I enjoy applying dry chalks to the raised sections. I use a brush, eye makeup applicators, and/or a round dauber, all of which are dry. This takes a light hand, something on which I am still practicing. When I'm done, I might use a clear embossing ink and heat emboss the shaded areas to set the chalks with some shine. I don't color all parts of any ef, just what I want to emphasize. This is a soft effect that doesn't require staying within the lines.
I've also used a brayer to apply inks the ef itself, again with a light hand, and start away from the folder to apply the dye inks. I don't hesitate to mix colors! Overall patterns and florals seem to come out best for me when I apply multiple colors. If I am going to mist the ef, I will use a sheet of watercolor paper to be embossed- those pads of 15 sheets for $1.00 at JoAnns have worked well for me.
As I am cleaning the brayer, I use a good cardstock and have some unique creations from the inks! I've used my hexagon die from PTI on this variegated paper, and like the subtle creation as an overlay.
Try many approaches with a light hand, and enjoy the creative process!
