding possessive or selfish, is there a "code" in sharing at classes? i.e. do I put my initials on each marker? do I willingly let anyone use them at class? Does anyone have thoughts on this? Thanks for any and all comments!
I don't have any copics yet. But if I did and was going to take them to crops, I would definitely mark mine in some way, because those babies are expensive!!
Also, I would not be inclined to share them for the same reason. But that's just me ;)
I'd check to see what the class requirements are. I took a class at the LSS and all the copics (and other supplies) were provided. Alternatively, if you're told to bring specific colors, you should reasonably expect that everyone will bring their own.
But I'd definitely mark mine if I was taking them with me.
When ever I have gone to any kind of craft class, I have anything I take marked with my initials and a paw print so there is no mistake. I use a sticker for the paw.
Since I would never ask to use someone else's things, I don't lend mine out. I just keep what I bring in my bag so they are not out for others to get any idea.
I don't mean to sound selfish, but craft tools and supplies are expensive and I don't want to take the chance of anything "accidently" happening.
Any class I've ever been to at a craft store has always been either bring your own or purchase while there.
Customers are not required to bring their own markers to any classes that I teach, so I'd check with that LSS to see if you're supposed to bring your own. I have however taught for other stores where customers did bring their own. If they didn't have the colors that were being used, they had the option of ordering them ahead of time or doing without. If you take yours, I would mark them with your initials or something but I never hesitate to share mine. What harm will it do? You can replace tips if something happens, and you can refill it with ink if it runs dry (which it really isn't going to do if you're just sharing with someone during a class.)
Check with the store on whether you need to bring your own markers. I mark mine using a label maker as Sharpie will rub off. Labeling your stuff means it'll come back to you! Not that people intend to not give them back, they just forget and then don't know who it belongs to if it's not labeled.

I teach all of the Copic classes at my LSS and I USED to bring my markers to class but I don't anymore because a bunch of mine have gone "missing." You look these people in face, you laugh with them, help them, then they rip you off!! It's sad but I can't trust strangers with my VERY EXPENSIVE investment..

Tammy--you are waaayyy too nice! I wouldn't even expect the store or teacher to provide but it is nice when they do. I taught Home Ec for 100 years and I know how hard it is to let people use your stuff and they have no respect for it. It was always a good lesson for the students.
Now, those things are e x p e n s i v e and there is no way I would not put a HUGE identifier on each one!
I've only taken one Copic class but the LSS owner suggested I bring some of my Copics to the class. Everyone brought some markers to class - some of the ladies had collections that had to be wheeled in a rolling tote! The teacher did actually provided Copics to use for the techniques she taught.
I put a sparkly sticker on the ones I brought. I would put some kind of identifying mark my pens and I wouldn't be too generous about lending any of them out. They are $$$ so why should someone else add to their collection for free???
When I teach my Copic classes I always invite students to bring their own markers if they wish... but I tell them they need to mark them in some way to identify them. I do have class sets that students can use, but sometimes people like to use their own colors. I've had some people happy to share and some who have opted not to. Whichever makes you most comfortable... just politely let your table-mates know your wishes.
Have fun coloring and learning!

When I took my Copic classes, my LSS (Tammy) provided the Copics to use. I did bring my own also, but basically used the ones there. I honestly believe that at the end of the classes each and every precious marker was still there on the table with the project information. That being said, I had no problem sharing what I had with anyone there--not that anyone needed to since everything was provided. I guess I'm trusting by nature--maybe too trusting! LOL
I'd be checking to see if you need to take them to your class or not. If you still decide to take your own, mark everything!! I've seen some people mark theirs with their initials using a dark copic (that way you can remove them with Hand Sanitizer if you want), some put a band of coloured tape around the middle and others use a label maker to put their name on the marker barrel. In the end it's up to you, but I'd mark everything.
Personally I would and do share things with ppl (although there are some ppl that take advantage of this) BUT copics are a total other thing!!! I dont have them YET but with the investment you have (and I will be) I think they are a keep to yourself (and obviously your good friends) thing. And I wouldnt expect other people to think anything different!
I don't share my Copics. At $5 a marker I am not willing to let someone use them and possibly damage the tip, etc. I am perfectly willing to share most of my stuff... but not my Copics.

Ditto! In my classes, I provide Copics for the class to use, but sometimes they have to share the class markers. They have the option to bring the colors we're using to class, but I definitely recommend that personal markers be identified in some way that can't be removed easily. I share my Copics freely, but I'm used to it...many of the Copics we use in class are from my personal set. Nibs have been ruined, caps have gone missing, and markers have disappeared, but that's all part of it for me. I kind of expect it, and stock up on refills, nibs, and extras of my most used colors.
That being said, if I was a customer and markers were being provided for class use, I would choose not to bring mine. I'm very particular about my Copics and that way if there's damage to them, I know I'm the one who caused it! I also wouldn't be put in a situation where I had to say, "No, I prefer not to share."
Enjoy your Copics and I hope you learn a lot in your class!
I guess I'm stingy. I don't share any of my toys. Its a big investment into some of these tools and I find most of the time, people don't treat things with respect if they didn't pay for it themselves.
Am I the only one that broke into a cold sweat at the thought of sharing my Copics? Anything else I have, help yourself, to but I just couldn't trust someone else with my Copics... *shudders*

I had to giggle over this... I was just like you...
until I started teaching classes...
I quickly learned that I had to get over messy markers, caps on wrong markers, missing caps (a pain) and the one that was the most difficult for me... not having the markers put back in the same order! LOL
Trust me... some days it's tough. But I am lucky enough to have class sets and my own personal set... I'm not so sure I'd be as generous with my own personal set!

