I do on occasion pass along some paper to friends, but I had not thought about donating it. Where do you donate yours? I guess I could give it to the children's department at church... Much better than throwing it out or, as you said, trying to use it just because I have it, but then being unhappy with the results.
One place I know that is happy to receive paper donations is our local Ronald McDonald House. My friend that is an SU demo volunteers there every month and takes stamps, paper, etc. so the kids (and their families) can make cards and little projects. It's a really popular activity.
If you have a RMH close by, that may be an option...
Thanks for that terrific idea. There is an RMH in downtown Fort Worth.

Hey girls!
Bob and I are celebrating our Christmas tonight - after shopping yesterday. I have tomorrow to play on here and will catch everyone up. I've seen some addresses show up in my PM box. Thank you!

( my parents are friends with the director so they would be able to find out)

A women's shelter would be great. My daughter lived in one when her oldest daughter was just a baby. They appreciated every little thing that was donated to the shelter.
I'm not sure how it will work out for me, but I do send a good number of cards each month - birthday, sympathy, a few anniversary, encouragement. Most of the time I can pull something from my "stash," but often I have to scramble to get something made at the last minute. Also, I've been known to mail birthday cards a few days late.
This challenge might help me keep one of my New Year's resolutions to send out birthday and anniversary cards on time in 2012. I didn't send an anniversary card to my sister-in-law this year and at Christmas she asked me why I didn't send a card - they really look forward to receiving them! I thought no one really pays attention or keeps track but apparently some do. So please sign me up. I'll take the March 1 challenge spot.
Here's the first of my cards for January. Should have had this made and in the mail by today. Maybe my nephew will receive it on time for his birthday next Saturday. That's one down and four more to go.
Okay, I finished a dozen cards (using a one sheet wonder template) so that takes care of January birthdays and gets me started on Feb. Thanks for the incentive to get these done. I'll post on the OSW thread too if I can. I couldn't post there the last time I tried.
Don't have "events" I need cards for in January, but I told my sis when I was there at Christmas that I was making it a goal to send each of her kids a card once a month. I don't know if it is just their school district or the whole state, but they have done away with teaching cursive writting in school. My niece is 9 and has beautiful penmanship. I told her if she wanted to practice it she could write me letters and I would write her back. Hence, the cards to them each month.

Long and short - I need 2 cards for January.
Seems like more and more states are not teaching cursive writing in the schools. My son had multiple choice on his spelling tests until I protested!

Remember to post at least 1 of your cards here (or a link to your gallery) so I can credit you for the monthly participation drawing.
Great Aunt Alta is the 3rd and my mom and Uncle are the 4th..... I just kept thinking I have time.
my mom's is done, but not Alta's she is 92 this year. I just found out that she prefers email over letters! I can't even get my mother to email! LOL
I have the card in my head for her.. same one I am doing for a workshop in March. I will share later today.. it will be done to mail Tuesday!

It was on the morning news back in September when school started. They were talking about the kids (immigrants) that 'didn't get it'
In an effort to keep those children in school.. it is being dropped.
grrrr. My nephew was doing well with it too! He just learned the alphabet in cursive last year,
I love your idea!
My mom used to write notes to my kids and they would practice writing skills to respond. It was great
My Great Aunt sent me a letter asking me if I would mind doing email.. her writing was beautiful and perfect. Although it is in pencil I want to keep that letter.
Do you girls send cards to nephews, nieces, Aunts and Uncles.....?
What about Cousins? Is there like an age where you just quit?
I send cards to the nieces and nephews. There are only 6 of them and I don't have kids of my own so they have always gotten a little spoiled by me. The oldest three are out on their own so only get cards now, but the younger three still get gifts and cards.
I never send birthday cards to aunts, uncles, etc. When my grandparents were alive I always sent them birthday cards. I do have an uncle with cancer so when I think of it, I send "thinking of you" type cards.
Kelly I love your card album! I made perpetual calanders for mom and my sisters a few years ago, but I think for next Christmas I will make the albums for my oldest neice and nephew's wives. If I get really ambitious I could make cards to put in the folders to start them out with.
No wonder you see more and more kids being homeschooled. What's next? Stop teaching them math and reading because some kids just don't get it? The only way anyone gets anything is by repetition. I'll have to ask if my granddaughter's school quit teaching them cursive.
My first thought was how are they ever going to learn to have a "signiture" for legal documents if they don't know cursive.
How did they think students would actually learn to spell if they had multiple choice?
I never thought about the legal documents, that is a good point. As to the spelling, they told me they were training them to take the state assestment tests, you know, the little circles you have to fill in with the #2 pencil? We finally came to an agreement, the quiz would be the traditional teacher stands up front and speaks the work and the actual spelling test would be the fill in the circles

Welcome to our little group. I'll get you added to the list, Lily. Thanks for taking a challenge spot. Hmmm Guess I need to get mine posted today huh?

Left love and added you to the participation list, Val. Nice job!

That's sad they're not teaching penmanship. I guess with everything going electronic, you're not supposed to know how to write. Just which buttons to push.
Did I miss the keyword for this challenge? Not that I have my cards done yet but just checking....heehee
and are the challenges going to be posted in this topic or a new one each time?
Hey Sheri - thanks for asking.
January - KEYWORD: AOCC12A
I'll be posting the challenges here and January's going up in a minute. Managed to get a cold for New Years Eve and slept til almost 10 this morning. A little behind already ::: sigh :::

That was the explaination my sis and BIL got from the school when they questioned why it was being dropped. How sad is that? My neice has to write a journal entry every day for homework and she is not allowed to turn it in written in cursive.
Remember: You can use these challenges for ANY month you need a little boost of inspiration.
January 1 Challenge:
New Years Day always means a bright shiny start to a new year. So your Challenge is to use...
BLING!
Some suggestions:
glitter - try glittering a piece of floral wire or even a twisty from the bread sack! Stamp an image, cut it out, paint with glue and add glitter... any shape is just waiting for glitter!
gemstones - any color/ shape/ size make great flower centers, accenting swirls
Silver/ Gold Chenille stems or wired Christmas ribbon
Stickles! Outline a stamped shape, color in part of an image or just a few well-placed dots.
And if you've not seen the book Delight in the Details I highly recommend it. And although I can't picture a Kindle version doing this book justice, if you'd like to check it out first... the 'borrowed' Kindle edition is FREE to Amazon Prime Members.
Right after dinner....down to the craft room to try, for the first time, SU heat/stick powder with dazzling diamonds!!!! Wish me luck!!!!

I heard about them doing away with it here in Texas too. I thought it was strange and I don't know if they've done it or it's just a plan. So nice that your niece has good penmanship. Mine looks like a doctor's - totally illegible. LOL.

Okay, help me understand please. The January 1 challenge to use bling is for our February cards, right? I thought we were supposed to have our January cards done by 12/31. If I'm confused (highly likely) let me know. Thanks.
Also, the keyword AOCC12A - is that for the cards we're sending in January - or for the cards we're making in January to send in Feb.?

I believe the bling challenge is for cards you are making in January. The January cards didn't have to be done by 12/31. The idea was to get a start on them in case we had to send any out the first week of January. The keyword is for cards we're making in January. If I'm wrong, Kelly will set the record straight.
