Default TLC226 Faux Denim {6/22/09}

There's nothing I'm more comfortable in than an old pair of jeans....well, maybe my pajamas, but next to those, I love the relaxed fit and feel of denim on my skin. Today I'm going to show you how to bring the look of denim into your projects. This type of background looks great for many occasions, but works especially well with masculine card, picnic themes in scrapbooks, western themes and anytime you want to show off that awesome denim feel. Just think what cute flowers and other embellishments you could make with this paper.

For todays technique you will need the following:

Piece of medium blue cardstock. (I used Brocade Blue)
Medium blue dye ink pad
Darker blue dye ink pad
White ink pad (I used Colorbox Cats Eye Ink pad)
Optional: a piece of Cut 'n Dry Stamp pad - I used this as opposed to just using my entire stamp pad because my pads are old and are slightly indented, which didn't give me the same effect I wanted, but rather some harsh lines.

This technique is very similar to the faux woodgrain effect, but you're using blue, rather than browns. So let's get started.

Take your blue cardstock and place it on something to protect your work surface (piece of scratch paper or a non-stick craft mat)

If you are using the Cut 'n Dry pads, cut a little piece - I used 2 X 3" and ink up the pad with the medium blue ink. If you are using your medium blue dye ink pad, run the pad directly onto the paper, making long sweeping strokes the entire length of your cardstock, going in one direction. You don't want to completely cover the cardstock, but rather drag your pad across the cardstock.

Repeat the same thing with your darker blue dye ink pad - (using the same Cut 'n Dry piece), going in the same direction as you did with the medium blue ink pad. Let this dry a bit.

Using your white ink pad, repeat the process. Again in the same direction as the other blue inks. Since you are using white, and most likely it will be a pigment ink, this will require some drying time before moving on. Heat setting is an option if you're inpatient like me.

Now - turn your cardstock 90 degrees and repeat the process all over again but this time you are swiping across your lateral lines

When you have completed this process, you should have a piece of cardstock that very closely resembles denim.

You can now complete your card as desired.

My sample can be seen by clicking HERE.

To view all the projects using this technique, CLICK HERE.

And as always, please use the keyword TLC226 NO SPACES when you upload your projects.

Have you recently seen something interesting that you think would make a good TLC project? I'd love to hear about it - just shoot me a PM along with a link so that I can see what you're recommending. Believe me - finding new things isn't easy, so any help you can provide is truly appreciated.

HINT FOR NEXT WEEK: You won't need a lighter, matches or a candle for this card to look hot!

Well, I tried it and the white pigment is drying so I can make a card --- sure did make a mess of my white craft pad! I am thinking of pockets and faux stitching and adorable. Thanks for the great technique!

Oh my word, Lynn .... I'm COVERED in dark blue reinker!!! What fun. The ink I used is way too dark to look like denim, but I like the way it turned out anyway! Thanks for another super challenge!

Not Quite Faux Denim
I tried, but somehow it doesn't look as I think it should. And I couldn't get into the forum for about half an hour just when I was in the middle of it.
Like everyone else I have blue fingertips -except for the pink one where I manged to slice off a layer of skin - but not enough to bleed, luckily.

Lynn, after last week I was almost afraid to look at the challenge today. I know last week I said my thoughts were ... hmmm, interesting... once is enough. Todays technique is almost completely opposite. I know I will use this one again, and again, and again... I loved it. Thanks for all the hard work you do finding us these wonderful techniques to try.

Here is my Little Denim Bear card.
