We did have a week of substitute teachers in DS's 5th grade class and then the permanent teacher started. And it's a man! So far, he's doing a good job and thankfully, DS took right to him.

Got DS his Halloween costume last weekend before Party City gets totally insane....even going last week, the place was already packed with people looking for Halloween stuff. DS is going to be a cowboy and is so excited about Halloween.

Sending hugs out to all and hope someone checks in soon

JCI........

Hope everyone is well. It's sure lonely on this thread!

We have taken a hiatus with swim lessons for DS. He had taken them for over 3 years and in that time, we had 8 different teachers. He did OK each time the teacher changed.

We think he hurt his neck at one of his lessons; he missed the next 2 days of school and was definitely favoring the side of his neck. There was no "ow - I hurt myself" moment but something obviously happened.

So now, he says he's "scared" of the pool which is why we've put the lessons on hiatus for now.

Hope someone else checks in

Anybody out there??

I went to 2 Parents Nights last week to check out middle schools for DS. I can't believe he will be in 6th grade in September

The first school has almost 1000 students in the 3 grades they teach - eek!! They mentioned special ed for about 10 seconds in their presentation and there were no special ed teachers there to answer questions.

The second school has almost 500 students in the 3 grades they teach. Much better feel to this school. Better presentation and they had all 4 of their special ed teachers there to meet parents and answer questions.

Guess where DS will be going........

Yup.

The second school!

Now I just have to hope we will get in at "Primetime". This is the before-and-after school care offered on campus. Middle school starts way later than elementary and the later timeframe would make me so late for work.
We submit our online application on March 3rd - fingers crossed we get in!

DS has a dentist appt on March 21st - we opted to wait for his favorite dental assistant to come back to work after breaking her arm - ouch! We've made some good progress with his dental visists thanks to this fabulous assistant and I didn't want him to regress with a different person, so we waited.

Hope all is well with everyone

My goodness...I feel so alone on this thread!

DS had his dentist appointment on 03/21. All was good until it was time for him to lay down on the table.....

At one point, there were 7 of us holding him down so they could do the cleaning

We got through the cleaning, and by the time it was done, he was sweating profusely and crying. Breaks my heart to see him so upset but I know it has to be done so we do the best we can with it.

Hearing on the news today that the CDC has revised their numbers about kids with autism. I'm hearing 1 in 68 now.....wow

Hope everyone is doing well.

hi Lorraine,
my Kayla had to have her teeth cleaned so in January she was booked to have her teeth cleaned, xrayed, sealant put on and anything else that needed to be done.. she went into the hospital and her Dentist did all the work, she was put under and she did so good waking up and she had no cavities, didn't have to have any teeth pulled.. thank goodness...

we have tried her at the office to get a cleaning and it just is too much for her..

Hi Karen -

Thanks for checking in!

Glad to hear Kayla's dental visit went so well!

We did the same type of thing 2 years ago with Jake. Had him sedated, then did a cleaning, did x-rays and put on the molar sealant. Poor guy was sick for 2 days from the anesthesia but I'm glad we did all that work at the same time.

JCI........

Hope everyone is doing well.

DS is at work with me today. He's on summer break until September and then he'll start 6th grade.

My sister and I took DS on a tour of his new school 2 weeks ago. I set the tour up with the principal and she personally walked us around and showed us everything.

The classroom DS will be in looks very similar to his elementary school classroom so I know he will find it visually comforting to see the same kind of set-up.

We did get our before and after school care - yippee!! It's done in a bungalow similar to the classroom setting so I think he will do OK there too.

I think the challenges for DS will be changing clothes for PE class and also having a locker with a lock on it for his PE clothes. We'll see how that goes when the time comes.

Hopefully someone else will check in on this thread....I'd hate to see it disappear since there is so much info in all of the postings.

Bump.....

Want to keep this thread going since there is a lot of information on it.

DS is doing well in school.

He wants to be a pirate again this year for Halloween - fine with me since we still have the costume from last year!

Hope everyone is having a nice autumn.....

Good Morning!!

Kayla is doing great, school is fantastic for her this year!! I finally got her into see a therapist to see if she has more than PDD NOS, we are thinking ADHD also, she has not been able to sit for long to focus. Kayla is now on a medication called Tenex, she takes 1/2 mg every night before bed, and I have to say, HOLLY COW!!! what a huge difference! She started the 2nd week of school.
Hope everyone is having a great school year!!!!
Kayla wants to be a witch again for Halloween...

Taking DS to see Santa on Sunday

We do a Santa event at the hospital where my sister and I volunteer. It's just for the employees' special-needs kids. We have a quiet and controlled environment and Santa loves interacting with our kids. We have big cookies that are easier for kids with fine motor skill issues to hold. We have some craft tables to make a little something and we take pictures of the kids with Santa. Everything is free and parents are so grateful to be able to bring their kids to this since we all know taking our kids to a mall to see Santa is usually not an option due to all of the noise and long lines.

Happy Holidays to everyone!
