"painting" on tumbled tiles

I hope I'm not pushing the stamping technique envelope with this ?, but here goes.....

I want to make some coasters using tumbled tiles for a fundraiser. I have made many using Staz-On ink. However, for this fund raiser, the image I am using really needs all over coverage of color. Does anyone have any suggestions for "painting" the image?

I have seen lots of tiles that were stamped with Stazon, then colored with Copics, Bics or Sharpies. I did a couple of sets like this a few years ago, but I did find the coloring process very tedious.

I'm going to make some coaster tiles for Christmas gifts this year using this process with pattern/designer paper:

Thanks, Bugga for sharing the tutorial using designer paper. I may try that someday. I am still trying to figure out how to "paint" solid images, which is actually the charity's logo, on the tumbled tile.

Does anyone has any ideas? Thank you!

Oh you are wanting to be able to paint it by hand? What about making a stencil (print it out heap cardstock and cut it out or use an electronic cutter if you have access to one) and then sponge in ink or color with permanent markers.

I haven't tried this but it seems like it might work for an image you don't have a stamp for.

I used my alcohol inks, but then I had to coat the tile and I didn't use the tumbled tile, I used ceramic (cheaper). You could use the Stazon refills to paint with if you have the colours you need...

Thank you for the good ideas! I rolled the dice and tried a couple of things. I went ahead and purchased the tumbled tiles. One design, which was not totally colored in, I drew freehand with Sharpies. The other design, which was all colored in, I purchased an acrylic craft paint and used it. I sealed both with matte waterproof sealer. They really turned out quite well! Hopefully, they will sell and earn some money for the Children's Protection Network!

Hi Bugga! Thanks for the link! The coasters look great. I think I will try some with the dp as well. I have done some in the past with stazon then colored in my image. Never thought about using dp! Can't wait to try it! Thanks again!

I don't know if they mentioned this, but I found that lightly misting the paper with water before attaching it to the tile really makes a difference in how it adheres to the surface.
