Good morning! So I still have my guillitine paper cutter from Stampin Up but it's just about seen its last days. I also have the new stampin trimmer from SU. Not real impressed with that one. I would really like to find another guillitine paper cutter like the old SU one. Anyone have a good recommendation of a similar one? I love cutting the thicker cardstock on the old cutter and blades seem to wear out so fast on the new SU one. Thanks so much in advance.
I have the Tonic 12x6 inch base guillotine paper cutter. It is self sharpening and very long lasting. I know they sell these on Amazon, but you should shop around for the best price.
I have the Tonic large base guillotine trimmer which I purchased in 2005 or 2006...love it, wouldn't trade it, especially because there are no blades to replace (it is still as sharp as the day I bought it!) Highly recommend it!! But I do have the Fiskars wire trimmer and I use that for more precise cutting when doing detail cuts.

Love my SU guillotine cutter! It is made by Tonic so hopefully you can find a new one. The SU one is great, isn't it?! I also have an ancient, huge guillotine cutter that I use for large papers as well as a Fiskars for detail cuts, but none are as portable as the SU one with the storage for the handle. Let us know if you find one!
I just looked on Amazon and that Tonic one looks just like my SU one. It costs around $41.00. I saw a Swingline one at WalMart but kind of leary. Think I paid about the same as the Tonic one but that was years ago. It appears you all are leaning towards the Tonic. I just had a really bad experience with Amazon on a laptop battery in the past and didn't really want to go through them. Thanks for the input everyone!
I have the 12x6 Tonic and love it..........also have two of the smaller ones. Got mine online at JoAnn with coupons.......that's been several years back though so I'm not sure if they still have them.

I have the Tonic guillotine cutter with the large 12x12 base. I love it. A few days ago I ordered a smaller guillotine cutter, also by Tonic but it is the one with Tim Holtz's name on it.
I've been wanting to replace my old Fiskars trimmer with the blade that you slide back and forth in the plastic "ruler". It's nice to have something smaller for a quick trim but it was hard to get consistent straight cuts.
Since I've been so happy with my large Tonic cutter I feel confident the smaller 8.5" one I just ordered will be good as well.
I've used a large Tonic at an LSS and it was great. I was on the verge of buying one, but since I'm attached to my fingers (and vice versa), and knowing my inclination toward distractibility, I sadly passed. I got a Carl rotary instead, which cuts through everything like buttah, as well as many pieces of CS at once, and has a lifetime warranty.
My only issue with guillotines and rotaries is that if you need to cut and measure really narrow strips of paper, you can't, so the Fiskars with wire guide handles that.
I also have an older Cutterpillar crop and it comes in handy for some things - like slightly narrower pieces that the Carl.

I am just wondering what happened to your guillotine cutter.
So in answer to Lynn's question I have had my guillotine cutter for about 11 years. I heard you did not have to sharpen it, but it seemed to start getting dull and the paper cuts were not very smooth. I took it to a place where they sharpen industrial blades and that seemed to help, but I just feel like it is time to replace. I love using it to cut the heavy recollections cardstock for my card bases and the new SU trimmer blades seem to get dull so quick and at $6.00 for a pack of two I could probably pay for the Tonic in about 6 months. I looked at the back of my SU one and it does say Tonic on it. I will probably bite the bullet and try Amazon again. Cannot seem to find it anywhere else. Thank you to all of you who have commented. ttemby, you do know that the SU guillotine cutter (made by Tonic), is self sharpening? I imagine you do, but just in case you don't, you just press down on the finger guards as you normally would, and pull the handle up and down a few times (with no paper) to sharpen the blade.
You might try cleaning your blade with alcohol; it evaporates quickly so it won't harm the blade and will remove the paper dust.

As you run the blade up and down, push the handle slightly toward the cutter bed so the 2 metal parts are rubbing against each other.
I have had mine for about 10 yrs and still get nice clean cut edges. Actually have a 'back up' one in a closet in case something happens to the one I am using. Found it on Amazon for about $45-$50, I think.
