It's Thanksgiving day here in Canada. It's always great to have a long holiday weekend, but when you add family and friends, and yummy food, it really rocks! This year, we also have the bonus of fantastic weather. Other than yesterday, when it was drizzly all day, we have had sunshine and unusually warm weather for most of September and October. My sister-in-law actually went swimming in Lake Huron on Saturday.

Default S2S13OO 'Pastor Appreciation'

Time for this week's challenge. October is pastor/clergy appreciation month. Lets make a card for our pastors and actually send or give it to them. If you don't have a pastor, choose someone who has been of inspiration and/or emotional help to you. So this is not a thank you card for someone who has done something physical for you (for example mowing your lawn, making a meal) but for someone who has stood by you in a challenging situation.
The key letters are S2S13OO. Those are O's not zeros.

Hello ladies. I've got my hands full with HYCCT makes and uploads. I'll be saving these Oct challenges to upload at the end of the month.

In the couple of weeks I've been applying S2S values to my crafting it's been interesting for me to note a couple of things. Since I have assigned a 20 cent value to everything I use to make a card I now consider if I can apply value adding to give me a higher end price. Also it's eye opening how much I spend on incidentals to keep my craft room operational. This past fortnight I've had to buy new photo backdrops, a new mouse, SCS subscription, storage items, etc. All that stuff quickly eats into my bottom line, lol.

The goal of this S2S forum is to make us more aware and to help us use up the 'stuff' we already have instead of just going out and buying the exact thing someone else used to make a beautiful card. Substitution works just fine and makes us more creative.

Hi Sharon! It's a nice morning here, although they do forecast rain later. Off to church soon and then to Toronto to attend a baby shower for my daughter. She's expecting my first granddaughter. I already have 5 grandsons!

Default S2S13PP challenge 'Apples'

Today is 'Apple Day' in the U.K. A card with an apple or more will be very fitting! I don't have a sample as yet, so use your imagination.

Default S2S13QQ challenge 'Special folds'

I'm having difficulty getting on the net today. Hopefully, this time I will be able to post. Last week, I posted a couple of Halloween cards for my grandsons, and some stampers mentioned that they had difficulty making special folds cards. The special folds cards I made were very simple. So my challenge this week, is to make a special fold card. Check out the resource section. Today, the TLC challenge does have a special fold card, but it is a little more complicated. My cards used a 12 X 5 1/2 inch paper. Scored at 2, 4, 8 and 10 inches, the two and 10 inch scores were mountain folds, the 4 and 8 inch folds were valley folds. Then add the elements.....it could even be just a sentiment panel glued to the top and overlapping the bottom half. Give it a try!

I've made one more card with a special fold. I don't remember ever making a side step card, so I thought I would try one.

Default S2S13RR 'Silhouette, old stamp'

I am posting a bit early, as I need to be at my DD's place at 6 a.m. to take care of my grandson, while his mother goes in to give birth to his little sister by C-section. My first granddaughter!
I'm making it an easy one this week. It's time to use a stamp we haven't used in the past year (or alternatively, a stamp we have never used) Oh yes, so it's not too easy, lets make it a silhouette stamp!

Hello stampers, I have just found this thread. Sounds like something I want to get into. I love using what I have, and being inspired to dig a little, and since I feel so guilty buying new this is the answer. I can give value to what I use up and apply it towards the new - love it!
And, Ina, congrats on the brand new granddaughter! Hope to see her in some scrapbook layouts.

Hi Joyce Ann, this thread does make you think about what you are spending and it has inspired me to try to use scraps, of which I have many, and my stash, having dies now I find I am very pleased with myself when I use leftovers from one card to make parts for another card.

Joyce Ann, welcome! You have the right attitude for this forum! And it sounds like you can be an inspiration to us too! I must admit that I have been spending quite a bit lately.....but I just had to have that Memory Box baby carriage die and I really wanted to learn and practice the Tim Holtz distress techniques.
I started out my paper crafting with scrapbooking, but I have taken the road of least resistance the past few years. Cards are so much faster to finish, and the challenges are fun.
But I promise I will do some scrapbooking soon!

I'm sure you deserve a "baby carriage die" Ina!
I started scrapbooking very many years ago - probably 20! - was introduced to rubber stamps and card making in '05 I think it was. Couldn't be happier about that.
So, I'm making my "list" of credits and I have a question for you all. If I assign a credit to a card, for example, how many credits equal a dollar? I'm thinking 5 credits = $1.00

Hello ladies. I've been keeping myself busy with Octobers challenges and I finally got around to updating my totals. I bought a much needed new paper trimmer using money raised from selling off unused crafting tools and $S2S. However November will be a test with Black Friday sales. Getting Christmas crafts done should go along way to reaching my spend allowance goals.

