Good thing I have some coffeemate pumpkin spice creamer left from last year because I haven't seen any out yet this year!
Saying this made me question the expiration date! Mine is aug 2014 so I'm good. I buy the powdered version, so I'm safe.
This year I'll buy more so I know I can make it to next year.

The house I grew up in we did this! We would run the water in the tub, but if you wanted to be in the bath more than 2 minutes and still wanted it warm you better fill the kettle!

I want pumpkin pie. That's soft right? I could make a pumpkin pie and eat it after my teeth are out? Just not the top crust?

I wish I was better about not using the microwave. I was doing okay with it and then got back to reheating, etc.

It tastes different...children not used to wheat have to learn to like the flavor...and red wheat berries have nutty flavor which I don't like in my bread but some people really like it.

I have kept wheat berries for several years and not had an issue but once it is ground is when it started losing flavor (thus the expiration dates on flour.)

I'm by no means an expert on wheat flour but I have learned more the longer I've used it.

Thanks for all the answers! I love the conversation it struck up. I do have a special blade attachment for my vitamix blender that is for grinding grains. I did try it a few times but it never stuck with me. I thought if know the answers to my questions might make me want to try again. It does and I will. I can actually get the wheat berries in the bulk section of several of my stores.

Do you ever mix your ground whole wheat with some store bought white?

Kewl. Didn't know that. I'm with you about not being able to eat the dry beans. The ones I was talking about were often either molded during storage while dry and then cooked or that were cooked and went rancid after cooking. People in those days ate things that we might not think about eating AT ALL.

Mmmm pie! Pumpkin pie doesn't have a top crust. It does have a bottom crust but a lot of people don't use a crust at all. Just spray your pie pan with oil first. then I guess you could call it pumpkin custard.

A blurb from the Smithsonian on the fungus issue in the Salem Witch Trials.

A Brief History of the Salem Witch Trials | History & Archaeology | Smithsonian Magazine

Additionally, numerous hypotheses have been devised to explain the strange behavior that occurred in Salem in 1692. One of the most concrete studies, published in Science in 1976 by psychologist Linnda Caporael, blamed the abnormal habits of the accused on the fungus ergot, which can be found in rye, wheat and other cereal grasses. Toxicologists say that eating ergot-contaminated foods can lead to muscle spasms, vomiting, delusions and hallucinations. Also, the fungus thrives in warm and damp climates—not too unlike the swampy meadows in Salem Village, where rye was the staple grain during the spring and summer months.

I just meant the part that sticks above the pie on the edge. I most definitely eat my crust normally, but I'd be willing to leave that little remnant if I got to have pumpkin pie for a week. Of course, it's been a while since I made pie crust. I hope I remember how...

Top crust was not a good choice of words. Although, I bet it would taste good with a true top crust. More like a breakfast pastry with a pumpkin center than a pie, though.

I use potato water (either from when I boil potatoes or I add some potato flakes to the water)...and 5/8 wheat with 3/8 white (unbleached)...and then I finish the kneading in white otherwise the loaf has a "bumpy" texture and the kids we get visiting complain about our bread...

It's maybe for me, too, kramomma! I do make 100% whole wheat most of the time, but I don't make sandwich bread anymore. The kids prefer store bought and it's easier to count Jeff's carbs/sugars/proteins with store bought.

A padded envelope of purple happiness arrived at my house today! Smiling so big my face hurts! Pink Snuggles said, "well that ain't for me." Nope, sure ain't...but it makes me smile...

Now to see if tonight after supper I can sneak away for even 30 minutes without 4 extra munchkins so I can touch and feel it all...and put the items where they belong...in my stamp room!

A bit of a richer taste, texture is a big thing. Also less processed means more nutrient benefits for you but the biggest benefit to ate is fiber so anything but instant.

ew. (on the rancid after cooking or molding during drying process)

but yeah...the ginger helps. drain off the soaking water...put fresh water & more ginger in the crockpot when you get ready to cook 'em.

I did find steel cut oats...pricey. And Quaker makes them...I did not see ANY other brand of oatmeal other than Great Value & there was no Great Value steel cut.

I had to look. Good thing y'all told me where. It looked like maybe four or five canisters were already taken...so they were sorta hidden back in a hole.

anyway. Got that...will try Cher's recipe. I emailed it to myself.
