I was thinking we should have a space for questions. I had to remove the cbox on my blog...too much *spam*. Sometimes I get asked questions about things in a comment left on my blog and I usually send an email to the person who asked. But...since us sistah's are all hanging out here again, I thought this would be a great spot to ask any art related questions. Maybe something you saw on a Babe's blog? New product? technigue?
Suggestion - it may be useful to "Sticky" this thread so it stays on top of all the chatter. That way there can be an ongoing Q&A with the SB team.
Also - it would be useful to have a Sticky thread with Bella Friday instructions and questions - how to submit, stamp requirements, how strict you must follow challenge requirements, etc.

AWESOME thinking...because I am not too savvy on here and don't know when/where or what that actually meant. Is it possible to do that now?? Or do we need to re-do this thread?
OK got a question, I just uploaded my Bellariffic Friday Challenge card and entered BELLARIFFIC0112 on the keyword but my card doesn't seem to show. Why is that ? can you guys see it on there ?
Never mind, I just saw it. Must takes awhile to upload

What do you use to highlight the backgrounds of your stamped and colored images? I'm thinking pencils but wondered if you have certain go to colors or a certain technique?

I usually use either watercolor pencils using a brush (rather than a refillable water brush) or chalks or pastels. These mediums allow me to color in those tight spaces with precision and be able to layer colors more easily to get a smooth blend. I use copics with a blender pen to get certain effects, ie., creating a ground that looks like sand, or for creating highlights around an image, but I don't use copics to fill in larger "white" areas --- because it would take me forever and I'd probably go through an entire refill of ink.

I use Copics...B0000, V0000, or YR30 are the ones I use most. Very soft, but still gives that nice "glow" to the image.

Laura, I generally use Prismacolor pencils blended with gamsol thanks to Paula. For ground shading there's French Grey 50% topped with French Gey 90%. For surround shading, there's Jasmine PC1012 for yellows or for blues I use Non-Photo Blue PC919 or Blue Slate PC1024 sometimes I even use Muted Turquoise PC1088.
I want to know how Paula stores all of her pencils. I have a TON and need some ideas..and I KNOW she probably more than I do LOL
ohhh, sister! I will get home and take some photos of how I am storing my collections. {and post them here later on in the evening} I have them spread out and I keep each brand seperate. I will tell you where I got my little holders too. I have stuff from Katie Brown {entertaining/tv host}, IKEA, Cracker Barrel and Michael's. I even have my copics out in the open. LOVE where I decided to store them!!

Laura, ya know I use pencils...I also have only one rule. If my image is outdoors, it gets green on the bottom and blue for the top. That is just an easy no-brainer way to rule out that scenario. But if your image is indoors-y type, than you have decisions to make. You can either coordinate a color to match papers, or you can choose a color opposite your image, to make it POP. {i tend to think this is a little more for BOY type cards, very bright and colorful} You can make something 'glow' by using a golden yellow shade, this always looks nice, when in doubt. OR, what I am into now is the more simple shading with a 30% grey {warm or french} on the opposite side of your highlighed area. I have been doing this a lot lately! It's more a clean, stark look. Not gonna want to use lots of distress inks on the edges for this, think...antique.
Does this help ya, or confuse you?
I was working on a calendar page today and ran into a problem. I put a layer of gesso down then used watercolor crayon on top of that to create my background color. I was working on a border and was coloring in sections with a copic marker. My marker ink was pooling. Should I have put another layer of gesso over the watercolor where I wanted to use my copics - or used a water based marker? It looks ok but it's streaky in some spots and I don't like that.
Hiya
I am not particularly fond of Gesso with watercolor.. it just doesn't look 100% right and if you rub long enough it can wipe right off . Having said that, you can try "setting" the watercolor with a gel medium, or PPA or some sort of sealer to "protect" the watercolor.. then you can work on your next layer. Try it! If you are working on paper and not canvas, why not work on watercolor paper..? Don't put gesso down in between the layers as it will wipe away all your work and make everything white! Gesso is used as a primer.. so to erase mistakes, to change colors etc.
It's probably streaky because of it being over the gesso. Let me know what you are working on.. what substrate.. paper, canvas, wood?