I think I get it honestly. I can remember my mother having her pretty Crayolas and I had to make do with the ones that I didn't keep pretty. But if I had a my set and a share set I could share my share set, well I think I could.

This is exactly how I feel too. I would be very uncomfortable having to tell someone that I don't share my Copics, so I would try to NOT put myself in this situation, I guess. Those little babies are just so blasted expensive, and I have not been able (yet) to invest in replacement tips or refills.
I guess, know what you are comfortable with and go with that.Personally, I have a huge investment in my Copics, and just really can't afford to have them messed up/lost, etc---at least not by anyone... but me!
The copics classes that I took had a list of particular marker colors that we were expected to bring with us or buy there. There were also a few markers that we only needed the tiniest bit of so the instructor provided those if you didn't have one.
I was and am more than willing to share my goodies INCLUDING my copics. They really are quite difficult to ruin and being refillable I don't worry about them running out.
I'll share with the person next to me but that's about as far as I'll let my tools go. I mark all my tools with my name in obvious place so I can see it and all pens/copics/markers have my address label on them.

Oh, the order thing...I gave up on that over a year ago...after my first class! But I have to say the hardest thing for me is opening a marker up and seeing a broken chisel nib. Yes, I replace them. But it hurts my heart a little. LOL
I don't have Copics, but in art school we had specialty pencils that cost up to $6 or $7 a piece - and unlike a copic, couldn't be refilled with more lead!
As a whole, us art geeks were pretty picky about our pencils - everyone liked them sharpened in a certain way, we almost always hand-sharpened them with our xacto knives, and always kept them in a certain order (I did from lightest to darkest).
That being said, if we were in class, or sketching as friends, and someone forgot this shade or that shade at home, I'd share mine. Sometimes it was returned not sharpened correctly just the way I like it, a few times they broke, stuff like that - but it was just kind of factored in to the art cost and I knew it could happen. It didn't really bother me. I'd just re-sharpen or buy a new one if necessary. But since we were all art geeks, usually we were pretty respectful of each others things, and tried to always let the owner do their own sharpening.
I'm pretty open with my craft stuff and my friends and family know it - pretty much everything I have, they can use, including my paper and adhesive. I just factor that in to my monthly cost and know I'm gonna end up sharing a certain amount and the rest is stuff I will use. But it doesn't bother me because everything I make is for THEM anyway, so it doesn't seem odd to me.
But, they love me and are very nice to my toys It'd be harder if they weren't nice to my toys. I do have every single thing clearly marked though - down to ink pads, pencils, paper packs, etc. That way nothing gets mixed up.
Hang on are grown ups how do ppl loose the caps for the markers?????????? Isnt that a primary school thing??? Sorry just my thoughts.
Well... sometimes my classes get a little crazy! LOL People get excited and they are using three markers at a time and they pull the covers off and they get lost on the table or roll to the floor... it doesn't happen often, but every once-in-a-while I'll have a marker sans a cap. (It usually gets found in the store when they clean and they send it back to me.)

I have taken two or three Copic classes and have never needed to bring mine. I don't think I would share though...I have seen too many things get ruined on accident. That's just me though!

How on earth can you break a chisel nib? They feel awfully indestructible to me! LOL.

If you are using the Ciao markers, it can happen by snapping the caps on at an angle. Since there is an outer cap and an inner cap with the Ciao style, if the cap goes on at a slight angle, you can slice the nib with the inner cap.
I'm not sure if Shannon is using the Ciao style or not... but that could be a possibility.

definitely mark your markers. I think the people who "steal" are usually people who accidentally grab the wrong markers, not intentional. I sorted through my sets the other day and found I had a bunch of markers labeled from another instructor. It makes me feel bad, but it happens.
Don't feel obliged to share if you don't want to, or maybe only share with your friends sitting next to you. I'd worry if a total stranger borrowed from my personal set if I were an attendee. As an instructor, you need to expect a few to wander. However, if you announce an the end of class and remind people to carefully check their markers you are more likely to have your little friends wander off.
Each of my Copic markers has my address label on it (I have the original markers). The instructor always provided markers for classes I've taken. Even though I did bring my own markers to class, I never shared them.
Nope! I still break into a cold sweat when I read this. I'm glad there are crafters that are able to share theirs to make up a little for my inability.

I did that to one! Way back when I first got them. That's the only nib I've ever replaced.

I am always surprised how easily some people who don't know you can ask if they can borrow your supplies. Things like punches I don't mind - but things like markers I find hard to lend as they can be easily misused. My problem is that I have never learned how to say no without feeling that I am being mean. So if I say yes, then I worry they might be ruined and if I say no, then I feel horrible.

Yep...one of my stores only carries Ciaos and the Super Pales, so we're using my Ciaos (as I slowly replace my personal set with Sketch )

Intriguing! I'll have to make sure I'm careful with my ciaos!
As the youngest of six we were taught the meaning of sharing.....however in adulthood I lost that lesson;) well only when it comes to things like Copics, and my precious craft things, oh and my make up .....I know I am bad and I know I should be nicer....but I'm not
I'm with you RiverIris... My pens are not for sharing... I'm not a selfish person - happy to share all other tools and bits that I have... just not my pens... {OCD maybe, but if there is one missing - I can't rest till that little baby is found!!! ;)}
