Default watercolors and embossing

I am very intrigued by the stamping up aqua pen, and embossing method like this Patty's Stamping Spot: Watercoloring ideas
.I have seen several video's on this while using the aqua pen and ink refills but I am wondering if this will only work with the ink? Or can I use the watercolor crayons? Would I still get the same effect?

The aqua pens work great with the retired watercolor crayons and also watercolor pencils! My personal favorite is using them with dye ink refills. ;)

I love using the watercolor crayons with the aqua pen. However, I don't color first. I take the color directly from the crayons.
