This stuff is so yummy, it is addictive.....I use vegetarian chorizo or no meat and it's still just as good. And I usually put a pile of rice in bottom of bowl before putting in soup.

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon finely chopped garlic
1/2 cup diced onions
1/2 diced turnips
1/2 cup diced carrots
1 bunch kale, stemmed and roughly chopped
6 ounces chopped chourico (spicy Portuguese sausage), or chorizo
3 bay leaves
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves
2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme leaves
6 cups beef stock
1 cup kidney beans
6 ounces diced tomatoes
10 ounces diced potatoes

Directions

In a large stock pot, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, onions, turnips and carrots and cook for 5 minutes. Add the kale, chourico, bay leaves, parsley and thyme and mix well. Add the beef stock, beans and tomatoes. Bring the soup to a boil, and then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, bring salted water to a boil and add the diced potatoes. Cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Drain the potatoes and add them to the soup.

Remove the bay leaves and serve hot.

This soup sounds right up my husband's alley. He's more into spicy than me but I think I'll give it a try sometime for him (and yes, I will try it). I think he'd appreciate it.

Okay, stew is cooking, should be ready in time for me to eat and join the party around 8 pm EST - WOO HOO!

I love stew, not only is it yummy, but when I make it I don't need to make much more than additional batches of extra broad egg noodles for the next few days - YEAH! I feel a little guilty though, I really want to be a lacto-ovo vegetarian again, but I can't seem to give up my stew every now and then... everything else I can live without...

I'm ready for the party tonight. DH is marinated chicken for 2 days, he'll cook that up before he leaves for work.
I'm putting a quilt together tonight to start quilting it too.

Yummy! That sounds good Lee especially on cold days.

My DH says to get a blow torch at Home Depot, that should work fine.

I knit a little and crochet pretty well .. I've always wanted to learn to quilt but have resisted because I know how I'll be with fabric. Much like I am with paper. We have one more kid to put through college and if I start quilting, it would be iffy for her!

Well, DH has announced he's going in to work early tomorrow to get some of his own work done before he has to train in a new temporary staff member...so that should give me enough time to catch up on all the chatter and fun IF it's not too many pages . Looking at my world clock I will be sound asleep (I hope!!) before the fun starts today.
Meantime I've got all my December BRAK cards addressed. If only my Christmas cards were that organised!!
I like the sound of Sheri's soup - apart from the kale it reminds me very much of one my mother used to make. But DH, I can tell without even trying, would not like chorizo. And he doesn't really like the cabbage in minestrone, so it's a safe bet he probably wouldn't like the kale either :-(. It sounds like a perfect winter warmer.

You're so funny. This is for my good friend Mike who kept telling me I could make 50 cards for this challenge. It's mainly Army fabric which he served & I thought this would be perfect for him back home in San Diego.
Thank you.

Tried knitting when I was a pre-teen. Didn't care for it.

Crocheted a baby blanket when I was pregnant, instead of a rectangle, it came out looking more like a J.

I had better luck with quilting. I started with Eleanor Burns' Quilt in a Day pattern book. The log cabin pattern is the easiest. I made a wall hanging and quilt for my son's crib. You sew strips, cut and sew again. A LOT easier than it looks!

Quilt: Quilt in a Day / Books / Log Cabin-Make a Quilt in a Day

Wall hanging: Quilt in a Day / Books / Log Cabin Christmas Tree Wallhanging

One of these days, I want to do a spring-color double pinwheel quilt for my bed.

Melissa, that's what my Log Cabin is....the blocks only took me 8hrs including cutting the strips. The longest process will be quilting it.

Lovely quilts Melissa.

Ah, well, I figure I might as well post the recipe anyway.

Panera Bread's Broccoli Cheese Soup

1 tbsp melted butter
1/2 medium onion, chopped
Saute onion in butter, set aside

1/4 cup melted butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups half and half
2 cups chicken stock
Make a roux: Cook melted butter and flour over medium heat, whisking constantly, for 3-5 minutes. Add the half and half slowly while continuing to whisk, then add the chicken stock, again while continuing to whisk.

