Chalk ink staining?

HI,
I'm trying to make some gifts using wood tags. I've "painted" the tags with clear/white chalk paint. When I tested writing on the tags with a blue chalk ink marker, it did wipe off, but it stained the entire tag blue.

If you've used the clear chalk paint before, is this typical? If it is, it kind of ruins my gift idea as each tag end up stained by the color of the pen.

If you have any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Thanks.

I would think the chalk paint would prepare the surface to be written on with dry chalk, but not chalk ink... I don't have chalk markers but I know that some of my chalk ink pads badly stain clear stamps and I would imagine the ink formula is similar. Do you have regular chalks or pastels that you could use to write with instead?