Ok, wanna see how I store my pencils and copics...
First photo is my Prismacolor pencils and they are in IKEA hanging containers. Sadly, I have had them for a few years now and they don't make these any more. {notice I have room to expand!} lol, The reason I can expand is because I found the twirly metal, polka dotted holder at Cracker Barrel this past fall. Clearance & like... $7.00! That new pencil holder is my Lyra pencils.
...next up I have my wooden bowl that is the Katie Brown find at a local grocery/all in one store. {Meijer in Michigan, but Target has some very cool ones too} This was only $7.00 and very classy for pencils, don't ya think! Then, on the shelf above my table, where I look at them all the time when I'm in my room...my 500 piece pencils from Japan {found in Martha Stewart a couple years ago...took over 2 years to collect, @ 25 pencils a month} YUM. I found the perfect size/shape glass vases at Michael's. Cheap, a few bucks each. The little orange cup holds my Koh-I-Noor pencils. It's a cool ceramic insulated cup that my mom gave me, clearance from Starbucks. {she also gave me a green one, that holds pens}
...last but not least is my copics. I have the full set, maybe minus some of the N's, C's, W's? I decided they would look good displayed behind me in an old wooden piece that I dug out of my friends dad's basement. FULL of metal nuts/bolts/hinges/nails...gross. I worked hard to clean it out and took it home! I don't travel with my copics, so this works for me. If I took them from my house..I would be in BIG trouble. haha
Paula..you are my hero!! Thank you so much...I needed to see something that was cute as well as functional. I am redoing my studio in the spring ( when I can paint iwth the windows open LOL) and I needed some good ideas. I have over 500 colored pecnils..( not talking about the water colors, Inktense, pastel pencils..charcoal pencils, tinted charcoal..etc..LOL) . I love the portability of cases for them, but I don't like the idea of haivng to "look" through the case for them ( as if I am not rummaging through the tins LOL)..I do like having them out so I can see them HAHA...

Wow, Paula! So cool! Your containers are all wonderful but my favorite is your polka dot container. I'm a sucker for polka dots!
This might be a stupid question, but I've just begun coloring with Prisma and gamsol (practicing really) and don't know much at all about colored pencils, so I'm wondering what makes you choose to color with one brand of pencil over another.
For me..it is all about blendability ( is that a word?)...some pencils blend better than others. It is about how much wax vs. pigment they have. Like the Prismacolor Verithins..they are hard pencils. Not blend worthy..they are for fine details and maybe outlines not actual coloring .
I know there are some that use the colorless blender and never use OMS but I never use the blender and always use OMS. Apparently there is a learning curve with a colorless blender that I can't seem to master LOL.
I am not sure what the reasons others have for chosing ceratina brands but those are mine..
Em - thanks for the reply. I'm working in a moleskin so I have to put something down on the paper or I'm afraid everything will bleed through. I hate to change since I've already got two months done. This was going to be my February page. I'm thinking I just won't use the copics. I used some water based markers on other parts of the page. They were better but of course I had to be careful or what I put down for the background bled. Next time maybe I'll try and acrylic as a base.
who wants to come to WI to teach me how to color?!
No seriously, I would like to know how to start. I bought a set of a dozen watercolor pencils that never got used, then bought a set of 72 Prisma pencils and OMS (and have been following the Prismcolor Chatter thread on SCS but don't really know where to start). I've played around with the OMS a bit, but I don't know coloring basics (other than stay inside the lines!) - perspective, lighting, shading, etc. I didn't have basic art in high school. I want to be able to color like the chicas who had cards featured in the release post today! There's gotta be a simple youtube video or tidbit of advice you have to get me from my current point A to point B (where you are!) by tomorrow, right? Tips, tutorial links. and pointers welcomed!

Come to my house tonight...I am in Michigan, just a hop-skip-and-a-jump away. lol

I mainly stick with my Prismacolor pencils. Some brands do 'play' well with each other and some do not. For instance, some brands are soft and waxy and some are a harder lead, less waxy. Prisma is the easiest to get in the US and a perfect choice for price...coupons at the Michaels, Joanns. I like the color choices and for me it's about choice! I also like to look at them and I kinda collect them. Do you need them all, no. The Prismacolor Verithin are NOT for this technique. Watercolor pencils, are NOT for this technique. You want a wax, soft pencil for blending and the gamsol/OMS is what makes that happen. does this help?

I beg to differ here..you NEED them all HAHAHHAHHA ( or at least I need them all because you never want a pencil to feel left out right??
I have a question. Wasn't there a bella(?) or an uptown girl(?)that's perched on the edge of a martini glass? I don't mean peeptini, that's not the image I'm thinking of. Or is my memory faulty and I'm turning into dementabella?

Hmm....there's a Stella stamp with a martini, is that what you're thinking about?
