Arrow SBSC42 SCRAPPER OF THE WEEK X2!

Hello Scrampers! I bet you are ready to find out who the scrappin chicks of the week are...

Kimmie and I chose some fabulous layouts from our very own SCS Gallery of talented scrapbook artists as our Inspirational Sketches for this week...aka: VISUAL SKETCHES!

The official RULES can be found HERE !

Thank You to everyone that was able to participate in VSBN and to make it such a HUGE SUCCESS!!! WE know Darcy will do a fantabulous job for July's VSBN! Give yourself a pat on the back! You are all winners & FABULOUS!

Feel free to adjust the sketches to best fit your photos...Be as creative as you wish to be! Remember there is no time limit! Oh and PLEASE make sure you upload your layouts using the code: SBSC42...Many Thanks!

Scrappin Diva of the Week!

Okay girls, well you KNOW how much I love pages with lots of pics on them!!! Well, I saw so many great ones over VSBN (which, by the way.....totally ROCKED!!!) so I had to use one of them for my sketch this week!!

My "Scrappin Diva" choice for this week is Buckeye Stamper!! She did some fabulous layouts during this past weekend and I just LOVED this page she did for the Magical Seasons challenge! It has lots of pics (which is right up my alley) and I love that the pics are generally of the same scene, with minor variations. It is a great layout and I know you will love to use it this week!

aprvsbni_che Buckeye Stamper

As always, feel free to put your own twist on it and congratulations to Buckeye Stamper for being this week's "Scrappin Diva"!!

(Kimmie's Notes)

Kimmie and I agreed VSBN layouts would be where we would get our inspiration from this week...My pick has a very clean style. I love her layouts and the elements that she adds to her pages. She did an awesome job on the challenge's during VSBN...let's give her a nice BIG HUG and join me in congratulating Misermom! Misermom is my choice for Scrappin Diva of the week! I was lucky enough to talk Staci into writing me up a little something to share with everyone...a bit of insight into her scrappin style....Please see attachment for Staci's awesome little essay about scrapbooking. Thanks Staci! and Congrats!

APRVSBNF Every Moment by Misermom

AS ALWAYS, PLEASE OBSERVE NO UPLOAD SUNDAY for our hard working MODS!! Give a girl a break!

Let's get scrappin' chickies! Don't forget VSN is this weekend!!!

Huge Hugs and Lots of Smilies, Tracy

Thank you!! I am super flattered and honored! I was checking in my own gallery and most of my scrapbook pages are on pg. 3 there. I guess I need to get to work and create some more and post them. VSBN really helped me get a jump-start! I can't wait to do that again!! I also can't wait to see what you all come up with using the idea and the awesome one from Buckeye Stamper!!

Do we use the sketches found in the link in the first post in this thread? It is a link to the challenge #38. I just wanted to make sure before I went ahead and worked on it.

Sorry for the stupid question.

No Leah, that link takes you to that challenge, but it is just to show you the RULES for the challenges.

You want to use the links to Misermom's and Buckeye Stamper's pages, for your sketches. And feel free to do both, if you have the time!!

Great to have you here Leah!! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

I don't want to sound critical but....

I really miss the sketches...I don't like trying to debone someone else's scrapbook pages...it's like shopping for a house...very hard to see your own furniture in the house when someone else's overwhelming style gets in the way, KWIM?

So, as a service to myself and to others, I've created sketches to follow from the two layouts above. Enjoy!

Hmmm....I'm sorry to hear that Jan. Personally I don't have the capabilities of 'creating' my own sketches on my computer and I draw a lot of my inspiration from the fantastic work here on SCS. For me, I find it easier to work from a finished layout as opposed to a sketch, but that's just me. Also I was asked to give Tracy a hand with the sketch challenges while Cindy is away from SCS, so I apologize if my input isn't the same as you all were getting before.

But thanks for stepping up and making the sketches for others who feel the same as you do! That's great and we appreciate it!

Thanks Jan! I was going to do some this time but just didn't have or take the time...I am SO picky about the way they look and it takes me longer than the average gal...So, as I have always said and BEGGED for in the past...Suggestions, comments, questions...they are always welcome...I have tried to ask for what everyone would like to see but I rarely get any responses...So, we have just been doing and adding a few new things...Thanks for letting us know. Next week we can bring back the "real sketches" and maybe if I need a little help...could I call upon ya Jan? Thanks!

I truly appreciate the thought and the help! Hugs to you...

Well, I figured if I was going to do it for myself, there probably would be others who would also like the bare bones style. ;) I've got Adobe InDesign, which can generate a PDF, so it only took me about 20 minutes to do both of these. If I can help in the future, let me know!

I can certainly see both sides. Everyone appreciates all the hard work and discipline it takes just to get things posted for everyone else. I certainly get so much inspiration from all of the SB posters. However, I agree with JanTink that it is hard to see your pictures in a finished layout sometimes. Especially when the pictures do not match your lifestyle or interest.

