Heart October - Stamping with Friends!

And our theme is....drum roll....BIRTHDAYS!

There's lotsa ways you can go with this. You can even make CHRISTMAS CARDS!

I'm gonna up the ante a bit.

You really didn't think I was gonna say...just make birthday cards, now did you?

You can do four individual cards, one with each challenge. Or, you can do whatever you want with the four points. You can do one a week!

1. stitching! Hand stitch, sewing machine or faux! ( Post 5 )
2. specialty! Not your usual cardstock. ( Post 6 )
3. all mixed up! Let's dauble in mixed media! ( Post 17 )
4. sparkle! Sequins, glitter, rhinestones!

Each Sunday in October, I will be back to elaborate on the point for that week!

Default 1. stitching! Hand stitch, sewing machine or faux!

WHO? you

WHAT? stitching

WHEN? this week

WHERE? on paper

WHY? cuz it's fun

HOW? keep reading

mollymoo's random thoughts on stitching:
- you can use your sewing machine. I have a Janome Sew Mini that I use exclusively for stitching in paper!
- got embroidery floss? DMS embroidery floss
- stamp an image - stitch the outline
- handwrite a title - stitch
- doodle (hearts, stars) - stitch
- recreate cross stitch stitches on your paper
- use a stencil (such as those used for Mister Huey or any stencil) and a paper piercer
- take a shape, poke holes around it, stitch.
- use a die, trace, poke holes, stitch
- using a circle die, pierce, and instead of just stitching around to make circle, stitch across (fill in the circle with "stripes") in one color and stitch around the circle in another color.

Feel free to combine this with a HYCCT challenge or any other challenge, link up ideas or ask questions.

While it's a challenge in itself, once you get used to stitching, you should see it as another useful technique to bump up your project another notch. Give it a try.

Default 2. specialty! Not your usual cardstock.

WHO? you

WHAT? any paper other than traditional cardstock & patterned paper

WHEN? this week

WHERE? on your project

WHY? cuz it's fun

HOW? keep reading

Dabbling in the area of specialty papers includes vellum (white, color or metallic, transparencies, glitter paper, chipboard, and sticker paper). You can die cut these or punch these. To sticker paper, you can add fine glitter or flocking. You can smack acetate with transparencies! For glitter paper, I really love POW Glitter Paper...it's a smooth flexible glitter paper that does not shed. You can leave chipboard naked or you can paint it! I have just acquired some color & metallic vellum from the Studio Calico shop...(happy birthday to me! )...and I've just caressed...I mean handled it...and I love it. I'm looking forward to die cutting it!

What other specialty papers can YOU think of?

Feel free to combine this with a HYCCT challenge or any other challenge, link up ideas or ask questions.

If I use watercolor paper or glossy paper is that acceptable?

It was fun...and easy...I sprayed a tad too much water so it got muddy on the edge but I didn't use the edge!

Now I'm waiting for the next challenge for October...maybe I could use it to make a birthday card for Pink Snuggles' golden birthday today!

Mixed Media!

MIX34 - 09.20.13: The challenge today was to use any two types of paint for your project (ink, acrylic, watercolor, gesso, Smooch... you get the idea!)

Paint x 2. Use any two types of paint for your project (ink, acrylic, watercolor, gesso, Smooch... you get the idea!)

There is a Mix-a-bility challenge on Fridays! Mix-Ability Challenge - Splitcoaststampers

Paint a background, paint a stamp, mist with a mask and then stamp...

There is also a Mixed Media Color Challenge here: A Mixed Media Color Challenge. You can use any mixed media you wish, just follow the colors.

I like acrylic paint, gesso, ink, mists and watercolor! Mixed media is not limited to things you can color with...it includes fabric, metals, wood...it's simply mixing mediums.

Basic tools for the traditional papercrafter are ink for color & paper for base. Mixed media would be using items other than the traditional ink & paper. You simply use a non-traditional color &/or base for your project.

