I purchased a sheet of 2 inch tiles the other day to make magnets, but was wondering how you remove the glue that holds them together. I cut them apart as close as I could, but didn't know what else to try. Thanks!
I use one of the straight blade razors that are rectangles. I found that if I fold the sheet of tiles where the backs touch that I can cut from two tiles at a time. This is what I used to make ornaments for my children's daycare teachers and for my customers.
To make a finished look I hot glued a ribbon hanger to the back of the tile then glued a cardstock square. This is where I put the hand-stamped and the year/initials.
The tiles I bought I could just pry off of the backing. If not, I would probably use my paper snips to cut as close as possible, then soak them overnight in some warm water to hopefully remove the gluey backing.
I just set the individual tiles (after they had been cut apart) on wet paper towels for an hour or so. Then took a wet paper towel and a trusty thumb and started rubbing the glue off mostly with my thumb and then cleaning off the glue with the paper towel (also to keep the glue moist).
It may work easier if you let the tiles soak longer.
My method works okay if you are just wanting to do a few tiles (3-4). When I cleaned the glue off 8 tiles for end of the year teacher gifts, I ended up with a blister on my thumb. (May want to try a blade to get the glue off after the tile has soaked.)
Hope this helps.
Looking forward to hearing other ways to do this too.

FREEZER????? Sounds great, I've been wondering this too. Usually, I just cut as close as I can with sharp scissors!
Thanks for the idea!

Do the methods (freezing, soaking etc) work for the thick construction glue that is on some of the small tiles? I have some with a thinner glue and parchment type backing and soaking worked for those. But I have been scraping the thick rubbery glue with an exacto knife to get it off. Freezing or soaking would be so much easier and I would love to know if it is worth displacing the contents of my freezer!