Congrats for the new grandbaby, Ina.

Joyce Ann, everyone makes their own amounts. I don't go by the point system myself. I pay myself $1.00 for a card made, 50 cents if I send or give it. I also give myself a credit for doing a challenge and also for exercising. $1.00 for a 30 minute walk, and additional 3 cents per minute over, and $2.00 for a 1 hour workout at Curves. Some people also give themselves credit for jobs that need a lot of motivation, like cleaning and organizing their craft room. So however you want to do it, it's up to you. Just keep a record, but no one is going to check up on you. It's the honour system. This forum is about making us more aware of mindless spending and helping us to use up our stuff.

Default S2S13SS 'Photo inspiration'

Tomorrow is a busy day for me, what with Remembrance Day services and a drive to Toronto to visit my DD and Grandson. So I'm posting a bit early. Our church bulletin had a lovely picture on the front today. I have photographed it for inspiration. It is Remembrance Day in Canada. World War I ended on November 11, 1918 at 11. a.m. On the picture the first few lines of a famous poem are written. 'In Flanders Fields the poppies grow, Between the crosses, row on row. The poem was written by Col. John McRae who came from Guelph, Ontario, which is about 12 miles from my home.

We celebrate Veterans Day tomorrow here. We had a parade on Saturday, and no mail tomorrow. It is interesting that our Veterans Day is same day as your Remembrance day, isn't it? Right away, I am inspired by the crosses in your photo.

In Australia we acknowledge remembrance day with a two minute silence at 11am and depending on where you may find yourself at that time you may get to hear the sound of the horn being played. Our major day to honour our service men and women is ANZAC Day in April.

All the best for my northern sisters as they honour their services.

We were watching the parade on tV for Remembrance Day held in London, always makes me sad but very proud to see our troops on parade. It was also my mums birthday.

Ina our vets give paper poppies on Memorial day in May. The sentiment on your photo made me wonder if that is where that tradition started.

Apparently in the war in Flanders(France) the shells and bombs caused the ground to be disturbed and that's what triggered poppies to grow, thats why in England poppies are sold to raise money for injured soldiers every year for Remembrance Day.
My son bought me a Buckley broach that's a lovely poppy, I only get to wear it for a short time every year but it's really pretty.

Default S2S13TT ... Using a photo

No, this is not a repeat of last week's challenge. This week let's see if we can incorporate a photo in a card. I make a lot of photo cards, because I love photography. But I don't want just a photo card. I want a card that uses a photo but also has other elements. I have not made a sample yet, but will try to do so today.
I am late posting this challenge, as I was without internet all day yesterday, due to the high winds in our area. I hope everyone else survived the disastrous weather of this weekend.

I'm hoping I can get back to making some cards tomorrow, I've been revamping my craft room for over a week, after three trips to ikea and numerous hours putting everything together the charity shop have just been to collect my old computer desk, this is their third collection so I can get to all my drawers, I'm so excited to have a play in there.

Default S2S13UU 'St. Andrews Day'

Oops, I totally forgot about the challenge for this week. This coming Saturday, November 30 will be St. Andrews Day, which is widely celebrated by people of Scottish descent. Anything Scottish will do for this challenge.......a map of Scotland, tartans and plaids, and whatever you can think of.

Ok, I'm ready to go! I have set up a credit value - can be changed if need be, but at least it is a start for me. And, I'm starting this month rather than waiting until the beginning of the year. If interested, I have it spelled out on a blog post. I would love to know what you think of it - any criticism would be most appreciated.

Joyce Ann, that looks good to me, although you are not being as generous with yourself as I am. I don't go by the points system....I just give myself $1.00 for a card made, and an extra 50 cents if it is sent or given. I also credit myself $1.00 if I did a challenge.

Default S2S13VV challenge 'Focus on the Sentiment'

Sorry for the late posting of this week's challenge. This week is all about the sentiment! Make it the focal point of your card! Simple enough!

Joyce Ann, I pay myself more too. 50 cents a card, 1.00 per 1 page LO. Then I pay myself more if I did it for challenges. So much per challenge. (1.00) 25 cents if I use it. I don't think 60 cents is enough. When you figure if you go to the store they are 1.99 to 5.00 or more.

Humm, I see your point ladies. Will have to reconsider. At the rate of $.60 for an average card I'll never compensate the expense of new.
And I went to Sam Flax today. DD wanted some colored pencils so I had to pick out some watercolors I really needed - haha. I took a house photo and uploaded it to the photo challenge thread. I really need to go watercolor something.

Here's my card for this week's challenge, to make the sentiment the main focus.

I have updated my totals, just in time for my trip to Austin, where there are two Hobby Lobby stores within a 15 minute drive from my son's house. I notice they have 50% off on a bunch of items in the scrapbooking department this week!
