trying to use my scallop scissors, instead of buying the punch.
For those of you who perfer to use the scissors. How long did it take you to go around an cut out circle and make it look good. I tried today and no way does it look good. It's not as easy as it looks.
I thought if I tried it enough times maybe with the scissors I wouldn't have to break down and get the scallop punch. because I know before long SU will eventually come out with the oval scallop punch. So I figure if I play with the scissors long enough I might have to mastered beore long.
So for those of you who are using the scissors how long did it take you to get it right and perfect. So I'll know what to expect. Or is there an easier way that I need to know about. Any little tips that might make this easier.

OK, your post exactly reflects my recent problem! I want a scallop punch. But I won't be getting that for at least a couple months so this is what I have been doing. Using either the big circle punch or coluzzle, start with a circle. Slowly go around it but don't be afraid. I used the first one I tried, and did 3 more for a series of cards. I did an ova, too toeday. I will post a couple of them but you can check out my gallery-the first 4 or 5 have my version of scallops on them.
those came out really nice and I did view them already when I looked in the gallery under scallop scissors. I guess like I said if I try it enough times I can perfect it like anything else. I will keep trying.
I just didn't know if there were any little tricks out there that someone may have come across to make it easier for them to get it just right. Or little things not to do.
I myself was thinking about making 2 circles, One just the next size up from the size I want. Then using that as my guide and cut going around the outside of the bigger circle getting the edges of the circle I want. Then I can hopefully make it more round rather Than cut into the circle so much. sOTHAT'S WHAT I'LL TRY NEXT AND SEE IF THAT WORKS FOR ME.

I used my Provocraft scissors to do these ATC's. Personally, I found that the scissors have to be very sharp to make the turns. And they dull very quickly. In between every card, I would cut through some folded aluminum foil to sharpen my scissors. That was the only way it worked for me.
Making an outline of an "inner circle" on the wrong side of your paper will help.
Then when you cut, line up your cutline with the inner line. Also, remember to turn the paper, not the scissors when you are cutting. I found I could only do about 4 or so scallop bumps before stopping, lining the scissors up with the last cut and cutting again.
Before I attempted cutting scallops I had lots of practice just cutting paper shapes in general, because I had no die cut system. I used plastic templates to trace and cut all kinds of things, labels, tags, etc.
Just keep at it. You will get better and better. And remember, cards that we make are "handcrafted" not machine-made. A little imperfection here and there is charming!

Lisa, here is a scallop circle I cut with scissors quite a while back. If you look close, you can see it's not perfect, but I think it turned out pretty good.
NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN ABOUT USING THE CORNER ROUNDER. This will help to get rounded corners for a square piece of paper.
But I don't see how this will help me with making a full circle using scallop scissors.

I have one of these. I'll be trying this today also. But will just take a little longer.

Yup, I penciled my oval (or you could do circle) on the backside of the paper and cut on the line to do what I did in this card. It wasn't perfect but it worked okay.
I tried again today with my scissors, I this makes about 4 times trying to cut out a circle with them. And the more you use them the better you will get at it. Mine came out so much better only after a few times. It sure beats spending $13.95 on 1 punch or even 2 depending on what size you need and shape. You can save a lot by just buying the scissors. The scissors at Michael's is only $2.00 you can't beat that.

I took the guide off my corner punch and it worked real well. If my circle would have been just a tab bigger it would have come out perfect. I used a Ball jar lid to cut out my circle. I need to practice, but I thought it was real good for my first try. Thanks for the tutorial.

This looks great. I was so excited after seeing this technique that I went home and cut out a ton of circles. Sadly, my SU corner rounder is the old style and doesn't have a guide. When I undid the four screws that hold it together, the whole thing fell apart! (No worries, I was able to piece it back together and get it working again.) I made a trip to Joanns today to get a newer version, luckily at 30% off. Can't wait to play. . .
I also don't want to spend the money on the punches, and have a hard time with the scissors, but am now encouraged to retry them after seeing all the great examples you have all posted here. I love the scallops but really don't want to invest all that money on punches and shipping!
I have to just say that I am impressed with the results you guys are having. I can't even cut a "regular" circle. I can trace a perfect circle but I sure can't cut it out to look good.

Beate thanks so much that looks so much easier. I'll save this and try it later.

love how this card turned out, and the added stitching on the scallop edge, thanks for sharing, so many hints shared on this, only on SCS, are we lucky or what Carolyn

I held up my oval to the giga oval (I got as RAK). My oval is a little bigger, BUT the scallops are the same size, SO no one will now that you didn't spend the big buck *wink, wink*
I just broke down and bought the punch. With 7 kids, anything that saves me time and lets me stamp is worth the $$$. LOL I know.....that probably didn't help anyone. ;)

Beate, I absolutely love your tutorial. I have several scallop punches, but the deal is, unless I have the exact size punch, it doesn't do me any good. Using your tutorial will place my scallop exactly where I want. Now to go upstairs and practice!
Just last night I tried to use my oval scissors. The results were not pretty. Again. I even marked and inner circle for a guide. I swear I used a ruler! If used the coluzzle for the oval, why didn't I used the coluzzle for the inner? Duh.
Back to the results. They looked like child's play! Maybe worse. LOL. I decided to just cut out my image and forget the oval. I left the scissors out, fully intending to take them to the thrift store today!
Thanks for the question, suggestions, tutorials, and the Weekly Inkling. I can't imagine my life without you (and the Internet).

Years ago I bought a little pair of scissors that are curved. I think they are manicuring scissors, but they are lifesavers because they are very sharp and already curved, so it makes it so easy to cut scallops or any other tricky cutting you need to do

mine too :( - but I gave up trying to get that darn spring lined up, etc etc. So my next SU order will include a corner rounder