The paint x 2 challenge is an excellent place to get your feet wet.

HOWEVER, feel free to choose any mixed media challenge (or just go for it!) for your project! Above all, have fun.

If I use the red stripy-tape as lines on my card and then sprinkle it with glitter is that a mixed-media?

Or using that spritzer with silver sparkles?

Or using distress ink on glossy paper?

Spritzer with sparkles + a stamped image (could be distressed ink on glossy paper)

mist + ink.

Glitter + a stamped image (could be distressed ink on glossy paper)

glitter + ink.

Distressed ink on glossy paper, by itself, no. That's one ink + one paper. The mixed media part is mixing two mediums. Two different paper (a medium) types (glossy paper & chipboard) and/or two different color mediums (ink + mist). When you do one medium each, it's not mixed media.

The very first Mixed Media challenge on SCS was Yin/Yang. Seen here: MIX1 - Yin Yang.

Lydia is challenging to use a matte medium & a shiny medium. She lists examples of each.

Another thing I do is I mix wood embellishments with fabric or with sequins or with metal. That's mixing mediums...wood & metal. wood & fabric. fabric & metal. (note, I also have a stamped image on paper somewhere.) In this case, if you wanted to stamp your image in distress ink on glossy paper and then added wood & fabric (or wood & metal)...you would wind up with a mixed media project.

Hope that helps.

#4 - sparkle, sequins, glitter, rhinestones!

Sequins are all a rage...glitter is making a comeback...and so are rhinestones! Even the big honkin rhinestones.

Stickles - is another oldie, but a goodie.

Glitter tape - is another way to add sparkle.

I have used sequins in vellum pockets or just drop them on my project & glue them down where they fall.

Other ways to add sparkle would be using glitter paper. I'm quite fond of American Crafts POW Glitter paper! It's OMW! smooth, non shedding, not obnoxious, not shy.

If you find gold vellum...it adds a sheen.

There are also mists that add sparkle - shine or glitter mists.

Paint - there are glitter paints.

Even ribbon can add a glimmer, sparkle or sheen to your projects.

How will you add sparkle to your project? What's your "go to" for adding the WOW (sparkle wise) to your project?

Me - sequins.

Card #4 should be much easier than #3...I am counting the HYCCT as my #3 card...that was A LOT OF WORK! But...I sure learned a lot through making that card...

I have a grand total of 1. And it doesn't even HAVE to be a birthday card, it could be new years or graduation or something.

Here's my sparkle birthday card. HYCCT1325 Party Kitty by mrslaird - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

My Captain America card was a birthday card (at least, that's why I made it) but it doesn't fit any of the extra categories.

Edited: I forgot I made this one. Burlap paper. http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/ga...0&ppuser=64857

You rock the CAS style! I loved the Captain America card. Put some stickles on the star. Then it's bling. LOL.

Thanks for playing along!

I'm late but I doubt I'll be last...

Here are my 4 cards...not all were birthday cards but I used the challenge making a card for a reason...

#1 a sewing machine
#2 used coffee filter for my paper
#3 watercolor pencils with Stazon-ink and those Duplos bricks...uhm from WAY BACK during the old Flybabies days.
#4 used SU silvery spritzer on acrylic block ink stamp

Sorry, I am late posting!!!! Yesterday was family day and today Steve and I had a date day!!

I didn't do the stitching because I thought you meant we had to actually use needle and thread and I just couldn't wrap my head into adding that to any project this month, but now I notice you said "faux" so i could have drawn on the stitches, correct? Next time!

In the end I guess I created 2:

Mixed media: courage

Sparkle, Gemstones: HYCCT1331B - Our Friends Make Our World

Oh my goodness! I was just scanning everyone's posts and I saw a theme that apparently didn't register! MY card are NOT bday cards!!! Sorry Melissa! Shaking my head at myself! (hiding behind my glasses)

Thank you Melissa, I enjoyed reading your posts throughout the month of October!!!!
