Default Ways to Save

There used to be a thread called something like FACE (no clue what that meant but it rings a bell so I'm using it!)

Though we are completely debt free there always seems to be something we are saving for as a purchase...

Currently it is a riding lawn tractor. Two weeks ago we had 2 riders, both broken and 2 push mowers, both broken! Hubby is not a small engines man but he is learning!

He took mowers apart, ordered parts, ordered the wrong part once because he forgot to transpose the diagram to what it looked like when he was laying on the ground working on the rider, then he fixed the mowers...fortunately we live in the country so our acre of 7" tall grass doesn't bother anyone but us!

We now have 2 working riders and 2 working push mowers!!!! At a fraction of the cost for purchasing a new one. He used funds from the savings for the new tractor to buy parts to fix the other equipment and bide time for saving more.

Today I was looking at financial blogs that I have in my favorites, then followed a link...and found this...

10 Kinda Crazy Things We Did To Buy A House At 24 - Beauty Through Imperfection

Do others have ideas of how you personally save?

I cooked yesterday & packed enough food for us to eat 12 lunch & dinners + 2 breakfast meals + snacks & drinks. Only one planned meal out & that will be the first meal we've eaten out since early Feb.

Could you share what you packed and will you need to purchase fresh items while gone?

Wow...with all your traveling and no eating out meals...

When we travel I do well the first day...then I get crazy because of trying to keep food cold.

Fruit: grapes, cherries, peaches, nectarines, apples
Snacks in addition to fruit: beef jerky, cheese sticks, homemade trail mix, dried apricots

Choices for lunch/dinner
Beef or chicken tamales (part of my crew will eat them cold)
Ham or turkey sandwiches on 100 calorie buns
Tacos
Chicken & beef fajitas
BBQ beef
Chicken for Chicken, Bacon, Ranch Wraps

I don't think the fruit will last the whole trip, so I plan on buying more & that's it.

I tear my bounce sheets in half...I still get the static out of my clothes and get twice the amount of sheets from one box.

It's not a big savings but it is saving none the less!

I've not done well at all the last year or so with saving or spending so I'm trying to get back in. A friend and I are challenging/encouraging each other to spend $100 a week on food, toiletries, and household items. Last week was the first week and we went over about $30 going out of town at the last minute. This week, I went to CVS and did a couple of "deals" and now I have $62 to spend on food and detergent and diapers and we'll see how it goes. Since learning how much sugar is in everything I do think I'm buying fewer snacks!

I'm on a spending freeze for paper crafts. I'm not adding any fabric to my stash until I sew up some of what I have. Same thing with yarn.

Clothes I'm trying to make it myself or shop secondhand mostly because if I do that I don't have to worry about whether it was ethically made or not. (Which is another reason to sew my stash rather than buy more fabric.)

We're going to the library a lot. (Although this is also introducing me to a lot of books I want to buy, lol!)

So I tried the foil. But it didn't work as well as dryer sheets. My dish cloth was the only thing that had static, so I think it would work in a pinch. But I gotta admit, l like the smell of dryer sheets on my warm towels.

Thought I had all of the ingredients on hand to make KFC copycat coleslaw dressing. So rather than run to the store, I'm making homemade blender mayo.

Another way to save...check your bills...see if what you paid for is what you got...

Ask for refunds or store credits when errors are made...

I'm going to talk to hubby about selling a vehicle come Oct. 1...I want to do the math on how much it is costing us to have the van which we only use to haul PS's harp...

When RB gets married then he will be off our insurance...and I think he will sell the Mustang so that will be off our insurance...

PS has 2 gigs in December which she is committed to and which she loves doing though they don't even pay for the gas to get her there...I'm sure we could rent a vehicle to haul the harp for less than we are paying for insurance and wear-n-tear on the van...

Also...on Saturday I'm taking cash to the Rubber Stamp Expo...going to see how little I can spend...I know I am looking for a specific shape of "Happy Anniversary"...and vertical sayings...I do plan to do a couple Make-N-Takes at one booth where I always do them...

We joined the dollar shave club, the 9$ package. We got our first one this week and both Ed and I really like the razors. Shaves better then the Schick we have been using.

Has anyone heard about applying olive oil to razor blades for extended use? I use olive oil and/or coconut oil for dry skin, cooking and such. Olive oil for cleaning stainless steel, dry scalp, lip balm and etc. It cuts down on buying individual products. I use a couple of drops of lavender oil in with the laundry detergent and only use fabric softer/sheets in winter to cut down on static.
I'm going to try the foil! And check out the other links.
Thanks!

I have not heard this...but I wonder if you could just shave when you put the olive oil on your skin? I use cheap hair conditioner and very seldom "cut" myself.

For static release I use vinegar in place of fabric softener...and only in the towels...most fabrics nowadays doesn't carry static...if I wash slips with knit nightgowns then I need vinegar in that load also.

I'm buying peppermint oil today to see if it will help with allergies...the other night when I got a massage the lady had me try it...(I react to the unscented soap that she uses on her bedding so now I use my own bedding but there must still be something on the head brace that bothers me.)

I put peppermint & lemon oils in the diffuser & we haven't had to use any allergy medication for seasonal allergies this year. I did try a couple of brands before I found that the "cheaper" brands just don't seem to have the same effectiveness for medicinal use. Both my boys use oils now for different things that I have found a couple of middle of the road priced brands to use for the oils that they use a lot.

I have no clue what a diffuser is...and thankfully I can't describe illegal drug paraphernalia but in definition of words a diffuser is like a drug sniffer!

You can use essential oils in different ways... the most popular seem to be (in no particular order):

1. using them on your body
2. using them in your body
3. using a diffuser Mist Spa Vapor Diffuser 1 Each | Diffusers Products | Puritan's Pride
4. using them to clean with

Going to ask K if E uses one...

Do you use it in the bedroom?
