Okay...I looked all over for Gamsol and I can't find it. I thought...my first mistake...that Daler-Rowney Low Odour Thinners would be the same thing but I don't think it's working...since I have never done the project with Gamsol..I dont' know if it's working or not....
I colored with the prismas on us white then painted on the thinner with the stump...it muted it somewhat but didn't give me the effect I expected and it left a stain on the cardstock..like a watermark.
Help? Advice? Constructive criticism?
I am having the same problem. I went to Micheals and Hobby Lobby. The Michaels sales guy took me to the classroom to talk to the art instructor and she had never heard of Gamsol, OMS yes, but not Gamsol. The sales guy was sure that the Grumbacher Pre-tested Odorless Thinner was the same thing as mineral spirits. Anyway, I got home and tried it and my picture didn't look like the examples I have seen on here. I can't find it OMS, the sales guy said Home Depot has it. I can only immagine the size I would have to buy at Home Depot.
I don't know if this will help any, but who knows. They don't carry Gamsol at my Hobby/craft store. I use SANSODOR made by Winsor & Newton. It states on the bottle that it is a low odor solvent for oil colors. It also says it contains petrollium distillates. I've also read here on SCS that a brand called TURPENOID works as well. Someone posted earlier about a product made by Mona Lisa.
When I do my coloring I have a small plastic soap dish that I placed a piece of sponge in. I pour the sansodor in the dish and let the sponge soak it up and rest in a small amount of remaining liquid. Just a bit not the whole bottle. I push or lay the stump on top of the sponge and moisten it.
I outline color the object I wish to color, just like when you where a kid and used to go around the lines of the picture. Then I take the moistened stump and use a circular motion to bring the color out to the center. I add color as needed in Layers. I do know if I get too much solvent on the stump it has left a stain at times. I lay it on the sponge and let it absorb. I can see the dark area on the stump where it has absorbed the solvent.
The Hobby Lobby here where I am carries the Sansodor by Winsor & Newton and the Turpenoid. It is sold in the Art Dept. with the artist oil colors, paint thinners/brush cleaners/solvents. The Turpenoid comes in a can I think and the Sansodor comes in a clear glass bottle of smaller size. The main person in the Art Dept had never heard of odorless mineral spirits. Hope this helps.
My local stamp shop sells it in a little bottle (about the size the stampin mist spray comes in) and it has a little sponge tip on it when you unscrew it - this is what you press your stub into to pick up the mineral spirits. The bottle just says mineral spirits on it and my bet is that they buy these little bottles and package the spirits themselves - they're probably making a killing on this!
It is very convenient, though, so I bought it.
GAMSOL IS RATHER ELUSIVE. I DID AN INTERNET SEARCH FOR THE GAMSOL MANUFACTURER AND LOOKED FOR STORES THAT HANDLED GAMSOL PRODUCTS-MOST WERE IN VERY LARGE CITIES-OFTEN BY COLLEGE CAMPUSES (FOR THE ART STUDENTS). I FOUND ONE IN INDIANAPOLIS (6 HOURS AWAY), SO WHEN I WAS VISITING THERE, I BOUGHT SOME. THE AMOUNT I SAVED IN SHIPPING HELPED TOWARD GAS ON A TRIP I WAS MAKING ANYWAY. INKY ANTICS WAS THE VENDOR I FIRST PURCHASED FROM, SHE REBOTTLES AND CHARGES A SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN PRICE PER OUNCE. SHE DID A LOT OF RESEARCH BEFORE RECOMMENDING GAMSOL (COMPARING ODOR, FLAMMABILITY, AND OTHER CRITERIA) SO I HAVE STUCK WITH THIS PRODUCT ON HER WORD.
I didn't have any luck finding Gamsol or 100% odorless mineral spirits at Hobby Lobby. So I went to Dick Blick's art supplies at lunch today. They had heard of Gamsol, but don't carry it in the store. (You could order it from their catalog, but I was too impatient to try this!) The man there seemed very knowledgeable and he highly recommend Turpenoid. He said one advantage of Turpenoid (besides being cheaper) is that it is non-yellowing over time.
Hi
I got my Gamsol from Inky Antics at a stamp show several years ago.
on the bottle it says manufactured by Gamglin Artists Colors Co.
Hope this helps.
Cindy
You need to look in the artist/painting supplies for "100% odorless mineral spirits". I've seen 2 different brands of it at Michael's. I use the Houston Art Mona Lisa brand - it comes in a white rectangular bottle with blue & red writing and Mona Lisa's picture. Michael's also sells the Winsor & Newton brand, which comes in a clear glass rectangular bottle with a white label. Both of these should cost you no more than $4.00 and will do you just fine. The Mona Lisa brand is in an 8 ounce bottle and I think the W&N was smaller - maybe 4 ounces.

Sadly my Michaels didn't have any. I was in the art section and saw the Mona Lisa Products, but not one bottle said 100% mineral spirits. My Michaels had Grumbacher Products... but no mineral spirits listed on any of the ingredients on any of the bottles. :(
the one at Michaels does not say Mineral Spirits on the front of the bottle, hence why i had such a hard time finding it. On the front it says Odorless Paint Thinner and it has the pictutre of Mona Lisa on it. Small rectangular bottle, white. if you look at the ingredients on the back it says 100% mineral spirits. this works great. very easy to work with with the stumps.
I also have the Mona Lisa brand of 100% odorless mineral spirits. It works just fine!
Gamsol is just a brand name of 100% odorless mineral spirits. I also use Crayola colored pencils instead of prisma...works just fine. It is my undersatnding that as long as it is 100% odorless mineral spirits it doesn't matter what brand name it has on it.
I just ordered my gamsol and stumps through Dickblick.com It doesn't take long to get here either... I think it was 3 days!!! I am expecting the stuff TODAY!!!! I will be gone all afternoon so hoping it gets here this morning yet
Dick Blick has it all. We have a local one here in CT. I was able to get my stumps and my Gamsol (they had it right on the shelf). And it works great. I love this technique.
Gamsol is a brand name for 100% odorless mineral spirits, paint thinner. I have brand Thin-X, odorless Paint thinner and on the can in smaller print it states "100% mineral spirits". I have been doing this technique for awhile with this brand and it comes out great, here are a few examples below:
