I am trying to weed my way through all the forums and subforums and topics but after 2 hours, I haven't found what I am looking for. Hoping someone can help.
I am fairly new to stamping and have Never participated in a swap here. I am looking for a newbie swap. Is there such a thing? I am concerned about getting into swaps because as I look through the gallery, my work is very very basic compared to almost every card I see. I would HATE to disappoint anyone involved in the same swap as me and not be able to participate in the future if my work falls short of the mark.

I look forward to hearing back from someone on this. I am sure I can't be the only on that feels this way!

Thanks,
Paula

Hi Paula,

For the most part I think most hostesses welcome newbies. You've got to start somewhere, right? Sometimes I do see newbie swaps advertised or ones that say "newbies welcome", but I did a search and don't see any open ones like that popping up. I say just look for an open swap that interests you and sign up.

Like Lorien said, you have to start somewhere! I think most hostesses and swappers know that there are beginners out there. What one person thinks is great, another might think is not so great. As far as art goes, it's all a matter of opinion as to what's "good" and what's not. One of the best ways to grow in your ability is to swap! Put out what you think is your best work and check out what you get back. You get new ideas, techniques, etc from swaps.

Here is a link to some stamping basics and what makes a "quality" card.

Making Your Swap Project

"Quality" is used here in terms of the paper used, straight cuts, the way the card was put together, etc.

Pick any swap and go for it! Happy Swapping!

Default I would like to join a swap

Hi,
I would like to join a swap but I have no clue who, what, where, when or how to do this. I know why --- cuz its fun and I have way too many stamping supplies that are just sitting here dying to be used.
Can someone please put me in the right direction. Where do I begin? Who do I contact? What are the rules for swapping? How many swaps are there?
Thank you in advance for anyone who can help me!

Talking swaps

I'm on Swap-bot.com I've traded alot of my stash items for more male related items for my Iraq card route.
I like the community there. They have a system there for flakers. U start as a newbie, they can track Ur swaps etc.
All kinds of swaps avaiable.

Hi Lori,

First you will need to join the swap group if you would like to participate. You can find information about that in this thread:
The Swap Forum is Now a User Group! How to Sign Up & Important Rules HERE

After you've completed the steps in post #5 of that thread, you will want to read up on the information in this thread:
Swapper 101 - How to Swap

That should get you started. Feel free to post again or PM me if you have any other questions.

Default swap reply

hi
thanks for the quick reply. im surprised i found my way back to this page. im not computer savvy by any stretch of the imagination. i hope this works. i followed your steps - joined the swap and updated my profile.
all i know is that i want to make cards. ive been in a swap for about a year that a friend hooked me up with. it is not with SCS tho. this is my first time trying to do this. i have lots and lots and lots of supplies (mostly SU) and would love to be able to use them.
ive joined the ranks of the permanently disabled and am no longer able to work so i have more time on my hands than i want to on most days when i feel good. please let me know what the 'themes' are for any and all swaps that i can join.
thanks again!

HI,

I just approved your request for the swap group. If you want to do cards there is a whole section for that. You'll just need to click on the Cards subforum under Swaps and look for one you would like to join. They all have different due dates and different rules. All of the important stuff like that should be covered in the first post of the thread. Once you find one that is open that you want to join, just post a reply to the thread saying your would like to sign up. The hostess should reply and add you to the list of swappers. Have fun!

I've just joined my first swap and can't wait to see everyone's contributions. My only concern is about what to mail them in. I've thought about using an 8 x 10 photo mailer with a smaller one (with postage on it) inside for the return. How do others do it? I apologize if this has been answered already. I couldn't find it anywhere.

TIA

Thanks for the reply! So they aren't actually signing up to be in the swap? Subbing just seems like a weird word to use, I was guessing they wanted to sub for someone who might drop out (even though that didn't make much sense)?

No, unless they contact you further I wouldn't list them as a participant.

I think they are interested in your swap or they wouldn't have subscribed to it. So you may be hearing from them soon. Perhaps they want to finish up some other swaps before they sign up for more.

Hey Kristine! I think you figured it out. The swap forum is now a user group and you have to request to join. There is a thread in this forum about how to do that.

The Swap Forum is Now a User Group! How to Sign Up & Important Rules HERE

I just did approvals so you should be all set now.

1 more question... i think i know the answer but i wanna be 100% positive. When the instructions state, 6+1 cards (or whatever), this means 7 cards that are the exact same (identical in every way)????

A shoebox swap is when you design a card or project and put all of the materials to make that card/project numerous times into a shoebox, or other similar container. Then you usually take your shoebox to some type of event and take turns going around to make each other's cards/projects.

I am planning to host a swap - not right away - think I need more experience doing swaps first. Anyway I know the norm is 4+1 but could I do it 4+2 if I explain why I'm doing it. I don't want to give my ideas away but one card would be for me but one would go to a specific group - such as to our local cancer center. Is it OK as long as I explain everything in my description?

Yes, you can do that. As long as you state it in the rules up front then the swappers know what they are signing up for.

Ok, I have a question about the card swaps. Since this is a stamping website, is stamping required on the cards, or only if the hostess requests it? Thanks you.

I don't know that it is required that you use a stamp, but they should be hand made. The rules for each swap should be posted in the first post of the thread. If you are concerned about it, you can always check with the hostess.

When we submit our information for approval do we hear one way or the other whether we are approved or not? I understand the process takes 24 hours I believe...but I was hoping to hear something by the end of today perhaps?

Never mind the above question...I keep forgetting to look at the memberships I am subscribed to...I thought I would have gotten an email alert...sorry for posting...

No problem.

For anyone else wondering, we do not send a message when you are approved. You will be able to see that you are in the Swap Hostesses and Participants group if you look at your own profile. There is a place on the right side that lists your group memberships. Or if you try to post in the swap forums and it works you will know that you are in. You will only get a PM from us if you are missing info and we are unable to approve the request.

New swaps are opened everyday. The title of the thread shoud indicate if a swap is open or full and closed.

Hope that helps.

Default Can't reply to a swap?

I cannot reply to a swap in order to join but the lists and verbiage indicate it's still open and accepting swappers. The error message I get is you are not authorized to post here. I've even subscribed to the swap. Any help?
Thanks!

You have to join the swap group before you can post in the swap threads to join a swap.

this isn't a question, but a statement LOL-
please ship your items in such a way that the Samsonite gorilla could handle them and they'd still be fine. we spend a long time making swaps, and don't want them not to survive the trip.
please package everything in ziplock bags, use thick cardboard so the envelope cannot be easily bent, and tape the envelope closed. also, please label the envelopes using permanent ink.
thanks

I'm not exactly sure how to word this question, but I have a question regarding using the swapped items in something that I am selling. For instance, I've been in a lot of theme specific scrapbooking swaps. I make mini albums/gift albums that I sell to friends/family, I was wondering if I can use some of these swap items in these albums?

I don't think there is anything that can stop you from doing that.

Some stamp companies require that you use a copyright stamp if you are selling something with their stamped images on it. So as long as you do that I think you are covered legally.

I do know that people have mixed feelings about selling swaps.

I kind of felt that way too, but it's not only their swap but part of something I create using swap items. I don't know. I guess I'll give it some thought when it actually happens.

Thanks for the info.

Somewhere on this site I once found a table that could be printed off that kept track of the swaps that you were in, but now I can't find it. Anybody know where I can find it?

It's in this forum, but I think the default settings for the forums are on the last 100 days so you don't see it unless you change that. Here is a link:
