MDS "Save photo template" function?

I have created a photo template in MDS, and was under the impression that I could save it in my templates folder to be used on other projects. When I try to save to the templates folder, I keep getting an error message. I also get an error message if I try to save to another folder I have created. Has anyone been able to successfully use this function? Could you please explain to me how to do it?
