Hello all. I'm looking for alternatives to the effect that heat embossing gives. Would glossy accents be a good alternative? Are there any other alternatives you can think of?
there is/was a company that made stickers that were to be colored, and were raised. They came in black, gold, silver and maybe white..I can't remember the name, but will search and see if I can find it.

Glossy Accents is what I have used on small items but I've wished for a way to make balloons glossy and Glossy Accents is too hard to control when the edge must be precise and you don't want stripes from using a paint brush. Glossy Accents looks foggy when you first apply it but quickly turns shiny.
Lots of alternatives to get a glossy finish, but it depends on what you're wanting it for. Balloons can be made of foil. Gilding flakes and fluids can look embossed, as can the metallic pastes used with stencils. If you die-cut a sentiment, you can use Glossy Accents and a brush to make it look heat-embossed. Have brush cleaner handy! And be careful the GA doesn't act like a glue and stick to whatever you use as a mat while you're painting on the Glossy Accents.

I'll tell ya, I received a Christmas card this year that I though was heat embossed and I told its creator that she did a beautiful job on it. After I looked more carefully, it turned out to be stickers so that is definitely a great option for you.
Years ago in the UK, 'peel offs' were all the rage, they came in gold, silver, black and white and sometimes in pastels or red /green. They could be coloured with markers. I still have a large stash which sees daylight about once every two years.

I have a set of the Silver ones with Christmas trees...I will look when I go down stairs....they are very delicate and distort kind of easy...I had to use my tweezers to place, but they are nuclear sticky and do not come up, I even used a little water color and they did not unstick themselves
Why don't you want to use traditional heat embossing? Is it the lack of a heat gun?
I helped my granddaughter emboss 150 wedding invitations last year. We stamped and applied gold embossing powder to 4 invitations at a time, layed them on a clean cookie sheet and placed in the oven for about 1 minute at 350 degrees. If the cookie sheet is not perfectly clean, line with aluminum foil.
Two of us worked assembly line and had them all done in a couple of hours.
I have used the oven to heat emboss several times when I needed a lot of the same card (Christmas, etc.)
Glossy accents is a good alternative for some thing but may be hard to control for detail work. That is where pigment ink, stamping and heat embossing are a better option. Probably cheaper in the long run too.
FYI, I've used finger nail polish on a card before because I didn't want to emboss such a small area and didn't have any GA. ...shhh, don't tell anyone though...
I have arthritic hands and my handwriting or printing is not very professional looking. I found a company named Elizabeth Craft Designs, Evergreen CO. The items are made in the Netherlands and just received my order this week. Many of the words like Thank you, Merry Christmas,etc. are beautifully done in blacks, golds, silvers and some come is several other colors and so easy to apply. The glue on them seems strong enough so they words do not fall off. But if in doubt you can use Glossy Accents over them. Also I noticed that some of the packages I recieved had the name Starform and they are made in Holland. So I am going to go on-line to see what this Company offers. When I purchased the words, they had pages of designs animals, flowers, scenes, etc. I couldn't resist the good prices, so I purchased all kinds of designs.
I am always looking for a better way to enhance my greeting cards and want them to look professional. This morning I cut out a banner and put the silver sticker "Thank you" on it and colored over the silver words and white paper with memento red ink. It looks fantastic. So my idea now is to cut many banners, use all the different words I purchased and then color with ink to match the cards. Since many of my cards are all purpose ones folks can choose the banner that fits their event. I do hope this helps you in your quest.
I just went on line with the Starform Company. They are a Dutch company that has been in business for years. I was amazed at all the selections of stickers they have plus books on how to use them, pens to change the sticker colors. Most impressive is they provide examples and instructions on how to make the card displayed and the stickers required to make the card. There are velvet stickers, 3D stickers, Hologram stickers, transparent stickers etc,. This would be the go to company for any kind of sticker you want and gives ideas of how to use them.
Scenes, words, boarders, mosaic, etc.

If I have a small area that I want to hi-light with an embossed look I will use the Sakura Glaze pens. I also use GA and to make it a bit easier when using it with a brush I add a drop or 2 of water to thin it down a fraction - I haven't had any adverse effects from doing this.
Alternatives to heat embossing?
