I have gotten HOPELESSLY addicted to quilling (thanks to a previous thread right here!) but am finding the glue I"m using, while strong, dries kind of glossy. Does anybody have a recommendation for a glue that dries matte?? The piece I made has quite a few "shiny" spots on it!
Thanks!
Bubink....I use Elmers glue, but the PVA does just the same also. The trick is to use the tinest of drops of glue. I also use a toothpick as Scrapjanny says. Makes it easier to apply just exactly where the glue is needed. Much neater also.
I recently got a bottle of glue from QuillingSuperStore.com and it works fine. I put a drop on paper and then use a tooth pick for a tiny bit. I love to quill but it takes longer to make cards.
I use Elmers glue, put a puddle on wax paper and use a tooth pick to apply. Very cheap and at school starting time you can get it really cheap. I have made tons of cards and have sent them thru the mail and they never came apart!
I have tried the Magi scraps glue and price to price the Elmers is cheaper!
I use Aleene's Tacky and as the other's only use a little bit. I learned the hard way when I took a pic and saw all the glue! lol. I haven't been on this forum but a short time, good to see other quillers! I must search for that "other thread" about quilling!
Do these all dry matte?? I saw on a website that Aleene's Tacky Glue is about the best with Aleene's Clear Tacky being the next best.
And what's PVA glue and where do I find it??
PVA glue is an acid-free glue that many crafters use for book-binding projects. You can usually find it in the art supplies aisle or the adhesives aisle in craft stores. Art supply stores also carry it. You can also try Googling it. Good luck in your search for a glue that works for you. I know it can be frustrating.
Bubink.....When you're using the glue for quilling, you are using such a tiny amount that once it dries, it is not seen.
Apply it with a toothpick. You don't have to worry about matte or clear. Either will all disappear once it's dry. You aren't using enough to even notice.
As a previous poster stated, I also just put a blob of Elmers on a piece of wax paper and pick it up with a toothpick.
PVA glue is more expensive, but it you already have it for use with other projects, go ahead and use it. It works the same as Elmers.
I had been using Elmer's with good results but then realized the tube of glue that came with Martha Stewart's glitter was a nice small size to tuck in my craft case so was using that. I didn't have any problem with it until I started to do the "eccentric" shapes, the ones that you pull the circles to one side and glue them in place. That's where the shine became an issue so was looking for something for that application.
On a side note, found a website that said to use a contact case for your glue. Stays fresh and then you just cover it up when you're not using it. For $1.57 at Walmart, figured I'd try that.
Thanks for that tip on the contact case! When I glue the eccentric shapes I just glue it and then turn it over and use the other side of the shape as the "show" side and never see the glue. Unfortunately if I am not paying attention I will get one petal of the flower upside down and glue side showing, then I will just layer the edge of another flower's petal over it so it doesn't show.
Perfect Paper Adhesive by US Artquest comes in matte and glossy. Found it at Michaels, and with 40% coupon, was about $5.00 for an 8.5 oz bottle. It works great for so many applications.

My mother has been quilling for over 20 years. She only uses Aleene's Tacky Glue and always applied it using a toothpick. Best of luck with your quilling!!