Now, as far as creating your own sketches, I would love to do that. I homeschool so there is a white board in my dining room (AKA the school room or torture chamber) which comes in handy sometimes. I would love the Adobe, which I happened to price the other day and found it quite out of my budget at this time.:( I guess I will have to stick to the white board.

Thanks everyone for all the great ideas.

Hello, I'm just poppin in. I'm too busy this week and next week to do the sketch challenges but was curious to see what the challenges were so I could catch up leter. I really like the idea of picking a scrapper of the month. I liked reading misermom's write up. I think that is a great idea, if not for learning new things about scrapbooking, at least it would be great for community building. Since we have recently gotten away from the 12x12 and 81/2 x 11 sketches (which may again continue, I don't know) maybe we could have a scrapper of the week that we could use the sketch from their layout and another drawn sketch. Just a suggestion.

Thank you ladies for this wonderful idea. I just love that you are showcasing some pages of some of the incredible scrapbookers on here! I think they deserve all the recognition they can get and what a great way to do that! I do thank Janine for providing the matching sketches - I really do like working from a sketch and love that she did it and then posted it for everyone!

one thing I've noticed in looking at both of these is they use mostly landscape photos, which is what people tend to take.

I use Microsoft Publisher to make layout sketches and card sketches and the use a .pdf printer program to save it in .pdf format. I don't remember the name of the program, but it's free. You can do a search for .pdf printer driver and find several, I'm sure. And if you know how to do the sketches in Word or some other program, you can still save it as a .pdf using the the .pdf printer driver program.

I noticed that, too. And since most of the photos of our recent trip (but not the lighthouse photos) were taken in landscape, I'm happy with that. Often, though I will take many photos in Portrait mode and then have to rotate layouts and such - but that works, too.

Here's the link to my attempt. I feel like the pages need a little something extra, but not sure what? Any suggestions?

Thanks for the sketch Jan - helps alot. And since we are all friends here I feel the need for a little whine - can we get some 8.5x11 sketches again? There is no way I can get these 12x12 sketches/inspiration pages with lots of photos on them to work with 8.5x11. I tried last week and had no luck, and this week's looks tough to do too. Okay, whine over

I don't do 8 1/2 X 11, so I will forget, but if you will remind us, maybe someone can modify the 12 X 12 and post it for you.

Default MY DIVA BIO!

Hello Everyone!

I am so honored to be chosen as one of the first divas!

You can't imagine my surprise! SCS always brings a smile to my face.

Thanks for all of the love and support.

So here it is....

MY BIO>>>

Sorry it took a few days..we had a busy, busy weekend!

About me-
I have been scrapbooking for a long time now. Even before the craze started I was doing my own style books with good ol rubber cement. I am a fanatic picture taker, which leads to great scrapbook pages. My DD is not quite two and I have at least 5000 digital prints of her. DH likes to take pictures too and is very artistic, so we get a lot of great shots. My scrapbooking led me to SU and I eventually became a demo. It is hard to balance cards and scrapbooking so the challenges help me to keep my focus and get pages done. I really love scrapbooking and see it as an essential part of historic preservation of family memories. I cant imagine how many books Ill have when it is all said and done.

My Style-

Clean lines, you wont see many things at angles on my pages. Lots of color, lots of pictures and

1. I always start with pictures from the same event, I rarely use pictures from entirely different times or locations. Using pictures from the same times gives you similar background images and colors. I know that the focus of a picture is the subject, but your eye will catch that color in the background and it does make a difference.

2. Next I pick paper color. I typically use SU paper. I am a demo and after using it so much my brain thinks in those colors. I am extra picky with my color matching and I have to have the colors in my photos match my paper almost exactly. I would rather change my color scheme or go with white or black than to use a color that doesnt match exactly. I pick my inks now too. If I am using patterned paper, I try to pick a few solid colors that will coordinate. Sometimes a picture will have a certain color that is overwhelming, you may want to choose this color to be an accent. Be careful not to pick everything in the same color or you might get a wash. It is hard to do it right when using predominately one color.

3. I often mat in white and then a color to make things pop. I like a lot of color and use a color as my base page. When your page is full of color a little white around your pictures goes a long way.

4. Next I lay my pictures out. I try to get as many pictures on the page as possible with in reason. You still have to see your stamping, paper and embellishments. I was able to learn a lot about layouts as a yearbook editor. A few tips when laying out your pictures are to never have a subject looking off the page. If you can arrange pictures so that everyone is looking in that will make your layout more appealing. If there are two people in the picture, they can look at each other. Also dont trap white space. Put all of your pictures towards the spine of your book. They are heavy, space is light, put the space on the outer edges of the layout. If you have to have a space trapped by pictures, embellish it, embellish it, embellish it so that it appears as heavy as a picture. You are also not supposed to trap words, however I dont follow this rule for captions or titles, only for journaling blocks. Speaking of journaling blocks, I keep them in mind while laying out my pictures. I typically allow a journaling space equal to that of a size of a picture, or along one side, top or bottom of a page. Tags are great for adding journaling to a page where the pictures tell the story, but you have to add little tid bits here and there. Dates, names and locations are a must at the very minimum.

