Default New to the forum and to cards/scrapbooking

My name is Judy, I was original from Taiwan and now live in California, full time job, full time wife and full time mom to my 3 year old princess.
I was always amaze by the beautiful paper and embellishments when I at Michaels and Joann but never know what it’s for?
Till few month ago I was on YouTube try to find gift ideas for Thanksgiving/Christmas and accidental link to a card making channel, ever since them I watch and search different video on YouTube for card making and scrapbooking, I got so addicted I need to watch at least one video before I sleep. And I found this forum, I’m hoping I can learn some techniques to help me start making my first card!
Can anyone tell me what is the must have tools to start? Thank you

Hi Judy and welcome.

Tools to start?

Well I would say a craft mat to protect your surface
A good craft knife
A good pair of sissors
a metal edge ruler
Glue - either double sided tape or craft glue (search glue or tape in the forums and you will get reviews on different brands)

From there you will need....card, your basic would be white, and any other colour you think will fit your card style.

Designer/Patterned Paper - if that is your style

Stamps, wood mounted or clear
Inks - dye or pigment (search dye or pigment in the forums and you will get reviews on different brands)

Colour Pencils or Markers

Embleshments......the list becomes endless

Hi Judy and welcome from New Zealand! I agree with jukie's list of things to start with. Also get card making books from the library as they have useful equipment lists plus will show you how to make a huge range of cards from where you can work out what appeals.

Hi Jukie,

Thank you so much for the list now I know what other tools I need to buy.

I didn't really know what to buy, but I have the super save card for extra 30% off from Joann and all the paper craft supplies at Joann already 30% off, so I went to Joann and bought myself a paper cutter, some paper punches, stamps (but I forgot the ink pad ) and other stuff which I don't even know I will be using or not. But I do save a lot...

Hope I will be making my first card very soon.

Hi Stephanie,

I was thinking to buy books but they are very pricy and not on sale, now you remind me about the library, all I have to do is get a library card.

Thank you

Welcome to SCS.. card making and scrapbooking are definately addicting, an obsession even. I started about 2 yrs ago. I started with card making when I discovered quilling. Qulling lead to cards which lead to scrapping. When I started I bought:

Paper Trimmer
Glue
Card stock
decorative scissors
Bone Folder
Stylis (with the ball on end for embossing)
A couple stamps and pads
Markers and colored pencils..

I soon after that got a score board and cuttlebug and Cricut Expression Die Cut Machine. the electronic cutting machine isn't necessary but makes things easier but they can be expensive toy.

Best wishes and have fun!
Jennifer
