Chalkboard effects.

I saw the tutorial on the SU site for chalkboard-style stamping, which involved using their embossing buddy to simulate chalk dust and a whisper white ink pad (I assume it is their craft pad?)

Any other tips or products to achieve the effect? I am waiting to place another SU order until after the holiday catalog is live, and I don't have their whisper white pad yet. I did get the Chalk Talk set, and want to put it to use (yes, I should have ordered the pad when I ordered the set).

Any white pigment ink will do the trick for you and if you want a whiter effect then you can use a white embossing powder (and either white ink or Versamark). A white pencil (Prismacolor or similar) is useful to accentuate the hazy effect in some places. I've never seen an embossing buddy used and can't imagine the effect lasts very long since the powder rubs off very easily!

We had this as a TLC challenge at the very end of last year - the thread is here: TLC410 ~ Chalkboard Technique ~ (12/31/12) by joan ervin at Splitcoaststampers. You'll probably pick up a few tips there and by looking at some of the cards submitted for the challenge.
Like Joanne, I can't imagine that the embossing buddy is actually used to simulate the chalkdust, because unless you used fixative it would probably brush off in an envelope.

I believe the emboss buddy was used to keep the embossing powder fly away to a minimum, not as chalk dust.

Yes, the embossing buddy dust does come off. I got the soft, chalky look by using white pigment ink and a sponge; rubbed most of the ink on the sponge off on scrap paper before applying it to my black cardstock.

I get the chalky look by scraping off some dust from the tip of a pastel pencil and smudging it with my finger then using a fixativ. I thought that smudging white pigment ink was too bright for me and looked too fake. Real chalk would work just as well.

Martha Stewart sells "Chalk Board" labels and sheets. I bought some but haven't tried the embossing on them, good idea! Has anyone tried, how did it work??
