Stamping on alcohol inks

Hi, my name is Anna and I am new to the forum, but have enjoyed the website for some time now. I have a question -
I have been experimenting with alcohol inks on a glossy card and getting a really nice background, but when I try to stamp on top the ink is so sticky, it doesnt take and pulls off some of the alcohol ink. So far I have tried versafine , stazon, distress, and versamagic. The versamagic chalk one seems to be the only one that can actually stamp the image clearly. Is there any other I could try?

Hi Anna, welcome to Splitcoast!

Glossy cardstock is a slick surface so your dye-based inks (like Distress) are not going to work on there. Alcohol shifts alcohol so the normal go-to ink for a glossy surface (Stazon) is not going to measure up either since it will just lift your background colours.

I would try Brilliance - it's pigment ink and won't interfere with the alcohol and providing you leave it alone for long enough (or gently heat set it) it will dry on pretty much anything.

Make sure your alcohol ink background is thoroughly dry to give you the best chance of getting a clean impression.

I use Ranger archival ink.

When I did Tims chemistry 101 he said as alcohol inks are solvent based you cant use water bases inks or stazon as it is also a solvent based ink and they wont work together the only ink that works is rangers archival ink as it is oil based
dry your background with a heat gun before you stamp

I think that should really say "the only ink in Ranger's product line that will work is Archival". Tim basically works with and promotes Ranger products. Archival is not the only oil-based ink out there (Versafine is oil based) and Brilliance stamps on slick surfaces and dries if you leave it long enough. Both of those inks are made by Tsukineko so I wouldn't expect Tim to mention them in his classes. Doesn't mean they won't work though ;)

Thank you! Thank you for this! One of my pet peeves is how perfectly straight forward product pushing can confuse us. Alcohol ink too is not a Ranger monopoly. Lindy's Stamp Gang, whose products I love, makes Moon Shadow Ink and powders which can be mixed with rubbing alcohol to make beautiful alcohol inks. BASIC PRODUCT INFO

Great comments. I literally found out today (blog-hopping.. ) that Ranger isn't the only alcohol ink in town. I was totally surprised.

It's been awhile since I created this card but I don't remember any problems using the StazOn ink on the alcohol ink background. I do have a tendency to let my stamps sit for a bit before lifting off from the carsstcok so perhaps that was/is the trick.

I don't post a lot. However, I'd like to thank you for sharing so much of your information. There are So many products out there now, that we need to be a little bit like scientists! We need to know the basics of what at least things like the ink we are using consist of in order to do some of these techniques. I always read your posts Angelnorth, and need to visit your blog more than I do. Thanks again!