1/2 lb fresh broccoli
1 cup chopped carrots
Add the broccoli and carrots and the cooked onions. Cook over low heat until the veggies are tender...about 20-25 minutes. By this time the soup should have thickened up.

Puree the mixture in the blender until mostly smooth. Do this in small batches! Return to the pot.

Add:
salt and pepper to taste
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp dijon mustard
8 ounces grated sharp cheddar
Stir well and heat through. DO NOT BOIL!

Now, for what I do different from this recipe. I don't puree all the soup just some of it, or I cook the broccoli florets (that are chopped fine) separately, and I puree with the carrots and add the broccoli later. Occasionally I don't puree at all and just chop the veggies really fine before I add them in.

The carrots add some color and thickness to the soup so don't leave them out.

Cool. I bought material 15+ years ago with the intention of making my first quilt using the log cabin pattern. The fabric is buried in some drawer....

You should get the fabric out & try it Pati.

Checking in, in between some cleanup & laundry. It took way too long to catch up on the chatter last night, you gals had fun! So I'm trying to peek in more often today. Hubby's coming home tomorrow night after being out of town for a few weeks. I got spoiled with just our dog & I, very little cooking, more crafting & making a big mess. I think I have the place back to the before he left look, maybe a little better ;)

There's a meeting at my place tomorrow night, before the airport run, so now I'm debating whether it's worth plowing the 2-3 inches of snow now or just leave it. I won't have time between work and the meeting to do it tomorrow... It may snow more during the night and keep piling up. The pooch hates plowing and is trying to motivate me to take her on a romp thru the snowy woods, which is actually sounding more fun than plowing I think we'll romp around the drive/parking area first to decide for sure. I prefer plowing in the daylight, since I'm not great at it (hubby is) so I better decide quick before the light fades.

Back later!

Oye, I'm not making much progress either! I'm doing it by challenge to help me keep track of where I left off. Even then, I'd love to view & comment on each card but that would probably take me till next spring at my rate, which isn't till May in Alaska, just so you know! I can't sit for long but time flies, 2 hrs have flown by somehow, light is fading, dog is barking at me, machine's beeping, stuff to do!

Hi
are we getting close to the time? Oh no still 3 hours grrr

anywho
I quilt stopped when the kids were touching my stuff but think I might pull my UFOs out soon. I have a quilt that just needs quilting finished and binding and would love to sell it for a donation to the Avon Walk. I'm thinking I could get at least $100 for it if not more, can't recall how large it is right now.

I also emailed the broccoli soup recipe to myself.

Oh Thanks!!!

Sitting down for the first time all day. I've made tomatillo sauce for tonight's dinner, cupcakes (from scratch, this was more for entertaining the kids than anything else), frosting and potato leek soup for later in the week. Doesn't seem like much. for having spent almost all day in the kitchen. I wish we had some wine. We are out and the liquor stores are closed on Sunday. Maybe I'll talk DH in to making me a margarita. Will try to be back later for some more fun.

Thanks for the soup recipes!

I should, tho I'm almost afraid to look at what fabric I had picked out way back then...

I should do alot of things. I'd like to finish a few counted cross-stitch projects I had started, mmm, not quite that long ago, too. My half time job has grown into a 2/3rds to 4/5ths job, my pooch thinks a big part of my off time should be spent romping with her, and my hubby, when home, would like a home cooked meal every night. I love all of this but it doesn't leave me much desire or energy or creative brain cells to do more than veg in front of the tv or read a book some nights. Maybe I should quit my paying job to have more time.... but I need it to pay for my expensive hobbies that I don't make time for.

I'm in awe of all of you with kids, you manage your time (and energy) so well to squeeze in so much fun, creatively productive time!

Ok, it's later and dog is still arfing at me to either let her back in or to come out and join her.
