I pour a pile of embossing powder on a peice of paper.
Heat the brad while you're holding it with a tool and when it's hot just dip the head in the powder. If it isn't real smooth heat it again and it can be dipped again if needed.
I've done it many times with great success.
If you get lumps in the pile of poweder pick them out and just throw it away and pour the powder back in the jar. It seldom lumps.
I've embossed a brad by pressing the head into my Versamark pad, then dipping it into embossing powder and heating it with my heat gun. Takes a little while longer for the metal to heat up and the powder to melt, but it wasn't hard to get it smooth. I just heated it for a few more seconds than I would when embossing on paper.

Okay, this sounds very cool . . . has anyone tried embossing brads with the colors from the Embossing Stacks ?!? I have the Bold Brights stack and would love to make red brads for my Valentine's Class !!!
I haven't used the powders from the Embossing Stacks on brads...but i have used them on buttons!! Worked great for me...especially when i didnt have the right color button that i wanted to use on my card!! Just use tweezers in the holes to hold onto while heating!
Whats also great ....if you dont have the right color powder, just use whatever color ink and clear powder......i made baby pink buttons into summer sun buttons!!!
I have to chime in here, I also have done the brads but I found something else to do as well!!! Take those flat galss marbles for putting in the bottom of the vases in the floral dept... apply CE and stick it to a tac...then emboss when dry.... It is soo cool!!! I made my Dad a really cool cork board with matching Copper Push Pins in it!!! He loves it!
I love this technique, but sometimes my embossing powder chips right off the brads. Has anyone else had this problem?
If you use VersaMark to apply the embossing powder, it chips off. It is best to just heat the eyelet/brad first & then dip it directly in the powder. I haven't had any problems with that.
Did you also know that if you only have white grosgrain ribbon but have all your stamp pads you have ribbon in all your colors. just drag the ribbon through the ink and voila. I just recently did this for a swap when I realized I did not have the right ribbon color. It looks fantastic.
I've done the embossing on brads but what I just found out is how much easier it is to just use my Sharpies on the brads. Especially now since they have come out with the silver & gold metallic ones. I heard they are also coming out with copper. I was trying to emboss some of my brads black and found that the layers came off so that is when I tried my black sharpie and oh boy.....how much easier and they actually look nicer.

Maybe I need to try this again, or do it in two layers, when I tried this, my gold brad showed through???

Thank you!!!
Wheeeee! I had just tried the versamark/ embossing stack/heat gun on eyelets & it chips off when you whack it to set them. :(
As I was reading this post You All gave me the answer! Now I can try the heat gun/ embossing stack method. I'm so excited I too was wanting RED brads for Valentine's day.
I never thought of buttons either! oooooo-wheeee! :D