5. I like clean lines. I am all about what is pleasing to the eye. Maybe it is the engineer in me but I usually have to have things straight and in line.

6. Next I plan to stamp/embellish. For this I identify a theme that I wish to be shown through my embellishments. I take this theme while picking stamps. I also look at what space I have left! And choose accordingly. Rarely do I plan a page around the stamped images, they are just the icing on the cake. I repeat the main colors of my layout (and my pictures). I use the accent colors in the embellishments/stamped images too.

7. The rule of threes. When stamping/embellishing, do so using the rule of threes. It is more pleasant to your eye to have 3 similar items (or colors) located on the page. You are typically supposed to do this in the shape of a triangle. Note on the sketch for this challenge, the stamping/embellishing is on the far left, top middle and bottom right, if you drew lines between these items youd get a triangle. This rule also applies to color. Dont just put one red square on your page, if you really want the red there, add two more squares to balance it out.

8. Title, unless I have an awesome title idea upfront, I look at what I have left. They are often small for me. I take the title spot available, determine my title and then pick the stamp set that will fit it in that space.

9. Finally look over the general composition of your page. Do you have balance? Did you follow the rule of threes? Are your subjects looking off into space? Do you need a tidbit or flash any where? Finally do you have an empty line in need of a strip of ribbon?

10. Adhere it before you forget!

Thats it. Scrapbook layout 101 SCS DIVA Buckeye Stamper Style!

Have fun and remember getting your memories scrapped is the first priority the rest is just embellishments!

So, as a service to myself and to others, I've created sketches to follow from the two layouts above. Enjoy!
I am the same way Jan, but since both of theses layouts are actually pretty simple designs I wasn't overwhelmed by the details...but have been before. Thanks for doing the sketches! Now I'm much more likely to try Buckeye Stampers design...hopefully I'll get some more time to scrap before the week is gone. ;)

Cool! I think my program is from the stone ages...so that is part of the time issue. Thanks for the offer...don't be surprised if you hear from me soon. Hugs!

I am totally not picking on you Mary...But I have done this in the past...Picked a scrapper and then made a sketch from the layout. So as to have both the sketch and a finished page to gain inspiration from...just letting ya know...no comments/compliments were made at the time...Thanks for the input ladies! I appreciate your thoughts. I can't promise to make everyone happy but Kimmie and I can try to occomodate as best as we can...

Again...totally not picking just telling you guys my point of view. When I was asked to do the sketch challenge while Amy was away...I was to do the 8 1/2 x 11 sketch...After a few weeks, I saw very little interest in that sketch although I worked hard to make an original sketch. The 12 X 12 was the most popular choice. Since I noticed the smaller sketch was being converted to the 12 X 12 size, I really saw no point in doing both. SOrry I suppose I should have consulted the group. I did however, attempt to get opinions, suggestions, or other ideas of what the preferences our scrappers had. I got very little feed back. Now for some reason this week there seems to be a ton of feed back. I am not complaining just feeling a bit overwhelmed but still I am trying to take it all into consideration. I thank you all for your kind suggestions and ideas. Honestly, as far as providing a sketch with both sizes it is just a sheet of paper that can be converted to either size...so really the intended original size shouldn't make a huge difference. Simply adjust and if this does not work well for someone please let me know. I am always here to help.

I think you're starting to get more feedback because the gals here (myself included) have relaxed and feel so comfortable with our online sisters - which I think is a very good thing. We are taking ownership of our 'cyber-home' and want to make it more comfortable for everyone. If there's anything I can do to help you do that with the sketch challenges, let me know.

Tracy, I don't think you should worry too much about us - we are a bunch of chatter boxes, and can chatter about anything. We flit in and out of subjects as well! We do appreciate the work that you and the other divas are doing to continue providing the sketches and challenges - love them, keep them coming!
I did do the first sketch, finished it tonight, but will post in the morning, although it is a conglomeration of photos, it is what I needed and this sketch worked great. I do not, however, seem to be able to stamp other than background stamping. hmmm. Love my pages though and DD does as well, so right there, that's what counts - eh?

Yes, Mama T that is a good thing! Thanks for the offer...I am a bit worried about Lisa at the moment...She always posts on time...I am the one who is always late! ...Hopefully, she will call or pm me soon.
Thanks for responding MT!

For sure! Thanks Mary! I am a bit flighty myself at times and I chatter WAY too much some days! *wink*
