Default Soot Technique

I can NOT get the soot technique down. I have ruined several sheets of glossy trying to get the look. Any tips? I am using Yankee Candle and Partylite candles. Should I use cheap candle maybe? I only get small spots of soot and have started numerous pieces on fire!

TIA

I use the el-cheapo tea lite candles that you get like 50 in a bag for $2 at the craft store....never had any problems...

the candles you are using are supposed to be soot-less ... big selling point on the partylite candles...they don't produce soot...

I'm having wonderful luck with the technique, but I don't dare use it at a party! Are any of you doing this in other people's houses? Most of my parties are in a terribly old building that I wouldn't dare light a candle in!!
How about everyone else?

Default soot technique

I am also having trouble with this technique. After I spray my acrylic sealer and let it dry, it seems as if there is "white snow" all over the glossy cardstock. I wasnt sure if I was spraying it too close, so I tryed to spray it 10 inches away (like the can says) and I let it dry overnight. When I picked it up in the morning I was getting smudges from my fingerprints all over the front of the cardstock. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong, or if I am using the wrong sealer. I bought Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating. Is this what I should be using? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

Default Too chicken

I think this looks super cool, but I'm too scared to try it. With my luck I'd burn down my own house! Maybe I should just suck it up and try it.....with a fire extinguisher right beside me.;)

Lisa,
My sealer does leave little speckles too. I guess it's when the spray comes out too thick it shows on the soot. You might want to spray from further away, let the first coat dry and then try again.

You know I messed up a lot if the tutorial has WARNINGS. LOL

Don't use party lite candles. Use the cheapest ones that you can find because they use a cheap wick which makes smoke. I believe that Party Lites wick is made of cotton and burns too clean. I just get mine at the Dollar store.
